Being A Senior... There is a special thrill about being a Senior. The prestige, Senior privileges (although few), and the fact that our class is second to none, contribute to the overall happiness of being a Senior. The Seniors seem to be separate from the rest of the high school. We have a room all our own, we leave first after assembly, slave on the yearbook, take tests continously, wear class rings, try on caps and gowns, have certain fringe benefits, and do many, many more things that the other classes never dream of doing. Happiness really is being a Senior. Seniors always leave first after Above. Laboring on the year- assembly, and either sit on the a book proved to reap success. front row or on the floor. Above. Senior John Fowler was a master of taking advantage of fringe benefits. Above and right. Constant pressures on the Seniors were released several ways. Above, the seniors are preparing to leave on the Senior Trip on the morning of May Ist. It's g-o-o-d! Class Night was termed a is brought to huge success. mind. . . « The Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet . . . The theme of the 1967 Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet was Seventh Heaven , At the banquet, the seniors found out why they could not get into heaven and discovered that there are not too many secrets at BHS. When we fin- ished the great meal, left Boone Tavern, and arrived at the gym, we viewed a beautifully decorated gymnasium. So beautiful, in fact, even the seniors themselves had to admit that it was the best Prom ever. Where the action was: the '66-'67 Junior- Senior Prom. Good food, good entertainment, and good company helped the banquet become a suc- cess? At the Prom, Jane Britton and Donald Blackburn crowned Beverly Johnson- and Abby Scruggs Prom King and Queen. Jerry Tull, Senior Class President, puts in 6 his two cents’ worth. . . . School Spirit . . . School spirit is the thing that keeps a school going even though it is months until the next vacation, and the teachers seem to be smothering everybody with homework. When the ball team wins its game, there's an air of happiness all over the school, and the homework is not so tough after all, But what if the team does not leave the court in victory? School spirit prevails because the fans fill the bleachers at the next home game and cheer all the more loudly. The faculty takes part in school spirit, too. Above left and right; the faculty-senior ball game. At left, Mr. Kemp Even though it at the Carnival. snowed and lots of the floats were ruined, the Home- coming Parade carried on as planned. (Right) Left and Right: The Cheer- leaders get most of the credit for keeping school spirit alive, and they sure eam it. . . . Graduation... . Commencement was held May 26th, 1967. In some ways graduation was an ending; in some, a beginning. It was an end to all the wonderful days at Berea High School. Saying goodbye to dear old BHS and walking from the building for the last time as High School students was just as hard as saying good-bye to an old friend. It also was the beginning of a whole new future; for some, college life. Few seniors gave graduation much thought until the very night Commencement began. Whenever graduation was mentioned, it was tossed off with little discussion, and usually with only carefree remarks. Even when the caps and gowns arrived, we still didn't realize how close the end was. When that night came, however, we were suddenly awakened, and it seemed to be all over much too soon. The yearbook staff this year has really done a fine job to sum- marize the 1967 year at Berea High School in these few pages. We feel that we have done an exceptional job, but it would have been impossible without help from our advisor, Mrs. Cook. Without her continuous pushing, we would never have made any of our deadlines. We hope that this volume of the BHS yearbook will occupy a special place on your bookshelves, and that you will keep it close at hand for frequent reference. We hope that this is an annual that each buyer can enjoy over and over again. BEREA HIGH -N = THE BOY'S AND GIRL'S TRACK TEAMS j This year Berea High School added a new sport, girls' track. The girls, G a ; ranging in age from twelve to seventeen, participated in local track meets and | ve in the Regional meet at Richmond, Kentucky. For the girls’ first year they each should be commended for such fine performances. The boys had four meets. Lexington Catholic and Tates Creek supplied tough competition, but Coach Palahunich said that he felt as though Berea High made a good showing. At the Bluegrass Conference meet, the Pirates took a runner-up, losing by only four points, In the regional, the boys earned 31 points, and Steve Kiteck won the high jump. He represented B. H. Jerry Tull - President, Carl Hazelwood - Vice President, Clara Ray Duerson - Secretary- Treasurer, Beverly Johnson - Reporter This year's Senior Class turned out to be the most unique Senior Class in the history of Berea High, Each day on the bulletin, under the tardy or absent section, the column of names beneath the heading Seniors was invariably the longest. We feel that this is some sort of record, Also, the '67 yearbook is the best ever (to which we are sure all will agree). The Senior play was a great success, not to mention the fact that we had a great time on the Senior trip. The Seniors were always being excused from classes to to something or to go somewhere, Practice for the Christmas play was worth about a week of classes; then there was the Speech Festival; each Monday the Honors English class worked on the yearbook; we were constantly getting out to take pictures or sell ads, go to yearbook clinics, and...well, when you get right down to it, we didn't come to school but two or three days the whole year! 43 BEST DANCERS Jim Pennington and Diane Kahlo FRANK ANDERSON National Honor Society 3,4; Pep Club 1; An- nual Staff 4; Senior Play 4. Junior Class... Donald Blackburn - Secretary, Kenny Duerson - President, Ann Barton - Treasurer, Glyn Green - Vice- President, Charlie Evans - Reporter The Junior Class has the responsibility of sponsoring the Junior-Senior prom. A great deal of work goes into raising money, planning the banquet, and decorating the gym, but all will agree that the effort was well worth it. The Juniors have priority on selling things to make money for the occasion and they took full advantage of it. If it wasn't candy, it was Stanley sales, and if it wasn't Stanley sales, it was magazines, or Pirate license plates, or...well, you name it. The only thing that the Juniors aren't taking into consideration is that next year, as Seniors, they will be twice as busy with the yearbook, the senior play, dramatics plays, planning for the senior trip, five times as much homework, college entrance tests, gobs and gobs of research papers, and...well, you name it. 55 Abney, Marty Asher, Mike Banks, Debbie Barton, Ann Blackburn, Don Britton, Jane Broaddus, Otis Calico, Gloria Calico, Patty Carter, Cheryl Conner, Sarah Cummins, Karol Davis, Jim Devere, Ronnie Dooley, Danny Duerson, Kenny Evans, Charlie 56 Gadd, Bobby (the Demon) Hamilton, Beverly Kelly, Connie Kirk, Iris LeGear, Gail McConnell, Pat McCracken, Sandra Moorhatch, Jean Mullins, Janice Parker, Rita Parsons, Herbert Gillespie, Ralph Green, Glyn Green, Verna Isaacs, Joyce Jennings, Diane Johnson, Danny Vicky Philpot Powell, Marie Reynolds, Paul Sharp, Dianne Shupe, Donnie Stanley, Joe Upton, Teresa Pictures not available for these people: Earl French, Mitch Mullins, Charles Rader, Betsy Turner, Charles Walker, and Theresa Wyatt. Mike Baugh - President, Linda Owens - Treasurer, Mike Coyle - Vice-President, Eddie Mac Wray - Reporter, Ticky Harrison - Secretary Just about the biggest thrill of the Sophomore Class would be the fact that they get the opportunity to take Phys, Ed. and Health. The boys are eager to get in those Health classes and learn about the birds and bees , but all the good pictures have been cut out of the films. Freshman Class... Well, the Freshmen! The Freshmen got a real shock when they found out that they didn't feel a bit older when they entered high school. The Freshmen also found out that a Freshman was the lowest being on earth. A famous example of mistreatment is the annual informal initiation of the Freshman ball players. The girls are confronted with the FHA initiation. (Ugh!) But no matter how impossible it now seems, these poor kids will be Seniors. (Heaven forbid!) SWVITIIM — Y3HDLNOYD a ee The new library, a memorial to President Francis S, Hutchins and his father William J. Hutchins, has been open since early March. As was true of the Carnegie Library, the new library serves the entire community and not only the college. Most Berea children, both in elementary and secondary grades, have already used the new library; but many adults have not. All Bereans are invited to inspect, and use, this new enrichment to the community. The seating and lighting facilities in the new building make for excep- tional comfort. The books are now available on the open-stack plan, which means that after you locate a book in the catalog, you may go to the stacks yourself, where you may find other books by the same author or on the same subject that you did not know about previously. A check system is used at the door as in all large libraries with open-stacks, The Hutchins Library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 7:30 to 4:30 on Saturdays. 122 NEW HUTCHINS LIBRARY View from the mezzanine showing the circulation and reserve desks, the card catalog, (background), and some of the open stacks on the mezzanine level. BEREA WATER AND ELECTRIC SERVICE During the past year the waterworks com- pleted an extensive expansion program. A new elevated storage tank was built in the west end. Larger, 12-inch feeder lines were laid and put into service from the west end to Lorraine Court. A new high-lift pumping station was put into operation. These improvements not only assure ioe a —— Storage tank in West End a sufficient water flow to all areas of the town but also prov ide for better fire protection. In addition, the college has made a study of the available water from the entire watershed area, which includes other locations besides the present three lakes. The study covered in- creased water needs based on the anticipated High-lift pumping station growth of the community in the next 15 to 20 Sy years, Negotiations are under way to get permits from the state to put steel encasements under I-75 to bring water service to the far side of the superhighway. This area already has electric service, Also, new heavier wire has been strung from Union Church to Chestnut Broadway as a protection against blackout during storms. We want to take this opportunity to thank the faculty for their patience and understanding. To the Annual Staff we extend our greatest thanks and ap- preciation for their time and effort in compiling this yearbook, We have worked hard, at all hours, and in many places (Upper Left) to bring this 1967 Pirate to you. We sincerely hope we have satisfactorily covered the events of the past year. May you cherish this chapter in the life of your school always and not place it on your shelves only to gather cobwebs, but thumb through it often to relive the days of nineteen hundred and sixty-seven, THE EDITORS
