Despite his duties as the Director of Guidance, Charles Shutt finds time to be with his family. Here he is shown with his wife, Dr. Jane Shutt, whom he married in 1945, and his two children, Constance Ellen, age four, and Christopher Clark, age three.

When asked about a philosophy of life, Dean Shutt said, It seems to me that success in life depends on how the individual plans to face up to his responsibilities. It is not just an acci- dent or on the spur of the moment that a person carries out his responsibilities, but how he plans to meet those responsibilities. I think of a person ' s duties as three: One is to do the best he can in the job he holds; second, to be of greatest possible help to people whom he meets; and third, which I think is the most important of all and can ' t be separated from the other two, to do the best to represent the spirit of Christ in every way. We feel that Charles Shutt, during his stay at Berea since 19H, has carried out his respon- sibilities. As a teacher of Latin in the Academy, as a teacher of English and Bible, as the Dean of the Academy, as the Dean of the Lower Division (which consisted of the last two years of high school and the first two years of college), and as the Director of Guidance, Dean Shutt has given us many reasons to admire and respect him. Since our first week on Berea ' s campus, when we heard the famous green-tie story, we have been im- pressed by his willingness to help. In reply to our question as to what had kept him at Berea fcr forty-four years, Dean Shutt answered, Whenever I thought of the work at Berea ' and the life here — the association with the students, the teachers, and the townspeople — well, I have never found any place that could measure up to it. For this, we, the students, thank you, Dean Shutt. We hope that you will always feel that you have gained as much from knowing us as we certainly have gained by knowing you.
