In the years we have spent here at Berea, we have met many people, learned many things, acquired and relinquished ideals and hopes. These years have given us maturity, understanding, and memo- ries — memories of friends, classes, parties, professors, and other things too numerous to list. We have watched the sun rising be- tween two hollows of the mountains and in watching we have been awed by this wonder. We have climbed the Pinnacles and surveyed the glory of the mountains. We have sloshed through messy rain and a maze of black umbrellas. We have taken part in countless hours of dormi- tory bull-sessions. We have felt the thrilling experience of mastering a ques- tion, or a test, or an entire book or class. We have been silenced by the chimes, as the sounds drift across the campus, from Knapp Hall to Cumberland Hall. We have been filled with a renewed experi- ence of that which is holy at the Sunday night chapels. We have been busy, ex- hausted, overjoyed, sad, and all of these have been rewarding. As the years pass, many of these ex- periences will fade. As a barrier against entire obliteration we — the class of 1959 — have gathered as many memories as we could and have put theni into this book, the ' 59 Chimes. — The Editor
