Thus pensive-like, alone As a hermit in the woods Where the night air cools the dark, From words to space And then in tones of deep satisfaction, Smiles carressed his brow And over his face peace came Like the dawn as from his lips Rolled words that sent a startling pain Riding on the still air — yet filling The solid atmosphere with fire; As in olden days when the one Who set the great example Lived among men, and taught in parables How they should live. Thus he spoke And felt secure as one holding the world In his hands, if it were possible, And closing the book with firm fingers As up he rose to march in steadfast gait To assure himself. He knew the thing Which had long troubled him was now like Dew giving drink to a thirsty flower. — Garland Thayer CAIN IN THE FOREHEAD Tomorrow I will try again. Sweet hell, will I ever know to put the brush down. I had touched the lips a tender one too many and then all the magic was gone out of the forehead. I loved the lips and tried to make them happy turning down. Over my bed, now the lights are out, the leaf shadows play like mad bats on a piece of light my window lets in. His spoiled face dries between the covers of a book where I did not cross it with the mark that says I failed. My brush sleeps and I sleep too. All night long the shadow leaves play above my bed. Somewhere he sleeps — not on paper with happy lips — on white sheets he lies. Then he slept in the river . . . three days before they found him. They wouldn ' t let me see him; my father and my mother pushed me back as if I were a child, but I wasn ' t a child I was twenty and he was dead — drowned in the black river and I loved him ... he wasn ' t anything to them. But I did see . . . they left him alone in the attic and I went up to the cold attic . . . he was lying in a coffin . . . there was a mask on his face, I thought because it had been muti- lated lying in the river ... it was like his face only larger and it didn ' t have the sign. Then I went to the window I thought I was going to be sick ... it was a long way down; then the ground came up at me and my head went round but I wasn ' t sick and I ran down the stairs crying. His friend was crying too. I had never seen a man cry like that before . . . sobbing like that. He was lying on the bed ... I put my face down to his and tasted the salt tears and kissed his lips . . . then . . . both our mouths filled up with blood. I didn ' t see red, but I knew because sometimes my nose bleeds, and it tastes like that. I woke up then and I knew it wasn ' t his friend — it was he I had kissed, and it was too good to have dreamed to think about the blood. Tomorrow I walk and walk in the rain. It has grown quite dark, but I keep on walking. My hair sticks to my head all round, my feet are very wet, and I can hear my shoes squish when I walk. My clothes are wet too because my raincoat does not turn water. I am not thinking of anything. I feel as if I were listening to music, but all I hear is the rain. I am walking in the road where hedges grow close up all along, and when you have to step aside you have to push into the wet bushes. But nothing has passed. Then a light is before me in the road a few feet away, and I walk very slowly to the side. The car slows and misses me. My coat has touched the side of the car ... I walk on. Then I begin to think how he almost hit me . . . and it doesn ' t seem to matter one way or the other. Then I begin to think about the dream. I wonder why I didn ' t, the pain was so great when they told me he was dead. I never knew pain like that. I go to my room and get the wet things off. I drink hot coffee and wrap my feet in something warm. Then I lie on my bed. Everything seems very distant and very clean. When I lifted the mask there wasn ' t anything under it. I get up and go to the mirror and look at my forehead. It is white and clear and purged by the rain, I think. My eyes look back at me like two strangers. My nose feels funny and I sneeze. Then I go back to bed and soon I sleep in spite of the hot black coffee. — Rubye Teague MUSIC Music. Light, gay, like a fairy Tugging at my heart Daring me be sad. Music. Leading me through doors That cease to exist To enchantment — White clouds Blue skies Rainbows, ail color And dreams come true — And happiness. Music. Sombre, dark, like a tear That drops into a cesspool Black. Music. In company with shadowed thought Through dense forest And unstarred skies. Music. — Vivian Barker APPRECIATION Artist of music — of living, whose skillful hands draw forth the harmonies of life existing latent within the being, I have continued to wear the binding vestment of flesh in this atonal human chorus, Because you created, sustained, and blended purpose, love, and striving into a song my soul can sing. — Marjorie Keener THE UNTOUCHABLE It was cold that day. The world had a nasty white sneer on its snow-clad face. The bus was packed: young college students, never away from home before, returning for the holidays; laborers, dirt grimed from the factories ' filth, thinking of home and a warm plate of beans; old ladies homeward bound after the last minute shopping; hardened servicemen, coming home from duty in time for Christmas; giggly high school kids, dressed in jeans, discussing the teams ' possi- bilities in the basketball tournament; busin essme n heme from the office, cursing the ration board, the car shortage. Strange what a conglomeration of faces It was cold that day. That was the reason for the fur coat. Sneery, nasty snow, dom- ineering Christmas trees, bearded Santa Clauses, Salvation Army bells and fur coats go to- gether, don ' t they? One of the elderly ladies wore a fur coat. But that was different — she wore it with as- surance, sensing that the blue of her scarf and her gloves matched, that they were right this season. The Untouchable merely wore a fur coat. It was the Christmas season. That was the reason for the golden sandals. Bright lights, tinsel, angel hair, silver icicles, gold — that ' s Christmas, isn ' t it? One of the college girls wore gold, and that was right. Gold from Harper ' s Bazzar, gold that accented her blonde hair with the Helena Rubinstein rinse. The Untouchable merely wore golden sandals that punctuated her tampered with blonde hair. It was windy that day. That was the reason for the slacks. Cold winter wind of the Kanawha River, nasty, sneery snow, blocks to walk after the bus stop — why not slacks? The high school girls wore jeans. But they wore Pea coats and saddles too. The Un- touchable didn ' t — she merely wore slacks. Mangy fur coat, tightened face, tampered with blonde hair, tight sweater, red ankle socks, golden sandals, kelly green slacks — oh, you find that in any town. Just walk down the streets which nice people avoid. It may be Chicago ' s Loop or Charleston ' s red light district, but when you look, it ' s there. Look, yes, look, but don ' t forget to see. You wouldn ' t judge a book by its cover, would you? The Untouchable was the last to enter; the driver had placed monkey seats on the aisle to take care of the holiday rush. As the Untouchable took her place I saw heads turn — turn as if blown by that strong wind from the Kanawha River. High school girls displayed a sinful amount of curiosity. The laboring man, tired from the day ' s work of drudgery spat and rubbed his hands together. The college girls sniffed n disgust at the scent of Blue Waltz. The businessman thought contrastingly of his own wife, her conventional black suit, the angularity of her body. The serviceman, too long gone from home town girls with their short skirts, sloppy sweaters, and a single goodnight kiss, turned with a lust in his eyes. And the elderly lady with the fur coat, the blue scarf and gloves removed her hand from the arm rest as the Untouchable sat down. Mind if I smoke? the Untouchable inquired. It wouldn ' t make much difference if I did, seeing the kind you are, snapped the blue lady. If it bothers you I won ' t. I ain ' t never seen nothin ' that I can ' t do without, least ways for a spell. I just ain ' t had a fag since . . . Never mind. Go ahead. Your type never has any manners, always thinking of them- selves and their sinful ways. Don ' t you ever get ashamed and think of burning in Hell? Aren ' t you afraid of God? The Untouchable ' s vermillioned lips trembled. No, she replied, My God don ' t never frighten. He ' s merciful; He loves and He forgives; He understands. And then she added, more or less to herself, God didn ' t make me this way; that was the cold, the nasty white snow, the conglomeration of people . . . He forgives. The day was cold and the buzzer made a hissing sound as the businessman pulled the cord ct Capitol and Woodlawn. The blue lady moved to the seat beside the golden college girl who was smoking in Emily Post fashion — Hold the butt with right hand and inhale from the left corner of the mouth. There were a few words — university, formal, dress, engagement. The Untouchable pulled out a cigarette, lit it. A tear tumbled from her mascaraed eyes. Once those eyes had crows feet from laughing, but now there were only creases — creases from squinting in dark, musty places. It was cold that day. There was a nasty, sneery snow. There was a conglomeration of faces. And somewhere, someone was singing, Peace on Earth, good will toward men. Elenita R. Ellison PESSIMIST Can man reach farther than his arm is long ? Or sing louder than his voice is strong? Or warm his hands when the fire is gone? Can man push back a down-hill stream? Or weave a silk shawl from a fishhook dream? Or sift the good from the days now gone? OPTIMIST I must return to the market-place and to the Old Man As sells ripe fruit covering fat worms. He sells his gut-filled fruit for time And promises when floods appear Indifference. I will go back to the market-place And throw sharp words in the Old Man ' s face And lay one man-made worm-eaten case Before the higher court of Nature. — William Blair UNCERTAINTY In great tranquility The night with all its starry spaces Moves away Like a marionette on wires Leaving empty space Then through flashes of light We see that there is something unknown Which is fearful and superlatively painful Showing itself to be That unconceivable thing called life. And there is revealed in snatches No human certainty No estate beyond chance And the mind is strange to itself — A force of complete destruction. Some say humanity is divine But humanity draws behind its shadow And we turn away. There was a crooked man slowly with a foot that drags and hinders — a twisted foot that drags the humor down from mouth and eyes — at night he walks where no man sees and lingers with an emptiness and store-window eyes . . . and he walked a crooked mile where he found music wavered and water-widened in the path and the hill and a raindrop, a crystalline worm, inching itself along a black twig — and white streaks that crossed and crossed themselves before the holy sky . . . and he found a crooked sixpence the coin was in his hand and his hand was not his hand — ' . . . let the deed be upon us and on our children . . . ' and he carried the coin but he did not spend it (what man will trade bread for water?) he found a crooked cat . . . black shiny animal glinting as a devil ' s eye radiant and loneliness possessed he followed the sound of the twisted foot followed the path that flooded the hill — and stalking through the woods one day he caught a crooked mouse cats do not catch rats for pleasure pleasure does not care to eat — but this rat had a fine sense of humor could recite amazing bits of poetry — and so for the sake of pleasure they all lived together and there was dissonance and they knew there was dissonance but the crooked ones in the little crooked house found dissonance was consonance . . . -Marie Day Butler BEREA ' S FEAVER Five minutes after the bell, Feaver rushes in Soon after, confusion crosses craniums again. He raises windows and questions And proceeds the board to erase, Turns toward the group revealing Remains of breakfast on his face. Students grit unwashed teeth And are driven totally sane By the great theories flowing From Feaver ' s tabula rasa brain. Amid class roars and snores And sneaking out the doors, A student boldly raises a hand; And quotes, with eyes bright, Sir, I may not be quite right, But a point I don ' t understand. Feaver ' hems ' and he ' haws ' Beats his head against walls Cries, Eureka, I ' ll argue you down. Draws diagrams, squares, and rings All sorts of queer chalked things, While speeches with wit abound. To prevent classroom woe Feaver proceeds with a show Of lecturing long and with full force After finding it stable He climbs on the table And recites some more of the course. Until the Draper bell resounds Feaver pounds and expounds For, seriously, he seems to know much; As amateur philosophers amble out Come back is his last shout Students do — for rare is tale of such. — Betty Webber o o x 01 0 in X 0) «- 1 ° 0 CO o j: 0) 4- c o _ X 41 -z in o E 01 m- 01 O in 4- U — Q. - - ( ) 4- C « O ■£ - i i c o o 71 5 i -° ■£ ■8- VI 01 5| a 5 ' S is 01 01 o c = -o T C _l I o -C V O. PARIS, ILLINOIS Can you imagine a home without Photographs of thos e we love and those who love us? Why it just could not be! There is the picture of Mother taken on her wedding day and the funny one of Dad taken in 1929, the year they gave him an interest in the business, and that good one taken last Christmas — and would vou believe it that freckled faced boy in the other photograph is now our six-foot Bob, and the little girl beside him is Mary, who is married and has children of her own, and last of all tucked away in a trunk with a pair of tiny tear stained booties, is a picture of Ethel the baby, whom the Angels lent us but just for a happy holiday. For Mother she lives eternally in that tear-stained photograph. Photography has come to fill a place in all our lives and I hope Daguerre who discovered it can look down from heaven and see what came of running around trying to catch sunlight in a little black box.
