Senior class Chimes. INTRODUCTION WE ARE representative of the Appalachian Mountain region, other selected areas of the United States, and many foreign countries. We are ideal- ists. We are realists. Born with little, we dream big and fight fiercely for what we believe to be rightly ours. We are Bereans. WE HAVE COME to share in and perpetuate the basic principles and ideals of the founders of Berea and its long history of men and women who have helped it grow. WE BELONG to a small community in a world of communities ... a community of individuals sharing leadership, life, spirit, work, friendship, song, and fun . . . united in the search for knowl- edge, understanding, and truth. Throughout the following pages, you will see pictures depicting events that have taken place this year in the Berea community. You may not find your personal likeness; however, it is hoped that you will be able to identify yourself with the pictured happenings and that you may look through these pages years later and say, I remember this . . . this time, this place, this event. I did this, too. This reminds me of . . . And you will be haunted by a loneliness and a loveliness that you will never for- get. Here is the 1964 CHIMES. CONTENTS DEDICATION 6 17 COMMUNITY 19 LEADERSHIP 81 LIFE 95 FOUNDATION 173 PATRONAGE AND INDEXES 203 We have chosen momentous quotations to suggest the prin- ciples and ideals to which this book is dedicated. Through ab- straction, we hope to achieve an understanding of Berea College. The Scots from Maryville College were victims of a torrid onslought which produced a 103-39 triumph for the Bereans. However, the highlight of last Saturday ' s contest was the fantas- tic 51-point performance by the Mounty captain, Gene Reavis. Gene a senior, was engaging in the final home game of his college career- and he certainly finished in magnifi- cent style, as he achieved the highest individual point total in the 35 year history of Seabury Gymnasium. His 51 point total eclipsed the record of 44 points set by Everett Mutt Var- ney in 1960. Cinema Guild Termed Success by B. Cranford The excellent Italian film La Strada, shown last week by the Cinema Guild, prompts me to put in a word of support for this fine campus organization. The Guild has presented many choice films in the past few years and this year ' s pro- gram promises to provide more qual- ity entertainment. Future films include The Last Bridge (Austrian), 400 Blows (French), Oedipus Rex, and La Dolce Vita (Italian). The Guild ' s sponsors have chosen a wide film variety from different countries in an effort to present many cultural views. It is hoped that some of the films will arouse discussion about their controversial natures. Harmonica Society To Present Spring Show — Author Is T. J. Adams May 8 and 9 the Harmonica So- ciety will present its 1964 Spring musical, based on an original script by T. J. Adams. The contemporary play, centered on campus life and loves, will incorporate over 20 Broad- day show tunes from such all-time hits as Camelot. The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and many more, with lyrics especially adapted for this show. Activities Fund To Cover Movies — Games by Roy Birchard The Senate elected Ernie Woods S. A. Communications Officer this week to replace Rick Edwards. In addition, S. A. Vice President Hubert Henkle brought in a report on the proposed activities fee. The activities fee, as proposed, would cover campus movies and bas- ketball games at a fixed rate of $2.25 per semester. Henkle pointed out that this is less than half the cost of at- tending the evening movies in one semester alone. Bereans Organize As Volunteers Philip W. Conn, a member of the President ' s Appalachian Regional Commission, spoke about the Ken- tucky student Volunteer Program to a group of Sociology Club and C.A.M.P. members last Monday night. Mr. Conn sketched the back- ground of the program and pointed out that students on many campuses have already organized into groups. A meeting of delegates, includ- ing two from Berea, was held at Pine Mountain last week to discuss plans for a central administrative staff to unify these groups. Although the volunteer program is not a federal program, and will not involve federal expenditure, the government is especially interested in helping it get underway. Students and local volunteers can participate in many ways— working as X-ray mobile assistants and wel- fare case workers, helping in health departments and libraries, teaching adult education classes, etc. The more immediate projects which Berea Vol- unteers can participate in are the work camps held on Saturdays to repair and paint one-room school- houses. Service clubs on campus will provide information on these work- camps to interested students in the near future. COLLEGE IS FEATURED IN WALL STREET JOURNAL With the headline of Independ- ent College, the Wall Street Journal on September 26 published an extensive article about Berea Col- lege written by Clayton R. Among the special treasures is a complete set of Albrecht Durer ' s woodcuts illustrating The ' Life of the Virgin, the scenes were made in Germany before 1505. Twenty blocks make up the set, which depict the Apocryphal stories of the early life of Mary and significant events in the life of Christ. These large prints place the Biblical events in Durer ' s Germany, and both landscape and costume made them modern then. Durer was a friend of Martin Luther and very much in sympathy with his ideas and activities. Other Durer Prints Displayed beside the Life of the Virgin is a set of engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi (Italian, 15th Century) which copy the Durer prints, and were ' sold them as reproduc- tions. The difference in quality and sincerity is most apparent. In addi- tion, five other Durer prints are in the gift, including the Cannon of 1518, one of the first etchings ever made. Rembrandt van Ryn (Dutch, 1606- 1669) is represented by a group of six etchings, ranging in size and scope from a tiny landscape in deli- cate lines to the large and dramatic Descent from the Cross etched in 1633, and the intensely human Christ Preaching of 1652. Rembrandt ' s etchings, although very popular, are not common, and the group adds sig- nificant richness to Berea ' s study col- lection. Bullfight Series Francisco Goya (Spanish, 1746- 1828) etched his Bullfight series, the Tauromachia, in 1815, and the ex- hibit includes five of the complete set of 40 plates in the Poole gift. Goya, perhaps better known for his Disasters of War series, planned the Bullfight set as a history of this art in Spain, and the etchings describe not only the fights as practiced by the Moors, but also particular events and fighters of Goya ' s own time. Chanel Choir To Release Third Record This Spring The Berea College Chapel Choir will make a new recording this spring. Most of the rehearsals have been completed and the choir will probably make the third and last trip to Louisville for recordings on March 21.
