L I i i i ' ,pn-1 X - BEREA HIC-H VARSITY The Athletic Council is the main governing body of all athletics in Berea High School. lt is composed of the Super- intendent, Dean ot Ciirls, Coaches, two representatives from the Student Council, Cheerleaders, Faculty, and Student Managers, honorary captains of the various teams. This group governs all athletic attairs and expenditures and determines who should receive the various awards for ath- letic endeavor. THE ATHLETIC COUNCIL I I in I I Qmllivo I ni I oi'ty-Oni' This years football team enjoyed a very successful eason winning six tying one and dropping one Their only defeat was suffered at the hands of a strong Parma eleven which went undefeated Berea opened its schedule by fighting a tricky Maple Heights team to a O O draw Wooster was Berea s first victim A strong second half attack by the Red jackets netted Zl points and a Zl 6 victory A weak Norwalk team was trounrfed 33 6 ln this game as in the previous week s Candee and Hall were e big guns in the Berea attack a habit which they followed all season Conference play was begun with the River game Excellent blocking and hard running were the key to the Red jacket s 20 6 victory was in less than half of the game and it was the second team that scored 20 of our 27 points The final score was Z7 6 Berea literally pushed the Oberlin team all over the field in winn ng their fifth straight victory of the season 6 O Cleat credit goes to the few loyal rooters who endure the weather to see the contest A big and tough University School team lost to Berea by a l2 6 score The Preppers threw a scare into the Red jackets by their second half pass ing attack but the local boys managed to kecp them from scoring more than once Parma was reputed to be good and it was Due to their deadly pass ing attack and their strong defense they handed the i943 Berea eleven its first and only defeat I5 6 A highlight of the game was little Roy Hall s 85 yard return of the opening kickoff in the second half It gave a fitting close to his high scoring carrier and incidentally was one of the longest runs in the schools historv Folly fzeo . This year's basketball team was composed of boys who were junior Varsity players last year. That accounts for the fair season Berea had instead one of the great seasons of previous years, for basketball is a game in which plenty of experience is invaluable. The season opened with Berea playing host to Olmsted Falls. The Olmsted team edged the Red jackets 32-29 in a close battle. john lVlarshall's Senate team had too much experience and ability for the local lads, the Lawyer's racking up 44 to Berea's 24 points. Dick Phil- lips led the Berea scoring with l6 markers. Maple Heights was Berea's first victim falling to a count of 34-23. journeying to Bedford for their first-away game, the Red jackets were beaten 46-26. The Scarlet and Cray of Fairview humbled the jackets on their home court by a score of 36-26. At Oberlin the Berea team lost its second straight conference game 42 - 24.
