ITHE CKi! IN MEMORIAM cloyd n. McAllister On October 31, 1933, Cloyd N. McAllister died. But Cloyd N. McAllister ' s spirit is not dead; it lives on. It lives on in the lives of teachers once his students in the Normal School which he so ably headed as Dean for eighteen years; it lives on in the men and women so fortu- nate as to have studied under him as he directed the College Department of Psychology through subsequent years; it lives on in the improved legislation for education effected in Kentucky through his efforts. Born at St. Joseph, Mo., on December 18, 1870, this man proceeded through his ele- mentary education, entered and graduated from Yale, receiving his A.B. in 1892 and his Ph.D. in 1900. He was immediately made Instructor of Psychology at Yale following his Doctor ' s work and held this position until 1906. Then for six years he taught Psychology at the Missouri State Normal School. Dean Mac as the students never ceased to affectionately call him was an active member in the following organizations and fraternities: Sigma Xi, Pi Gamma Mu, American Men of Science, American Psychological Association, American Association for the Development of Science. At his death he was President of the Kentucky Acad- emy of Science. This man viewed life whole in all its relationships. As a counsellor both to students and to teachers, he will ever be remembered for a firmness which was never lacking in sweetness; for a wisdom which was too calm to be troubled by storms of prejudice,

THE CHIMES THE COLLEGE— THE ACADEMIC LIFE T. A. Hendricks, Dean The academic life of Berea makes a com- plementary contrast to her labor life. Reach- ing in with all its depth and richness is the culture of the ages in art and music and philosophy and literature. The student steps from the workshop into the classroom and the library to live with the great spirits of the past and present. The gentility of culture, the astuteness of laboratory technique, the broad vision of the social sciences rounds out the worker and makes of him a whole man. T. A. Hendricks as Dean of college men and women has upheld the standard of the academic life in a most admirable manner. With his quiet toleration of individual con- victions, with his own firm personal beliefs, his keen-edged Southern wit, he has won the love and respect of the college youth whom he counsels. THE LABOR SYSTEM A. G. Weidler, Dean The labor system of Berea has a three-fold purpose. It is teacher, trainer, and financier. In this system the student may not only earn part of his expenses, but he may learn to apply in actual practice the scientific and cultural facts which his academic studies give him. More than this, the system serves to orient the student for his most appropriate life vocation and to train him daily in it. The figure representing this intricate or- ganization is Dr. Albert Greer Weidler, Dean of Labor. With his sound economic ability he has built the structure until it is virtually self-sustaining. Wage scales, hour scales, working conditions, cataloging sys- tems — all have passed under his guiding hand with a resulting remarkable co-ordi- nation. Dean Weidler ' s constant touch with the outside world of economics translated into terms of the Berea situation has been an invaluable bulwark of the system.
