He has a protruding jaw... a stubborn streak and knows what he wants, but he is polite about it, and will get what he wants. He knows he is as good as the student in high class schools, but he does not know how to prove it. He came out of high school ignorant and in trying to make up, he doesn ' t know where to stop. He is a Negro who was told he is as good as anybody, but no better; still he wishes times were easier and humiliations fewer. a fighter I J but he likes to be forced into fighting, instead of forcing. He is independent, but he wants to be gregarious; he knows he will never be, but thinks maybe his children will. He is a chronic griper, but he expects nothing to come of his griping. He sits in smoky restaurants talking jive talk and protesting rules, but he is secretly glad of rules. He is often emotional. but he conceals it . The more he reads, the more he loves it, the more he laughs at himself for pretending to be a scholar. He despises a man who is weak and wishy-washy, and he admires a clear mind and a strong grip. fcΒ J He believes in working and prepar- ing for a good life . . . but a lucky break is welcome, though to count on it is foolish. Through discussion, planning, and working with other students, we gain insights into ourselves and the world around us. We learn the principles of representative government and gain an understanding of the responsibilities of democratic life. We as students must recognize our right to govern ourselves responsibly and we must accept that responsibility of government. If we are to accept the leader- ship of the free world, we must learn the principles of responsible leadership now. 74 Dean Orwig, Ike Vanderpool, Betty Ramey, Betty Mar Allen, Bonnie Burke, Todd Repass, Christine Hopkins, John Beall, Dean McReynolds, Bill Teague, Judy Myers, Ron Hayes, Harry Lee Simpson, Roscoe Robinson, Raleigh Johnson. Although this was her first year as our class sponsor, she has encouraged us both as a class and as indi- viduals during our entire high school career. As we leave Foundation and strive for our separate goals, we will always have memories of Mrs. Gunkler which will serve as an inspiration for us. In deepest grati- tude, we the Class of 1963 humbly dedicate this Chimes to Mrs. 0. H. Gunkler. Come right in. Well, fancy meeting you here. James Hall in the swing of things. But really now. Somebody up there likes me. The line-up. Halloween night, and they can still walk a straight line. : EDITORIAL On behalf of fhe Sfaff, I want to thank Dean Kenneth Thompson for patiently sponsoring us again this year and Mr. Bob Walter of S. B. Newman Printing Company for doing what we consider to be a good job of directing us and printing our materials. Also, a great big THANK YOU goes to all you truly big-hearted fellow Bereans who, not being on the official CHIMES Staff and realizing that you would receive no personal recognition for your aid to us, several times pitched in to help us take care of the wolf-of-a-deadline at our door β€” often, a deadline the Staff might never have met without your help. And now β€” let me change my position and speak not for but to the ' 63 CHIMES Staff. I congratulate you on your work and the attitude in which you did it. You worked steadily and, for the most part, cheer- fully late, late hours when you had nothing to lose but your whole point standings. True β€” to some of our viewers, the ' 63 CHIMES may seem somewhat less than professionally done, and true, there were those times when we all, after thinking we had at last done something perfectly, found that we truly had β€” perfectly backwards. But, frankly, I think you have produced a good yearbook for your fellow students, and the manner in which you have done it makes me proud to inform you that not only have you produced creditably The Berea Story of 1963, but you your- selves have also been a good part of it.
