We inspected other annuals; we talked with men experienced in college yearbook publishing; and all along we had our own ideas. We discussed, dis- agreed, and fought. We grinned, shook hands, and planned some more. We used about 217 flash bulbs, 1679 sheets of typing paper, 46 3 sheets of copy paper, 1 1 2 gallons of rubber cement, 47 big sheets of mounting board, 4 or 5 partially complete 168-page dummies, and more man hours of hard labor than the average college student spends in four years of classes. We wore out two sets of bicycle tires rushing from the printers to the CHIMES office, to the pho- tographer ' s, to the CHIMES office, to the printers; we demolished some 23 pairs of shoe soles walking while someone else had the bike. The volt- age used in lighting the office while the rest of the world slept would be sufficient to keep the college amply illuminated from now till Home-coming. We missed classes, dropped courses just in the nick of time, cut chapels, yes, even missed meals, in order to make the 1942 CHIMES more than an artist ' s conception on high- grade newsprint. After dropping six straight games, including the pre-season loss to a more experienced alumni quintet, the Big Blue team marched into the University of Louisville gym and carried away a 37-3 3 victory. The first conference loss for the Cardinals was due largely to the sensational shooting of Sophomore Doc Heinze who swished the net for 17 points. Bays, playing one of the best defensive games of his career, held Louisville ' s star forward Epley to 14 points. Three days after the victory over Louisville, Morehead came to town, cocky and undefeated. After these two surprise victories the Mountaineers were into the win column until the K.I.A.C. tournament. In the second they defeated Center 3 3-30 and in the third round lost to team 5 3-34. Bays, Moore and Kirby will graduate from the team, but Offy le hind a quintet of Sophomores who will give the Alumni a rea ' Thanksgiving. No one ever knew what might appear in the next issue, and from the sound of some of it, neither did Editor Carrington. And of course if the editorial didn ' t have something surprising in it, Spots O ' Grease sometimes got off a good joke . . . even if it was a little battered and misused, but Vanderheide had a good sense of humor. Tampa ' s col- umn, when it appeared, gave the latest score of the World Series game or a plav-by-play description of battles on the hardwood. But even with this competent staff the editor had his troubles, which forced him to retire from active duty in favor of a rest. Even today he can show you grey hairs that aren ' t peroxided.
