DEDICATION TO HIGH BLACK MOUNTAINS AND TO DEEP GRAY SPACES, TO WIND AND RAIN AND SUN AND STARS, TO CROOKED WINDING ROADS, TO THE VERY SOIL FROM WHICH WE COME, THE MOUNTAIN TERRITORY, OF VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA, OF NORTH CAROLINA AND SOUTH CAROLINA OF GEORGIA AND ALABAMA. OF TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY, I DEDICATE THIS, OUR LAST RING OF THE CLIIMES. FOREWORD WE, THE CLASS OF 1936, HAVE COL- LECTED WITHIN THIS BOOK TANGIBLE RECORDS TO SUPPLEMENT OUR MEMORIES AGAINST THE YEARS WHEN FRESHMAN COMPOSITION, GLEE CLUBS, UNITED CHAP- EL, MOUNTAIN DAY, THE COOP, ARE IN- DISTINCT BUT PLEASING RECOLLECTIONS OF FOUR YEARS SPENT UNDER THE CHIMES TOWER. Campus Boautifiil The campus is most beautiful, said one, in the springtime when the tulips form triangles of red and yellow against the bright new grass. But I have known Berea in the summer, said another. There is nothing like the long green rows in the garden as they race over the black soil toward Silver Creek. I gloat most when the scarlet death is on the mountains in October, spoke a third. One asked for winter when the snow fleeces the big pine trees, and the hills are grained with sled tracks. And there are other things beautiful we would remember that belong to the campus: the horseshoe of holy faces on a Sunday morning in Union Church, the squirrels with their daring impudence, the sugary breath of the bakery, President Hutchins standing before Assembly, the song of the chimes at sundown. Teach ns the pow ' r of broad ' ning thought, The ii ill to stand alone. And the oaks grow gaunt when the winter lowers, And the hills stand sombre and gray. £cj£ dv £. czrfaain ins. e pxina Give me again the tender lilting Spring Where nine! and wild birds in green mansions sing. Give me the ground-mole with his baby-claws; Red fox so free he knows no bounds nor huts. Give me the night — the wail of soft guitars And mountain lovers walking under stars. Give me the mountain daisy on the slopes; Give me the nettles lined in sticky ropes. Give me the night time and the quivering leaf; Give me more Spring to live — Spring is too brief. That little pool of life men call a span; Thai pool of life allotted to each man. Ah give me life — the life that lasts forever Where night winds blow through willows by the river. Give me the violet beneath dead leaves Where Spring winds seep like water through sand sieves. The wail of Spring wind music is sweet heard, Much sweeter than a popping mockingbird. Give me more of this turbulent Spring youth. More of the shoemake ' s quick youth plastic growth. Give me more of the stable seeds to soweth In willowed lanes of glorious clouded youth. Give me forever all that is to me High starlit mountains to youth ' s certainty. — Jesse Stuart (Editor ' s note: No one can better speak for the mountains than Jesse Stuart. The dedication of this book to mountain territory is made more significant through Mr. Stuart ' s gracious contribution of Give Me Again The Spring and This Is The Schoolhouse. Ralph Thompson, speaking in the NEW YORK TIMES, says this of Jesse Stuart in re- viewing his recent, Head O ' ( ' -Hollow : A lot of water will go over the dam before Kentucky, or any other State, develops another writer with the art tliat is this 28-year-old farmer-poet-school teacher ' s. ) Frank Long, during moments when he was not supervising the painting of his murals for the Louisville Post Office, chose to speak of mountain life through the medium of the woodcut. The print included here is from a block specially and gratuitously de- signed for THE CHIMES. The Editor. There Berea stands on her winding crest. THH ( O] I EG] G MUM NS PRESIDENT WILLIAM J. Dejn of Women _ 2£i Co 2£ and (= o Dean Thomas A Hendricks on his sabbatical leave of absence is visiting many colleges of the South and West. In the absence of Dean Hendricks the title, as well as the duties of dean, has fallen upon Professor A. J. Chidester. The college has been very fortunate this year in securing Miss Julia F. Allen as Assist- ant Dean of Women. Miss Allen was graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in 1920, and was granted the M.A. degree at the University of Chicago. For five years she taught in the Christian Girls ' School in Nanking, China. In Chicago Miss Allen was for three years Girl Reserve Secretary. From 1931 until 193 5 she was Dean of Hamilton College, Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to her duties as assistant dean, Miss Allen teaches in the history department. Professor J. Wesley Hatcher was away the first semester of this year resting but also studying in the libraries of New York and Columbus. The first half of Mr. Hatcher ' s work was taken by Dr. E. J. Fisher who taught for twenty years in Robert College, Constantinople, Turkey. Dr. Fisher has been a noted lecturer at Chautauqua, New York, and leaving here he became assistant director of the Institute of International Educa- ti on, a unique organization in New York which does much to bring about an interna- tional exchange of students as well as good ' will. Mr. Alfred L. Severson took Dr. Fisher ' s classes for the second quarter. Mr. Severson received the A.B. and B.D. degrees at Drake University, and the M.A. at Chicago Uni- versity where he is now at work on his Ph.D. For a time Mr. Severson served as the minister of a community church in Indiana. Miss Mary L. Ela, in charge of the College Fine Arts Department, was given the task of initiating the new art building this year. After taking an A.B. degree at Oberlin Col- lege Miss Ela studied at the Chicago Art Institute. She has also spent a year studying in Paris, and has taught at Carleton College and Oberlin College. Mr. J. B. Loefer with the A.B. degree from Lawrence College and a Sc.M. and Ph.D. from t he New York University, and with a record of publications in the field of proto- zoology came this year to take up the classes of Dr. Raymond Cable who accepted a position in the graduate school of Purdue University. Dr. Julian Capps went to Harvard to try being a student instead of teaching for this semester. In his place is Mr. G. E. May who received his A.B. at DePauw and who is working on his Ph.D. at Cornell University. After spending the winter in Florida, because of ill health. Dr. W. R. Hutcherson returned to his classes early in April. One of Berea ' s own graduates, Rector R. Hardin of the class of 1929, returned to the campus this year to teach in the department of economics. Mr. Hardin received both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University. RALPH M. COOKE Elkin, N. C. B.A., Chemistry President Senior Class; PI ' German Club Union 2, V. PEP SONG In the mountains of Kentucky Stands Berea, stalwart, strong — All her s ons are mighty plucky, And here ' s their fighting song! CHORUS We ' re here to cheer for old Berea, Upholding high the White and Blue; We ' re here to keep our colors streaming, To show the world what we can do! You ' re here to play for Alma Mater, Oh, fight and fight! Drive right on through! And in the end, team, we know you ' ll be supreme- Over the top with the White and Blue. (These 3re the first lines of a pep song written by members of the Class of ' 36 in the sophomore year. It is the hope of the class that other verses will be added by later classes. The music can be secured at the Alumni Office.) PRESIDENT _. MARVIN O. SHRADER VICE PRESIDENT. MARGARET LOUISE WALTERS SECRETARY __ NETTIE A. RICH TREASURER THADDEUS T. Abbott EDITOR THE CHIMES is entirely a student publication, done by students carrying a full load of classes. The completion of it has meant hours of work for members of the staff, hours of work aside from reading, study, or extra curricular interest. An attempt has been made to include all representative activities of the campus, activities which will serve as a stimulus for reminiscence years after the present grad- uating classes have gone. The success of such a venture has depended upon the coopera- tion of the several organizations and departments of the institution. Admittedly, in some instances success has not been complete. Some pictures were made too late for inclusion in the book, and the activities of some groups were not finished in time for complete stories of their work. Some people will like the annual, and some will not. Realizing that a publication of such a personal nature as a yearbook cannot in its entirety satisfy all persons with whom it is concerned, the staff of THE CHIMES has hoped only to satisfy as many as possible. The editor and the business manager are grateful to Frank Long and Jesse Stuart for their contributions; to the members of the staff who have been earnestly concerned with the success of the book; to the College Press for working many over-time hours; to the advertisers; to the Ogg Studio for kind cooperation; and to all other individuals and groups who have aided with the publication of THE CHIMES OF 193 6. DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatics Club has given almost one hundred students a chance to gain actual experience in acting and producing in the many one-act plays presented at the Tuesday night meetings. This year a special effort was made to use plays and methods that will prove practical for community and school work. The public has been permitted to see Abner ' s Cove, a play written by Dr. Raine and given for the trustees of the college, The King Forgets, presented to the Assembly in March, and two major plays, in the fall The Man From Toronto, and in the spring The First Mrs. Fraser. . - S -« ' ll«- llOIII - I.U-lM-lil ' ALPHA PSI OMEGA The Berea chapter of the Alpha Psi Omega, national honorary dramatic fraternity, was established in Berea College in 1932. Those members of the Dramatics Club who have earned at least twenty points in acting, directing, costuming, and general pro- ducing are eligible for election to the fraternity. Since this is an honor society it stimu- lates students to a high standard of work, and provides a wider fellowship for those interested in the art of play production. Nine new members have been added this year. Omega Gentry, Claud Scroggs, Betty Vaughn, Annie Lee Goins, Orla Deyton, Estill Meadows. James Watt Raine, Myrtle Janey, Clarice Crumley, Norman Wheeler, Miriam Brewer, Lois Deyton. Mr. J. w . Sattler, Elzie Wesley, Clarice Crumley, Pres., Cecil Culbertson, Lily Bennett, Mr. Rex Hjrdin, Dean A. G. «eidler. Sec. and Tre.is. TAtT KAPPA ALPHA Tau Kappa Alpha, national forensic fraternity, sponsors all the forensic activities: debating, oratory, and various forms of public speaking that are a part of the campus extra curriculum. Campus forensics have been unusually gratifying this year. First honors in the Home Peace Oratorical contest, held in the fall, went to Carlton Miller, sophomore; second and third were awarded to Elzie Wesley and Clarice Crumley, respectively. Mr. Miller fol- lowed through to win the State Contest held in Berea a few days later. The spring oratorical contest for women was won by Lily Bennet, senior. Mary Ann Cason ranked second and Betty Lamb third. In the men ' s spring contest Elzie Wesley was first choice, John Williams second, and James Stepp third. On March 7, Miss Bennett and Mr. Wesley represented Berea in the State contest at Bowling Green, Ky. Again Miss Bennett was selected as winner, but Mr. Wesley was eliminated. Miss Bennett ' s victory won her a place in the National contest, held at Evanston, 111. In debating, various attempts were made to break away from the rigid system of the past. The season was opened with the forum system in which the problem is discussed in a frank and honest manner from every possible angle. Elzie Wesley and Clarice Crumley began the series with a discussion with Maryville College, of Tennessee. James Stepp and Vernon McDaniel met the team from the University of Dayton in a regular debate on the proposition: Resolved, that Congress should have the power to override, by a two-thirds majority vote, any decision of the Supreme Court declaring an Act of Con- gress unconstitutional. On February 2 9, Berea sent five teams to Lexington to participate in a round-robin tournament with the representatives of various colleges throughout Kentucky and Ohio. The results of the tournament have not been announced. Betty Lamb and Mary Ann Cason met the women debaters from Western State Teach- ers College and Lloyd Roberts and Harold Brown Clark met the Western men debaters here in a non-decision debate on March 19. At the spring regional convention of Tau Kappa Alpha, held in Cincinnati on March 20 and 21, a system of debating known as heckling was followed. In this style each speaker, after briefly presenting his case, is vigorously cross-questioned by the opposing team. Clarice Crumley and Carlton Miller won first honors in the convention heckling tournament. James Stepp received the trophy for first place in after-dinner speaking. And Mr. J. W. Sattler, coach of Berea forensics, was elected chairman of the regional convention for next year. The forensic season was cut somewhat short this year because of the prevalence of epidemics throughout the country. Clark, Henry Gardner, Kelly Keith, Major Gardner (Captain), Thomas Conover, John Adams. AT HLETICS SEASON ' S REVIEW BASKETBALL Climaxing a five-game losing streak, a final defeat by Eastern in the K.I.A.C. Tour- nament closed the Mountaineers ' basketball season. Four wins out of ten conference contests placed Berea in seventh position in K.I.A.C. rankings. The Gunklermen entered training quarters for the Varsity-Alumni Home-Coming game minus three men of last year ' s squad, Campbell, Dennis, and Ockerman. William Beanie Blair, returning after a season ' s absence because of injuries, and the influx of sophomores offset these losses. An eleven-point defeat at the hands of the all-star Alumni forces, a 5 8-3 defeat by the University of Kentucky in a late scheduled game, and a 41-26 defeat of Cumber- land College concluded the pre-conference schedule of the Mountaineers. The Blue and White has been given a position on the University of Kentucky ' s schedule for next season. Back from the holidays, Captain Major Gardner led the Mountaineers in a splendid victory over Eastern. Defeating the Maroon frosh in the preliminary, the Baby Moun- taineers doubled the victory. After a double repulsion from Georgetown ' s teams (Varsity 34-27, Frosh 33-18), Gunkler ' s men sent Wesleyan ' s Panthers back to Winchester defeated 37-31. On the fol- lowing week end the Mountaineers administered a poisonous potion to Centre ' s Colonels, 42-22. With pre-game talk ceding Berea a toss-up chance against Morehead, the Blue and White plucked the Eagles 58-40; Wright scored 20 points, Clark 14, and Roberts 8. Murray ' s giants whipped the Mountaineers 45-25; then followed four more successive defeats: 42-3 by Transylvania, 40-2 3 by Western, 5 3-40 by Louisville, and 40-30 by Eastern. Blair was the outstanding Blue and White player in the latter two contests. In the K.I.A.C. tournament, Berea drew easy starting brackets and advanced to the semi-finals to lose to Eastern, 41-36. In the first and second rounds the Mountaineers defeated Wesleyan 27-26 and Centre 44-3 5 respectively. William Blair and Major Gardner, all-SIAA men in 1934, were given berths on the all-KIAC teams for 1936. Captain Gardner, Earl Wheeler, Lloyd Roberts, and Wilburn Eversole will graduate in June. Blair, Clark, Wright, Adams, H. Gardner, Keith, Mills, and Ray, together with outstanding men from the best freshman team in five years, will be excellent material for Coach Gunkler ' s next mobilization. INTRAMURAL SPORTS SPEEDBALL Fall athletics suffered because of unfavorable weather. The regular schedule of dormi- tory contests in speedball went unplayed. But despite the rain-rotted athletic fields, a large number of students gathered to witness the Hare and Hound Race and the annual College-Academy speedball game which was won by the College. That victory earned numerals for Haddix, Taylor, Hughes, Stewart, McBee, Coman, Trent, Parks, Sutton, Henderson, Sowers, J. Hamilton, Morris, G. Hamilton, Center, Beitz, and Roberts. O I Villi I IMS BASKETBALL The various dormitory basketball teams were enthusiastic in playing their scheduled games. Rivalry ran high among the many corners and ends and floors of all the build- ings. In the final tournament game the Basement Howard five defeated the 3rd Floor Pearsons South quintet to win the school championship. HANDBALL As a finalist in an unusually large handball tournament, Lloyd Roberts defeated Hershal Skaggs three straight games to win the all-schools handball championship. CROSS COUNTRY Varsity and freshman cross country racing was revived after a two-year ' s non- participation program. The Mountaineers, although facing difficulties through un- favorable training weather and a late season start, won two close meets from the Uni- versity of Kentucky. Berea has always produced good distance men; therefore this re- vival of cross country will no doubt be welcomed in the fall of 193 6. Letter awards and numerals went to McDaniel, Stewart, and Ward, varsity men; and to Caudill, Banner, and Clark, freshmen. I TRACK Although the write-up for track must go to press before the season gets into full swing, it can be stated that another K. I. A. C. championship team is hoped for. No regular schedule of meets has been verified, but clashes with the University of Kentucky, Centre, Georgetown, and possibly Louisville are expected, with perhaps a triangular meet on the Berea cinders before the annual state track meet in May. The Mountaineer thinlies began their workouts with the loss of Carter, Byron, and Ezzard from last year ' s squad. Still crushing cinders on the final lap of their four- year drive are five men from Berea ' s 1933 first state champion freshman aggregation: Captain Shag Wheeler, record quarter miler; Monroe Nesbitt, weightman; J. T. Waller, quarter miler and relay man; Vernon McDaniel, miler and two-miler; Albert Stewart, first ranking miler and two-miler. All of these men have been mainstays of the varsity championship teams of the past two years. Walter Wheeler, Arvil Ward, Jack Henderson, Virgil Powell, and Ray Woerth are expected to share in the hostilities of this season. TENNIS The present situation in tennis points toward a state walk-away for the Mountaineers. The team ' s No. 1 man. Major Gardner, has for many years been one of Kentucky ' s leading amateur players. He will be adequately backed by Lloyd Roberts, Henry Gard- ner, John Adams, Lecoq Williams, Tom Conover, Wilburn Eversole, William Blair, and Kelly Keith. Most of these men were letter men last year on a team which was Berea ' s best in several years. They have been outstanding in K. I. A. C. tennis circles and were close contestants against the powerful smashers of the Universities of Kentucky and Cin- cinnati. This year contests with Kentucky, Cincinnati, Centre, Louisville, and Eastern are expected before the K. I. A. C. tourney. M. Gardner, Roberts, Eversole and Conover will complete their college racquet careers this season. V -.-, VARSITY Earl Wheeler Forward John Adams Forward Wilburn Eversole Guard Coach Oscar H. LITERARY SOCIETIES Early in October, the Academy forensics program was inaugurated by a Story- telling Contest, participated in by both men ' s and women ' s societies. Miss Marie Rigsby, representing Aelioian was conceded best story-teller; John Lambert, of Beta Alpha, sec- ond; and Hubert Vaughn, Pi Sigma, and Dean Kincaid, Sigma Tau a tie for third. Luther Chaney, Adelphic, was selected as winner of the Men ' s Declamation, held on November 16. Edmund Durham and Edmund Burgess, both representing Pi Sigma, were awarded second and third places, respectively. The Women ' s Declamation was won by Miss Betty Schumacher, Aelioian. Miss Una Conley, Sororian, and Miss Dorothy Blackburn, Victoria, tied for second place. During the first semester, the first round of debates was completed. The question was Resolved: that capital punishment should be abolished in the United States. At the end of this round Beta Alpha had garnered seven points, Adelphic and Pi Sigma, five each, and Sigma Tau, three. Between semesters the semi-annual election of officers was held. Edmund Durham suc- ceeded W. T. Jackson as president of the Inter-Society Council, the legislative body of all the literary societies. In the first contest of the second semester, Pi Sigma repeated its victories of last year by winning both first and second places in the Men ' s Oratorical Contest. The two win- ners were Jesse Allen, first, and Benton Bilbrey, second. Third place went to D. B. Robertson of Beta Alpha. On the seventh of March the Women ' s Essay Contest was won by Miss Elinor Kun- dert, Victoria. Miss Marie Rigsby, Aelioian, won second place, and Miss Patricia Martin, Lenorian, won third. The most interesting contest of the year, the Public Discussion Contest, modified extemporaneous speaking, initiated the scheme of using four topics instead of one or two as was done in former years. Pi Sigma ' s representative, Ronald Scriven, won first place with his discussion of the Italio-Ethiopian situation. Robert Shepherd, Sigma Tau, was conceded second, while Ernie England, Adelphic, and Lacy Williams, Beta Alpha, were conceded third. At this writing the girls have yet three contests to complete, and the boys have two. Both the boys and girls will enter the After-Dinner Speaking Contest, and the boys will complete another round of debating. The girls will participate in a round of poetry- reading and a contest in dramatic dialogue. At present the point rating for the girls ' societies is as follows: Aelioian, 13; Victoria, 7; Sororian, 2; Lenorian, 1. In the boys ' societies the lead is more firmly estab- lished Pi Sigma, 22.5; Beta Alpha, 11.5; Adelphic 10.5, and Sigma Tau, 6.5. Dr. Elisabeth Peck, adviser of all the literary societies, is largely responsible for the success of the Academy literary program. Her unceasing efforts have given the Academy students interesting and helpful programs. All the officers of the various societies, and the participants in the various contests, also deserve commendation. r o ft tjfeAa9 INTER-SOCIETY COUNCILS MEN ' S INTER- SOCIETY COUNCIL Odem Baker Cecil Dause Herschell Maggard Edmund Durham (President) 2nd Semester V. ATHLETICS The 1935-36 basketball season was the most successful in years for the Academy Lions. With only two starters remaining from last year ' s team, Coach Jerry Hughes molded from his new material a formidable machine which won nine games and lost only four. The season ' s opener on January 8 was easy picking for the Lions. Coach Hughes ' boys defeated Forrest Wyatt ' s Tyner High School quintet, 33-10. In the next game the power- ful Hazel Green team bested the Red and Green 3 3-2 0. In the first home game the Academy trounced Tyner again, 30-13. The following week, in a two-period overtime game, the Lions lost a thrilling battle to Berea High School, 29-27. The next game, a week later, was another thriller, but it added another loss to the Lion slate. Hazel Green was victorious, 31-28. The Academy won its last regular game of the season by defeating Berea High School, 37-16. Then on March 5, 6, and 7 the Lions played four successful games to win the 44th District Tournament, held at Richmond. The opponents fell by the following scores: Madison High, 23-20; Speedwell, 49-13; Berea High, 18-16; Waco, 31-8. The following week the Academy again invaded Richmond to participate in the 11th Regional Tournament and came away with the consolation trophy. Conceded little chance to win, the Lions drubbed the favored Lawrenceburg five, 29-20, in the first round. But in the semi-finals, Henry Clay stopped the Academy 22-20 in an overtime period. Entering the consolation game against a team which had held Midway, Regional cham- pion, to a three-point advantage in two overtime frames, the Lions trampled the Great Crossing quintet by the score of 49-27. Frank Lavernia, diminutive Cuban and co- captain of the Lions, was given a berth on the all-regional team. Via the graduation route, the Academy loses this year co-captains Frank Lavernia, Frederick McAfee, and Edmund Durham as well as Anderson Combs and Burton Clark. Through technical ruling, Roy Brown Arney and Robert Hitchcock will not be eligible for play next year. Thus the Academy closes a splendid season played by a splendid squad of men and coached by a splendid mentor. J.s. ins. czbanooLnc This is the schoolhouse where the wildblood boys Come in for taming — take up stranger joys; This ground where children come and go away And send their own blood children back someday. This is the teacher ' s desk — this blackoak table, And same old stick to use when he is able — This same old school beneath the sturdy trees; Wild flags outside to catch the bumblebees; The ground worn bare for marbles and the top; The bent woodgrass where boys turn flip-flop — Better this old house where the creepers run So lizard-like a sleeping in the sun — Better than fazzle houses made of bricks So far away from all us country hicks, Away, away, where there is too much noise And too much puppy in the girls and boys. This old house knows the autumn sun and freeze, Stands under green and under leafless trees. This is the schoolhouse under the oak grove Where we did come to learn and fight and love. This is the school house and the songs I ' ve heard Will keep on drifting like songs of a bird — Just in my heart and out and in again Like sweet soft music of the violin. still can hear them calling Old Black Joe Down in the cornfield where he horsewceds grow. And I can hear the water sweet and low And I can hear Burin ' murmuring Afton flow. The books are silent now: the autumn leaf Blows past the window with the sound of grief. The sunlit fields and the wide windy skies Dance with the dead leaves to the wildbird cries. The wild bird songs are sweet as I have heard In all my life come from a mortal bird. Way down upon the Sewanec River ' s song Played on a jewsharp by old Freddie Long. He ' s dead I thought: been dead a score of years. It takes me back: somehow, I shed some tears. Yes, Nellie Was a Lady — ah, you bet The wind is playing on the grass tabret. This is the schoolhouse under the same sky Where autumn birds fly over, call and cry. The books are silent and the heart goes out To boys and girls and we are ghosts about We have come back again to sing and play, We have come back to give our youth away — We have been scattered to the world ' s far ends; We ' ve worked and lived, loved and made newer friends We now return: the ghosts of yesterday And greet each other in the same old way. The books are silent and the heart goes out To ghosts of dead leaves in the wind about. This ghost of me could cry: this ghost could shout To see the ghosts of them, long-gone, about. — Jesse Stuart ADVERTISING ; Best Wishes For The Class of 1936 DAVIDSON DUOS. TO.
