Dejn of Women 2£i Co 2£ and (= o Dean Thomas A Hendricks on his sabbatical leave of absence is visiting many colleges of the South and West. In the absence of Dean Hendricks the title, as well as the duties of dean, has fallen upon Professor A. J. Chidester. The college has been very fortunate this year in securing Miss Julia F. Allen as Assist- ant Dean of Women. Miss Allen was graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in 1920, and was granted the M.A. degree at the University of Chicago. For five years she taught in the Christian Girls ' School in Nanking, China. In Chicago Miss Allen was for three years Girl Reserve Secretary. From 1931 until 193 5 she was Dean of Hamilton College, Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to her duties as assistant dean, Miss Allen teaches in the history department. Professor J. Wesley Hatcher was away the first semester of this year resting but also studying in the libraries of New York and Columbus. The first half of Mr. Hatcher ' s work was taken by Dr. E. J. Fisher who taught for twenty years in Robert College, Constantinople, Turkey. Dr. Fisher has been a noted lecturer at Chautauqua, New York, and leaving here he became assistant director of the Institute of International Educa- ti on, a unique organization in New York which does much to bring about an interna- tional exchange of students as well as good ' will. Mr. Alfred L. Severson took Dr. Fisher ' s classes for the second quarter. Mr. Severson received the A.B. and B.D. degrees at Drake University, and the M.A. at Chicago Uni- versity where he is now at work on his Ph.D. For a time Mr. Severson served as the minister of a community church in Indiana. Miss Mary L. Ela, in charge of the College Fine Arts Department, was given the task of initiating the new art building this year. After taking an A.B. degree at Oberlin Col- lege Miss Ela studied at the Chicago Art Institute. She has also spent a year studying in Paris, and has taught at Carleton College and Oberlin College. Mr. J. B. Loefer with the A.B. degree from Lawrence College and a Sc.M. and Ph.D. from t he New York University, and with a record of publications in the field of proto- zoology came this year to take up the classes of Dr. Raymond Cable who accepted a position in the graduate school of Purdue University. Dr. Julian Capps went to Harvard to try being a student instead of teaching for this semester. In his place is Mr. G. E. May who received his A.B. at DePauw and who is working on his Ph.D. at Cornell University. After spending the winter in Florida, because of ill health. Dr. W. R. Hutcherson returned to his classes early in April. One of Berea ' s own graduates, Rector R. Hardin of the class of 1929, returned to the campus this year to teach in the department of economics. Mr. Hardin received both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University.
