Some of the labor assignments are in the Berea Student Industries which have the extra advantage of teaching an additional skill. These industries include bakery, broomcraft, candy kitchen, needlecraft, pottery, printing, weaving, and woodcraft. The girl shown above is working in the Sunshine Ballard Cottage, home of the Fireside Weavers. Some Berea graduates use this additional skill as a hobby in later years. Some have even become so interested in the additional acquired skill that they have turned it into their life work. But the Student Industries, like the extracurricular work in the Industrial Arts Department shown on the opposite page, are simply extra values at Berea. The emphasis is on the fact that Berea is a four-year liberal arts college with a strong academic program. The B. A. degree is offered in 22 fields of study, and the B. S. degree in Agriculture, Business Administration, Home Eco- nomics, Industrial Arts, and Nursing. 172 INDUSTRIAL ARTS At the William H. Danforth Industrial Arts Building, Berea College stu- dents take advantage of many opportunities for extracurricular work in wood, metal, pottery, and other materials. They have access to the fine equipment to make items for their personal use. The pictures on this page show a num- ber of student projects. Adults in Berea and surrounding communities may also enjoy the extracurricular activities. The Industrial Arts Department offers students (1) a teachers preparation program leading to a B. X. degree with a teaching certificate, (2) a curriculum leading to a B. S. degree in Industrial Technology, (3) a secondary Industrial Arts curriculum for students in Foundation School and Berea High School with courses in drawing, general shop, woodworking, auto mechanics, electricity, and machine shop. Visitors are always welcome at the Industrial Arts Building, as they are at the Student Industries and the Academic Buildings of Berea College, tt hy al inp arent % 173 ues ue oe o dOLS MONAL SSVAS ANTE 175 BURGER BROIL 176
