These years have given us maturity, understanding, and memo- ries — memories of friends, classes, parties, professors, and other things too numerous to list. We have watched the sun rising be- tween two hollows of the mountains and in watching we have been awed by this wonder. We have climbed the Pinnacles and surveyed the glory of the mountains. We have sloshed through messy rain and a maze of black umbrellas. We have taken part in countless hours of dormi- tory bull-sessions. We have felt the thrilling experience of mastering a ques- tion, or a test, or an entire book or class. We have been silenced by the chimes, as the sounds drift across the campus, from Knapp Hall to Cumberland Hall. We have been filled with a renewed experi- ence of that which is holy at the Sunday night chapels. We have been busy, ex- hausted, overjoyed, sad, and all of these have been rewarding. As the years pass, many of these ex- periences will fade. As a barrier against entire obliteration we — the class of 1959 — have gathered as many memories as we could and have put theni into this book, the ' 59 Chimes. — The Editor Dedication With humbleness and respect, and yet with a certain pride, the class of ' S9 dedicates its Chimes to Charles Noble Shutt. C4-54-3 Despite his duties as the Director of Guidance, Charles Shutt finds time to be with his family. Here he is shown with his wife, Dr. Jane Shutt, whom he married in 1945, and his two children, Constance Ellen, age four, and Christopher Clark, age three. When asked about a philosophy of life, Dean Shutt said, It seems to me that success in life depends on how the individual plans to face up to his responsibilities. It is not just an acci- dent or on the spur of the moment that a person carries out his responsibilities, but how he plans to meet those responsibilities. I think of a person ' s duties as three: One is to do the best he can in the job he holds; second, to be of greatest possible help to people whom he meets; and third, which I think is the most important of all and can ' t be separated from the other two, to do the best to represent the spirit of Christ in every way. We feel that Charles Shutt, during his stay at Berea since 19H, has carried out his respon- sibilities. As a teacher of Latin in the Academy, as a teacher of English and Bible, as the Dean of the Academy, as the Dean of the Lower Division (which consisted of the last two years of high school and the first two years of college), and as the Director of Guidance, Dean Shutt has given us many reasons to admire and respect him. Since our first week on Berea ' s campus, when we heard the famous green-tie story, we have been im- pressed by his willingness to help. In reply to our question as to what had kept him at Berea fcr forty-four years, Dean Shutt answered, Whenever I thought of the work at Berea ' and the life here — the association with the students, the teachers, and the townspeople — well, I have never found any place that could measure up to it. For this, we, the students, thank you, Dean Shutt. We hope that you will always feel that you have gained as much from knowing us as we certainly have gained by knowing you. Teachers College, Columbia Univ.; M.A., 1958, Columbia Univ.; Berea 1958— The four year nursing curriculum is based on the recommendations of the National League for Nursing and has been initially approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration. Final approval is not given until the first class has been graduated. This school year saw the last graduation class under the three-year program. In addition to the objectives shared by all Berea College Departments, the Department of Nursing is striving to; provide a four-year college education for students entering upon careers in nursing, thus giving them an educational experience comparable to those available in other undergraduate professional programs; prepare well-selected students for giving effective nurs- ing care and for filling first-level positions in nursing fields; develop a self-directing, service-motivated nurse, conscious of the high calling of her profession and of her responsibilities and rewards in it; to give experience in public health nursing in rural areas, to acquaint stu- dents with the needs and problems of those areas, and to challenge them with the opportunity for service in such areas. 77 September 19 J 8 Graduate Nurses First row. Dean Allen once remarked that she always tried to be first a person, then an administrator. We feel that she has amply succeeded in this, and we can only try to thank her for all she has given us — as a person and as an administrator. Above: A member of the Advisory Board of the Y, Dean Allen entertains at a Y Meeting. Right: A famil amiliar scene. 99 Administration and Faculty The years ahead no one can number. The College itself must have concerns; it must have a spirit and life of its own. The College is not just a repository of learning with students and teachers poking about among dusty volumes. In Berea College I believe that we must have an atti- tude of free inquiry and we must have an en- vironment which will permit us to hear the trumpet calls of love, justice, courage, self- mastery, mercy, liberty. -Francis Hutchins 100 President Francis S. Secondary Student Teaching Secondary student teachers do their on-campus teaching in the Foundation School and Berea High School. Off-campus student teaching is done in Rockcastle, Lincoln, and Pulaski Counties, and in the towns of Lexington and Stanford. Approxi- mately 3 5 supervising teachers work with our students in the off-campus locations. Students in Secondary Education hold their share of positions of leadership and honor while on the campus and upon graduation they assume roles of importance in their chosen fields. All who have elected to attend Graduate School have made excellent records. More and more superintendents of schools are saying, Send us more Berea graduates. And so it is that this year the largest class of student teachers at Berea College is preparing to uphold the tradition. 178 Student teachers at work ' ! «T : 5 m3 ■Si Fl m 1 fl H W ' l X ' - ' ■ ' ■J 6 gjijsi k - w jji IgMf-Wi Above: The Director, the Student Teacher, and the Supervising Teacher plan together. During these twenty-five years we have been fortunate in finding many, but none have ever surpassed the people at Berea. Possibly it is because of the college ' s own long tradition of discovering and encourag- ing only the best and most representative handicrafts of the Southern Highlands. Whatever the reason, Berea has been outstandingly good to us. All the folks at the Stuart Nye Shop are warmly grateful.
