The highest attendance that year was 24, the lowest was 7, the average attendance, 19. School was in session for three months. The students were charged $2, 50 tuition; the state allocated $50; and the local people subscribed $10, lumber, and labor toward the first school building. The first trustees were Ferguson Moore, Thomas Jefferson Renfro, and John G. Fee. The first teacher was William E. Lincoln, an Oberlin College (Ohio) student, who taught during his vacation - hence the three-month school term. Three years later, in 1858, when John A. R. Rogers came to Berea, he added a pay (sub- scription) school to the town school. A year later, in 1859, this subscription school was closed because of the teachers' views on slavery. The town school, however, continued uninterrupted with Miss Rawlings as the teacher. After the Civil War, Fee, Rogers, and others returned to Berea, but they no longer used the town school building. The exact date of our beginning as an independent district is not known, but it was probably about 1890, when the town of Berea was incorporated, An article printed in The Citizen on March 15, 1917, states that a two-year high school had been added to the city school. The two rooms set aside for the high school classes were heated with portable kerosene stoves, In 1929 Berea High School graduated its first four-year class, The ten members of that class were; Helen H. Cornelius Clinton C, Hensley Lillian Hutchins Walter McKeehan Gladys Oliver Ella Mae Powell Charles Frederick Rominger Adith M. Smith Wilbur Wynn Thurman Todd In 1968 the Berea City School enrollment was 582 elementary students and 211 high school students; forty-three were graduated from high school. We occupy 35 rooms for classrooms and need more. Our alumni association boasts over 850 members. The Senior Class of 1967-68 was the most unpredictable class to come along in the his- tory of Berea High School. They failed more tests, they went in the hole more often, skip- ped more classes, irritated more teachers, and ruined more reputations than any one class anywhere. Although the won and lost record wasn't the best, the caliber of teams they played and the number of injuries suffered would have taken its toll on any team. The majority of the team were really dedicated young men and, even after several tough losses, came back each week to give a 100% effort. These boys worked from January to the opening game to try to give Berea High School a football team they would long remember. Everyone will remember the tremendous leadership and play of the two senior co-captains, Glyn Green and Paul Reynolds, both of whom received college scholarships and numerous post- season awards. Nine other seniors will be very sorely missed. The hard work of all the under- classmen, who worked with tremendous enthusiasm, and from whom a lot must come next fall, is duly appreciated. The Pirates opened the season with a 34-0 pasting of Burgin behind the strong offensive leadership of Green, Shupe, Davis, and the defensive efforts of Reynolds, Evans, Baugh, and Coyle. Next came the Commodores from Tates Creek. The Pirates never looked better behind a crushing offense and an air-tight defense which sent them back to Lexington to the tune of 28-6. Then came two successive losses at the hands of Garrard Co. and Scott Co. and the injuries began to take their toll. We got back on the winning trail with a 41-0 win over Mercer Co. and a 13-18 tie with homecoming foe Simon-Kenton, These were followed by three successive losses to Georgetown, Frankfort, and Covington Catholic. The last game of the season with rival Madison High ended in a 7-6 victory for the Pirates and it was an extremely good win because the Pirates had five starters on the sideline with in- juries, Under-classmen such as Bryan Reynolds, Jim Dean, and Jerry Lowery in their first start- ing assignment came through like veterans. It was Berea's first win over Madison High in football. Although we lost the services of one of our outstanding players in mid- season, we were able to bounce back and play very good basketball the remainder of the year, We lost three starters and two reserves by grad- uation and each one of these young men has made a big contribution to- ward the improvement of Berea High's basketball program. SENIORS Ronnie Devere, a senior, was the leading scorer with a 15.7 average per game for the year. Other outstanding performers were Otis Broaddus, Glen Miracle, Kenny Rowlette, John Walker, and Stewart Martin. Coach Floyd Hines in his first year worked hard to help the boys produce a good track team, Berea has some young boys so their future is bright. The girls topped off the season by winning the Blue Grass Conference. Since they have nine members still in grade school and no seniors on the team the girls should be better in the future. Beauty is really an opinion, and is judged in the eye of the beholder. The 1968 Pirate Staf and worshiping toget' that working together ld go hand-in-hand, 106 1968 JUNIOR- SENIOR PROM MRS. COOK eee OUR ADVISOR Each of us has many sides to his character. These pictures depict three sides of Mrs. Cook's character: understanding, cheerfulness, and wisdom. She is always here when we need her to guide and direct us. Her wisdom and cheer- fulness are a living example for us to follow. Her tactfulness and strictness keep us on our toes to learn and obey. Often we do things that are uncalled for, causing her to unleash her corrective anger, But the calm after the storm is most rewarding. Mrs. Cook, we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You will always occupy a very special place in our memories. 107 CLAS 108 IGHT 109 BACCALAUREATE Looking back through the years in elementary and high school, it seems almost im- possible to the seniors that they were destined to one night take their place in the auditorium in the same spot where the seniors before them had stood. Some people give credit to fate for all the successes and or misfortunes that befall them; but the seniors of 1968 know that it wasn't luck that finally brought them through, It took many hours of study and patience to finish the last lap of the course. The Berea City School, Knapp Hall, and the Foundation School will then be com- bined in one institution. This is a cooperative venture with major con- tributions being made by the Berea Independent School District, the City of Berea, and Berea College. The Berea Community School will be one of the most modern educa- tion facilities inthe country, offering many advantages for both the stu- dents and the teachers. For example, the open-space concept makes it possible to arrange the classroom size to fit the needs of any particular class because there are sliding partitions instead of permanent room walls. Because ofthis principle, the total amount of usable space is also much greater. This conceptis becoming more andmore popular through- out the country as new schools are built. The design of the Berea Community School will permit more indi- vidualized instruction for each student. There will be facilities for in- struction in geography, languages, mathematics, music, science, and social sciences in addition tomore specializedclasses. The school will be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The four-unit structure of circular shapes will stand ina 56-acre tract of land. Of the three circular wings joined by a central unit, one will be for the elementary school, one for the high school, and one for the gymnasium with facilities for community events. The central unit will contain the cafeteria and the Henrietta Child Library. The interior will be entirely climate-controlled. The wings can be opened jointly or separately for community and school events. The gymnasium will seat about 1000 for athletic events, and about 2000 for concerts and other programs when folding chairs can be added to the permanent seating. The circle set apart from the three wings is an open-air'‘play shelter that can be used in any kind of weather. Berea College contributed 40 acres ofthe building site for the Berea Community School. The college also, back in 1965, pledged $100,000 a year for three years toward the construction costs which total $2, 398, 000. The college, furthermore, agreed to pay the Berea Independent School District $35,000 a year for five years for the privilege of using the school for teacher training purposes. Future payments willbe negotiated after this first five-year period. 122 DAVIDSON BROTHERS AND COMPANY Quality Cleaning Done by Experienced, Competent Personnel Try NU-WAY CLEANERS Free Minor Repairs and Buttons Replaced Phone 986-4121 for Pickup and Delivery Service Wholesale Warehouse WAYMAN’S DEPARTMENT STORE Across From Berea High School Berea, Ky.
