Since 1920 she has directed the life of Boone Tavern. making it a distinctive hostelry . . . IRA D. SHAW Since 1 924 Professor Shaw has guided the prospective teachers oi Berea that, through his criticism and help, tliey might be better prepared to meet the problems of education today . . . MRS. DILLIE WERTENBERGER Mrs. W ' ertenberger came to Berea in 1914 and taught for a number of years in each of the three schools. In 1927 she became assistant ma-nager of Boone Tavern, where her lasting attachments with students and guests contributed both materially and spiritually to the growth of Berea . . . CLUB THE CHASTENING Thu Urimaiic Club has carried out its usual pro- gram of play production with a great deal of success and has expanded into new fields this year. In addi- tion to its regular full length plays the Club has presented one-act plays at the Tuesday night meet- ings throughout the year. The annual fall production of the Club was the I Iclen Jerome dramatization of Jane Austen ' s Pride and Prejudice. Dr. James Watt Raine was assisted in the direction of the play by Miss Maxine Wooten. All of A Sudden Peggy was the spring play, and Its double cast worked under student directors Fran- ces Lillard and Mayme Hensley. With the assistance of Miss Emily Ann Smith and Mrs. Charles Morgan the Club presented Charles Rann Kennedy ' s The Chastening. C R E A T I V E W R I T I N G The Class of 1939 believes that the written expression of the Berea students of the past year is and should be an integral part of our annual. Therefore, we continue the creative writing section as instituted b ' the Class of 1937. This section makes no pretense to include the best writing done in Berea this year. At first it is only a part of the Appalachians that stretch their blue miles in the dis- tance, but slowly the road becomes hilly and devious and we become a part of the blue mist and slopini; hills. We rotmd a curve suddenK ' and the Pinnacle stands before us — sharp, tangible, and friendly — and I am home. We climbed it first in sprin;; when the air was heav ' with moisture and the sood smell of damp, stirring earth. Climbint frantically for the top, clutching at the rocks and limber trees, panting hard, laughing occasionally at nothing. Anti reaching the summit we clung to the rough rocks and looked below. The fields stretched themselves over the hills in quilt-like patterns of squares and triangles, strung together b ' the slick, black road. The soft mist of hills in the distance shaded indefiniteh ' into the horizon. How many times 1 have climbed it since I do not know. Vague, poignant memories of Moun- tain Day haunt me — laughing voices, friendly, helping hands, and cameras clickmg; crisp, yellow leaves, and crumbly, moist earth beneath our fe;t; grape vines thrusting their gnarled branches into our paths, sharp briars; bushes with red ber. ' ies, and acres of goldenrod. And night memories, too — when the bright m3on hung above the Pinnacle, etching it in yellow light, and the trees were brittle and black. The limbs cracked as the wind tore through them — wind that straightened our hair, plastered our clothin:; to our bodies, and forced us to clutch franticallv at the cold rocks. Ten years from now 1 shall return. Other things will have changed and I shall be a stranger in a strange land. But I can depend on the Pinnacle. Beside the pool, it was believed, long-haired Medva crouched in the thicket ready to spring at swimmers without crosses on their necks, whom she tickled in the ribs and then strangled among the frogs. I want to stroll along the crook of the wagon road where grandmother Vassilchenko hobbled after a scampering group of children, thre.ttening with her birch stick, I ' ll report vou to the Pope for picking my cabbage leaves! 1 want to feel the soft earth in which we played jacks with red, green, and blue pigs ' knuckles. I want to be present in the street again through which the first tractor caterpillared, whose myster- ious loud rumble hurried the villagers from their work — with pitch-forks, rakes, and hoes — to view the monster bumble-bee. Then, no matter how far I go, there are always my relatives. And though I may be very different from them in many ways, in their faces are peculiar lines and angles which have a magnetic familiarity. That sun-parched village seems strange and remote to me now. But It is the same path — that leads to the old mill pond. The old pond is silent tonij;ht; undisturbed, peaceful except for a low muffled ripple in the millstream. I kneel on the turf and dip my hands in the refreshinj water. That is what wc used to do when we would wander off down that path. On warm nights when the moon was high and full, wc used to steal off down here. . . just to dip and splash our bare feet in the watCT. The pond is still here; and just over there she lies; her grave sunken and filled with leaves and covered with a wild rose briar which has twisted and entwined itself about a worn, battered head- stone, now dislodged and lying to one side. She bestowed upon all the sisterly love she gave me. She thrived on friendship. It encouraged her, made her happy, and cheerful, and gave her a smile that will haunt me forever. Although some would say that Lucas is just damn lazy , some would say he is afflicted with abulia, some would say he is sapped by hookworm, some would say he is a shiftless, unsatisfied dawdler, my close acquaintance with him woulci not allow me to agree with any one of these accusations. His way is a way of life — an attitude toward the world he drags about in. Everybody knows how Lucas gets about With his head and his arms hanging down. Everybody sees him as he goes and comes, lor he sticks pretty close to the ground. Sometimes I let her count for me or tell about the picture in the primer. She knew who Tan was, and jack, and Nell, and could tell the story of each page. At recess, Mary jane used to think she was readinj nursery rhymes. She tiot the big j reen Mother Goose book from the library, stuck her legs straight out to hold it on her lap and flapped the pages e.xpertly until she found one Blanche had taught her. With her bangs in her eyes and a moist finger racing back and forth along the lines she recited: Diddle-diddle-dumpling! My son John Went to bed with hjs britches on One shoe off and one shoe on. Diddle-diddle-dumpling! My son John! Bcrkcle had a tin ' yellow ball he lent to the little children to keep them out of the big boys ' way on the playground. Mary |ane liked to bat it up in the air and let it fall among inexpert catchers. Her contemptuous Aw, shucks! announced a miss and her sudden laugh followed ever - hit. Nobody ever claimed the bat, if he caught the ball. She just knocked until she tired of it. Mary jane never talked in school. She just whispered very loudly and made numberless bare- footed trips to the wastebasket. Soon she learned to be ekscused without Blanche. We did not see our little visitor in November at all. It was too far and too cold. But she was there at Christmas with her round eyes rounder than usual. I ' ll come back when it ' s warm, she promised, as I pulled her toboggan down over her ears. But she didn ' t come. [n January there was a measles epidemic. One Monday Blanche didn ' t come. The Musick children said that she and Mary jane had the measles . Next day the Musick children were absent. At recess, Mr. Musick came to tell us that Mary jane was dead. We had classes the rest of the day. Nobody said anything about Mary jane after the first few minutes. At recess, they batted the yellow ball as usual. Everybody clapped when 1 announced that school would be closed for three weeks, and after dismissal, there was a pushing, laughing race to the library in the corner to check out books for the holiday as thev called it. Thev wrote their names on the library slips and dropped them on my desk as they passed. Vernard had the big green Mother Goose book — the one that was too big for a little girl ' s lap. He tucked it under his arm awkwardly and ran out whistling. Lanky Joe Greene, who came up and filled the gap left bv Captain Kelly Keith last year, tips the ball, and the game is on. Our boys scamper around. Four of them are seasoned men from last year, and have that speedy Gunkler-break down pat. Big Joe or Devton takes the rebound, and like a meteor the ball flashes down the side — a long, back-handed hurl, perhaps from the clever hook of Fiappv Thomas, to Glen M .DoweIl in the east corner. Fie is hemmed like a rabbit in a fence corner, but from some odd angle the ball escapes a forest of clamoring paws and sinks through the ring. Loud whistles — yells — Bass drum beats. As the applause sub- sides, Fierby Sebren ' s sheep bell continues to tinkle from the band section. Mountaineers! That ' s a picture of them as they played their last game this season on the home floor with Union. They won. Thev ga e us all a feeling of success. We saw our men, though out- reached and out-stood, play with fast, brotherly team work, and with the sportsmanship be- coming Mountaineers. The ringing chimes and the torch dance through the streets afterward showed our enthusiasm. With this spirit, the Blue and Whites played eleven games this year. They were victors in three of them. They finished ahead of Union, Louisville, Murray, and tied with Wesleyan for seventJT place in the K.LA.C. They fought valiantly in every game, whether it was won or lost, that friendly rivalry and cooperation to which Seabury Gymnasium is dedicated. Oscar Gunkler, Coach and Acting Physical Education Director, sustains that spirit in our boys through lean and fat ' ears alike, and we know he will perpetuate it. Five pals of the hardwood will turn in their shoes this year: Steadfast Oscar Deyton, de- pendable David Beldon, cunning Bartow Thomas, tricky Glen McDowell, and sweet Dallas Candy. McDowell garnered most points for the Gunklermen this season with lOL The captain was chosen at each game this year. Deyton, Beldon, and McDowell shared this honor. We hate to see gaps made in the team but other men of service are left to wear the white suits next year. Powell, Massey, Prater, Fiale, and Greene have all made a good showing in varsity competition. Coach also has outstanding frosh players who won four out of six games this year, to juggle into places in the Mountaineer squad. CROSS COUNTRY Most schools haye lost interest m this lengthy run. This year our boys almost quit training because no one answered their challenge for a chase. Fiowever when the answer finally came from Mars FFill College way out in North Carolina, Captain John Caudill whistled up his pack and ran down there to defeat them 26-52. The team was comprised of Caudill, Clark, Scherrer, Felton, Pilson, Whitaker, Pacas. TRACK Interest has been spurred up in track in the last few years. Perhaps other co]leg:s dislike to see Berea carry w .v the cup so consistently. The state meet last year saw four records shat- tered, so w.irni was the interest. SWIMMING The third year of intercollegiate swimming w as finished with plent - of success. Records were set and re-set as University of Kentucky, Eastern and Berea teams plowed the ripples for points. Berea did not win either of their three individual meets, but cime through for second place in the state meet. Grant Beglev from Hyden, Kentuck ' set the 200- -ard free-stvle up two seconds to 2:46. He held the record in this event from last year onl - to have Lewis of Universitv of Kentuckv cut it from 2:50 to 2:48. Begley and Charlie Brooks, coaches at the water ' s edge, are to be graduated, leaving the distance swimming and the springboard crippled. W ith the loss of Number One man, E dmund Durham, also Keith ancf McAfee, the racqueteers will need to swing a mean gut in order to come out in their scheduled appointments with the Universitv of Kentuckv and University of Cincinnati.
