Hutchins Library of Berea College Berea, Kentucky €x Htbrt mm? ■ ORE WORD As we leave Berea ivc take with us not so much the memory of its physical appear- ance as the consciousness of those unseen forces which have silently but firmly en- twined themselves with our lives. They are those values of the supreme worth of every individual; a personal admiration for the great thinkers of time; a discovery of what vicarious service truly means; and the cling- ing fragrance of those school-day comrade- ships which once were ours. THE rmM«; =— tWe . College Co le srfce bei f, Se-h W class THE CHIMES 1 9 3 4 PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS BEREA COLLEGE Berea, Kentucky EDICATION TO THE LABOR SYSTEM OF BEREA— WHICH HAS ENABLED THE STUDENT TO STEP INTO THE WORLD OF WORK AND MEET IT— NOT AS A STRANGER, BUT AS A FAMILIAR FRIEND— WE, THE CLASS OF 1934, APPRECIATIVELY DEDICATE THIS VOLUME OF THE CHIMES. THE CHIM Bereav l95f 249135 THI PRESIDENT WILLIAM J. HUTCHINS, D.D., LL.D. THE CHIMES THE COLLEGE— THE ACADEMIC LIFE T. A. Hendricks, Dean The academic life of Berea makes a com- plementary contrast to her labor life. Reach- ing in with all its depth and richness is the culture of the ages in art and music and philosophy and literature. The student steps from the workshop into the classroom and the library to live with the great spirits of the past and present. The gentility of culture, the astuteness of laboratory technique, the broad vision of the social sciences rounds out the worker and makes of him a whole man. T. A. Hendricks as Dean of college men and women has upheld the standard of the academic life in a most admirable manner. With his quiet toleration of individual con- victions, with his own firm personal beliefs, his keen-edged Southern wit, he has won the love and respect of the college youth whom he counsels. THE LABOR SYSTEM A. G. Weidler, Dean The labor system of Berea has a three-fold purpose. It is teacher, trainer, and financier. In this system the student may not only earn part of his expenses, but he may learn to apply in actual practice the scientific and cultural facts which his academic studies give him. More than this, the system serves to orient the student for his most appropriate life vocation and to train him daily in it. The figure representing this intricate or- ganization is Dr. Albert Greer Weidler, Dean of Labor. With his sound economic ability he has built the structure until it is virtually self-sustaining. Wage scales, hour scales, working conditions, cataloging sys- tems — all have passed under his guiding hand with a resulting remarkable co-ordi- nation. Dean Weidler ' s constant touch with the outside world of economics translated into terms of the Berea situation has been an invaluable bulwark of the system. ITHE CKi! IN MEMORIAM cloyd n. McAllister On October 31, 1933, Cloyd N. McAllister died. But Cloyd N. McAllister ' s spirit is not dead; it lives on. It lives on in the lives of teachers once his students in the Normal School which he so ably headed as Dean for eighteen years; it lives on in the men and women so fortu- nate as to have studied under him as he directed the College Department of Psychology through subsequent years; it lives on in the improved legislation for education effected in Kentucky through his efforts. Born at St. Joseph, Mo., on December 18, 1870, this man proceeded through his ele- mentary education, entered and graduated from Yale, receiving his A.B. in 1892 and his Ph.D. in 1900. He was immediately made Instructor of Psychology at Yale following his Doctor ' s work and held this position until 1906. Then for six years he taught Psychology at the Missouri State Normal School. Dean Mac as the students never ceased to affectionately call him was an active member in the following organizations and fraternities: Sigma Xi, Pi Gamma Mu, American Men of Science, American Psychological Association, American Association for the Development of Science. At his death he was President of the Kentucky Acad- emy of Science. This man viewed life whole in all its relationships. As a counsellor both to students and to teachers, he will ever be remembered for a firmness which was never lacking in sweetness; for a wisdom which was too calm to be troubled by storms of prejudice, i JOHN W. HELEN McKINSTRY Women ' s Gymnasium WILLIAM H. WALKER After eight years as head of the Department of Philosophy and Bible, William H. Walker retires with all that youthful energy of his seventy years into a private life of continued activity. Doctor Walker was born on March 12, 1864, in Flint, Michigan, the son of a dry- goods merchant. At the age of 19 he entered the University of Michigan. After his graduation there he enrolled in the Andover Theological Seminary. This seminary sent him to Germany Where he studied Philosophy at Strassburg. A linguist as well as a philosopher, this scholar has mastered the six languages of Greek, Hebrew, Latin, German, French, and Arabic. His pastorates have included three churches in Michigan and others in Kansas and Illinois. Colleges served by his teaching arc Beloit, Fargo College, and Northland College at Ashland, Wisconsin. As an author Doctor Walker has distinguished himself by writing two books: Five Minutes With Boys and Girls Congregation and What Shall We Think of Jesus? , the latter yet unpublished. The professor holds membership in Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Beta Kappa. He has received degrees as follows: Ph.D., Strassburg, Germany; D.D., Fargo; D.D., Chicago Theological Seminary. Never will the student who has learned to know and admire this man ever forget the meaning of a dynamic personal conviction of moral principle. With this conviction he has struck courage into the heart of the craven soul and admiring awe into the spineless liberal. His scholarly thoroughness, his artistic grasp of the aesthetic, his un- flagging sense of humor, have made him a philosopher beloved by his disciples. Doctor Walker, we can say no more than this: We wish for you a life which shall continue in the future to be as worthy and impressive as it has in the past. President WILLIAM J. BAIRD CARL G. Students in the club get such experience in acting, directing, producing, and general stage manage- ment as will be most practical for their work in the schools and communities into which they go after graduation. This year the club planned, as usual, two major plays. She Stoops To Conquer was the fall play. It gave roles to a large number of new, relatively inexperienced stu- dents, and as one critic said, It was far above the mediocre. Three one-act plays were given as the spring production: Dispatch Goes Home, Toy Heart, and Gringoire. The three plays were brilliant in their variety, their range of characters and were quite successfully given. Other plays given were: At Valley Forge, one of Doctor Raine ' s one-act plays, which was given as the Washington play; a Bible play, A Friend At Midnight, also one of Doctor Raine ' s, was given in chapel the first semester. Tuesday night plays have given projects to many apprentice members. SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER HE hHHmnBBbh AT VALLEY FORGE ALPHA PSI OMEGA Alpha Psi Omega is a national honorary dramatic fraternity. Alpha Iota is our Berea Chapter. To become a member one must have twenty points which must be in acting, directing, costuming, make-up, and general producing. This year nine new members have been initiated. Delivered From The Lion ' s Mouth, a one act biblical play written by Doctor Raine, was given by the Alpha Iota cast in Sunday evening chapel. The costumes were ex- ceedingly well done. ALPHA PSI OMEGA Verda Miller J. W. Evans Coach Gunkler VARSITY BASKETBALL THE MOUNTAINEERS The Mountaineers for the season of 193 3-34 made a record that Kentucky colleges, and for that matter, any member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association will do well to equal in the years to come. At the end of the regular season, the Gunklermen had lost only one game, were leading the K.I.A.C, and tied for the lead of the entire S.I. A. A. The Kentucky tournament ended in the first round as far as Berea was concerned, but in the general S.I. A. A. tournament held at Jackson, Miss., March 2- 6, the boys in the blue and white won three straight games, losing in the finals by two points, but piling up the amazing total of 193 points in the four games and placing all five first string men on one of the two all-S.I.A.A. teams. Not only did they make this unusually good showing, but Coach Gunkler and the boys repeatedly received the high- est praise for their good sportsmanship and clean playing. The outstanding Berea scorers both for the season and the Jackson tournament, were Briscoe Evans, center, and Sam Campbell, forward, each of whom made the all-S.I.A.A. in his position. Evans played his last year for the Blue and White, after appearing in Berea uniforms for many years, both on Academy and College teams. Sam, or Burr- head as he is known on the campus, has one more year on the hardwood for Berea, dur- ing which he will act as captain. He was elected to hold that honor at the annual ban- quet held April 17. Of the other three first stringers, Clarence Red Sharpton, all-state guard of 1932, was perhaps one of the most widely known and feared by the opposition. Red was always present to snag a rebound or a careless pass. William Blair and Major Gardner, the two sophomores filling out the quintet, were very spectacular, yet steady. Blair missed the first all-S.I.A.A. team in the guard position by chance, when a toss-up was necessary after a tie in the voting occurred among the coaches. However, Sharpton, Blair and Gardner all placed on the second all-S.I.A.A. team; Sharpton and Blair as guards, and Gardner as forward. HE CHIMES S. Campbell Sharpton A short review of each game is all that space will allow here. The first was the usual annual homecoming game with the Alumni. Charley Morgan ' s cohorts offered very little competition, so the Mountaineers chalked up number one with a 3 3-23 score. The next joust was with Wilson Evans ' Cumberland College quintet. Despite the experience of the Blue and White, Briscoe ' s big brother put a most stubborn team on the floor for the Bereans to down. This they finally did to the tune of 54-30. With these two games safely in the bag. Coach Gunkler sent the boys against their first S.I. A. A. opponent — Centre. Berea won easily 48-2 5. The fourth win, chalked on the credit side of the ledger at the expense of Morehead Teachers, was a tough one; forcing Berea into an overtime to win 37-36. The next victory — over Western — was also a tough assignment, the Mountaineers winning 33-30, after trailing at the half 19-11. School spirit plus at this one! The Saturday following the team visited Winchester to allow Wesleyan 27 points as con- solation in losing to the K.I.A.C. leaders by a 39-27 count. Two nights later, on the home floor in the Seabury Gym, Bcrea ' s reputation was upheld with the seventh straight victory over Murray 28-23. Then that lone defeat at Richmond. Too much confidence. Result: Eastern 27, Berea 2 5. Nuff said! Coming back strong three days later, Wesleyan was wrecked 46- 11 with every sub playing. Louisville, the next victim, was dropped by a 26-21 count for the ninth success of the season. Sweet revenge — Berea 2 5, Eastern 17, and did the long ridge shake with the celebra- tion! Nothing like it — once in a lifetime a thrill like that. The K.I.A.C. lead was cinched when Georgetown succumbed to the experts from the hills by a ten point deficit at 42-32. The season ended with another win, when Union was beaten 37-31, for the twelfth victory in thirteen starts. VARSITY TRACK The Chimes went to press this year before the completion of the 1934 track season; therefore, this report is incomplete. Our team was weakened somewhat by the absence of Wyatt, Bennett, and Dyar (1933 graduates) but it was adequately re-enforced by the influx of Sophomores from the 1933 State Champion Frosh outfit. On our schedule for this spring were only four meets: dual with the University of Kentucky at Lexington, April 1, score, 80-51 in U. of K. ' s favor; triangular with Centre and Eastern at Danville, May 4, score, Berea 70J 2, Centre 64, and Eastern l ' z; College Field Day, May 9; State Track and Field Meet at Berea, May 21. In both meets in which we have already participated our success depended largely on the men who ran the track events. We are still weak in the field events. Already this spring we have improved over our 193 3 records in every running event from the 220 to the two-miles inclusive. Old Berea records have been smashed: the 440 by Earl Wheeler (:51.6), the mile by Ted Carter (4:33), and the two-miles by Albert Stewart (10:11.1). Our captain, Briscoe Evans, has made good time in the 440, the 220, the 100, and the hurdles. In the State Meet, which will be held on our improved 440 track this year, we stand an excellent chance to win the championship cup. That should be relatively easy, if the other teams split the field event points. The Frosh showing has been commendable considering the size of the squad and the strong opposition which they have faced. But they lost by honorable margins to both the University of Kentucky and the Centre Frosh. THE CHIMES R. Byron, Flowers, Gardner, McCall, Roberts, Burkhard, Blair, Baird. TENNIS This year ' s team is composed of new men altogether except McCall who was a letter man last year. When the call came for the spring practice so many good men turned out that it was almost impossible to select the team, and rank the players in the order that was fair to all. Gardner and Roberts, who have played good tennis in the past, seemed to be superior to the others, and they received the first and second places respectively. The other four players are almost of the same calibre, and it doesn ' t make much differ- ence what position they play in. The team as it now lines up is, Gardner, Roberts, McCall, Flowers, Blair, and Byron. There are two other men, Burkhard and Baird, who play good tennis and are always ready to step in, if they are needed. The first match of the season was against the University of Cincinnati, who brought down a fast and accurate team, carrying away all nine of the matches. The next match was with Centre, where the play was called on account of darkness, when the score stood four to one in favor of Centre netsters who seemed to be able to cope points on the rather dusty clay courts. In the third match of the season the University of Ken- tucky barely nosed us out to the tune of five to four, after a hard-fought and well- played match. We were sorry that we couldn ' t beat them, but will try again next year. Cumberland fell before us, 8 matches to one, and Eastern, our neighbors, bowed to us 6 matches to 3. With the State tennis match to be played here in Berea on the 21st of May, we are trying to whip the team into a championship affair. Then, too, there are two more matches, a return one with Centre, and another tilt with Eastern. Flowers is the only Senior on the team, and as there are several fine prospects among the Freshmen, we hope to have the best team of our history next year and one that will prove to the other teams of the state that the Mountaineers are still on the alert. fHE CHIMES GYMNASIUM INSTRUCTORS Quimby, director, Hibbits, Evans, Sharpton, Davis, Roberts, Jackson, Wheeler, Damron, White, Carter, Barton, Gunkler, assistant director. The line-up for Academy was, front line: C. Combs, D. Combs, Nantz, Brown, Hyden; second line: Cardwell, Bailey, Fowler; third line: Gibson, Gilbert; goal guard, Hurley. The College men were: W. Wheeler, Deyton, P. Combs, Parsons, McBee, Zeller, H. Hale, Davis, Aitken, A. Hale, and Flowers. Henderson, Carter, Jackson, and Hibbits were subs. In the clash of College dormitory team and College outside dormitory team the How- ard Hall boys were vanquished by the outsiders 21-17. The Outside Dorm team: M. Combs, Campbell, Stewart, Deyton, Sharpton, Evans, Elam, Masterson, Jackson, and Colvard. Baseball Baseball has had a most successful season. For the first time in four years the College Varsity, under direction of Rev. Seth Huntington, broke the Academy jinx by win- ning the baseball championship. The Varsity will be intact next year with the exception of Hilton, flashy short stop, Norsworthy, fast left-fielder, and Edney, Varsity Manager, who will be lost by grad- uation. Herr Pauck ' s Freshman Squad provided the season ' s thriller by handing the strong Academy team a 12-8 defeat. This is the first victory in years of a Freshman baseball team over an Academy Nine. fHE CHIMI ■THE CHIMES W. A. A. BOARD Ann Elliott, Outing; Edna Cole, Secretary; Ethel Campbell, Hockey; K. THE CHIME! ■ HE CHIMES ALUMNI AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 1934 May, 7, 1934 Berea, Kentucky Dear Friends: Just a year ago I was autographing this page of the Chimes for 193 3. Like an after- dinner voice which can be started and left alone, my old more or less faithful Sheaffer could be started on Sincerely yours, Cbas. T. Morgan, and I could go right on talking with no thought or attention to the process. But one day something prompted me to leave my desk and visit the Library for the sole purpose of seeing what Mr. Webster had to say about this word sincerely which I had been writing over and over again. I liked what I found so much that now I am completely captivated by the word. It has a new meaning for me, and I prefer it above all others in the closing of my letters. The experiences of the years — -though I am not yet fat and forty — have taught me a few things; one of which is the value of clothing that which we do in the cloak of sincerity. While I might speak to you in this letter as only another prophet of gloom, I will not, for I believe that now — even now, May 1934 — you are entering the proverb- ial dark and cold world only if you make it so. If you have a sincere motive to do good you will do good. If you have a plan for a better order, someone will listen to you. I have the boldness to state here and now that not once in eleven years out of college have I failed to find a warm response to every sincere effort I have made for what I- believed with all my heart to be a good cause. I am not saying that all you have to do is to conceive a good idea, and let it of its own volition grow into reality. It won ' t. Any of your projects which succeed will have to be nursed along and sustained by sincere effort. Your Alma Mater is what it is today because men and women have sincerely worn themselves out at their job. Re- move from Berea College all the sincere effort, all the struggle, all the anxiety, and you will be looking elsewhere for a college for your sons and daughters. In just a month you will be graduated. Then, if you do not guard yourselves with the effectiveness of a Roman soldier at his assignment, you will either be stampeded into entanglements from which all the angels of heaven cannot extricate you, or on the other hand you will by the road of spineless inertia sleep the sleep of the what ' s-the- use-ers. Surely I can wish nothing better for you than to hope that you may adjust your- selves to the waiting world only to the extent that you may work effectively for its improvement; that calmness and sincerity may clothe your actions from the day you leave these halls of learning until your death; that you may graciously and gracefully decline such offerings of custom or society which make wooden heads of the brains which your Alma Mater has pronounced of college caliber; and that you may forever under all circumstances keep your balance in the midst of the combined forces which tend to deter the promises of a Better Kingdom. The time will come when you will yearn for a sustaining arm to lean upon. To this end, without extravagant sentimentalism, it behooves you to sincerely sustain that which you have through the years established — a cordial relationship with the Old College. J. N. PECK THE CHIMES LITERARY SOCIETIES This year of 1933-34 was marked by unexcelled competition which created in the men ' s societies, a close race for the plaque, and in the women ' s societies a remarkable rally by one of the groups. In the first contest of the year, the joint Story Telling Contest, Roslie Mullins of Victoria won first place; second place was given John Fenn of Pi Sigma, while third went to Robert Thornhill of Beta Alpha. This was followed by two contests, the men ' s and the women ' s declamation contests. In the men ' s, Herman Maggard of Adelphic won first place, James Durham of Pi Sigma second and Walter Franklin of Adelphic captured third honors. In the women ' s, Mary Ruth Logan of Lenorian and Gladys Bailey of Victoria tied for first position, and third went to Georgia Belle Smith. In the debate series, Beta Alpha and Pi Sigma, won nine out of a possible twelve debates. The debates allowed twenty-four different men to express themselves in debate on each debate night. The next contest, Oration, was also won by Herman Maggard of Adelphic; John Fenn of Pi Sigma gained second while John Castle of Pi Sigma placed third. The Essay Contest, probably the closest of the women ' s contests was taken by Jane Stafford of Lenorian; Mildred Gorman of Aelioian won second and Gertrude Martin of Victoria placed third. Lenorian literary society staged a rally in the reading contest which clinched the cup for that society, passing Victoria. Robert Thornhill brought Beta Alpha up in the race by taking first in the Public Discussion tussle. Herman Maggard, high point winner from Adelphic, was given second, and Walter Franklin, also of Adelphic took third. Horace P. Will Rogers McSwain nearly won the plaque for Beta Alpha in the final After Dinner Speaking Contest but fell a few points short as Pearl Hyden of Adelphic won second place. Dorothy McCollum of Lenorian won third . Lenorian this year retains the Cup as a result of piling up the highest number of points among the women ' s societies. The final standing of the women ' s societies was as follows: Lenorian 19; Victoria 11; Aelioian 7; and Sororian 4. The final standing of the men ' s societies was Adelphic 26; Beta Alpha 25; Pi Sigma 24 and Sigma Tau, 0. Because of this year ' s victory, Adelphic will retain permanent possession of the coveted trophy. Mrs. Peck, society sponsor, deserves much commendation for her untiring efforts in her support of the various societies. This year the Inter-Society Council (especially the men ' s) has become very influ- ential. Besides sponsoring various chapel programs and society week, the council studied programs and provided different get-togethers for society workers. The men ' s Council also adopted two resolutions, one which provided for a men ' s council secretary, and the other provided for the adoption of the secret ballot for inter- society chapel contests. This year the council was headed by Robert Thornhill, president, first semester; James Durham, president, second semester; and Herman Maggard, secre- tary, second semester. It is hoped that society interest will not be subdued in the future but that society interest will be as keen as it was in the past year. THE CHIMES ACADEMY MEN ' S ATHLETICS BASKETBALL: Facing the cage season the Lions found themselves severely handi- capped by the loss of last year ' s first string forwards due to ineligibility. This took away a great share of the Red and Green ' s scoring ability and consequently the team suffered greatly. Although losing four of the six games scheduled with outside schools and losing in the first round of the District tournament at Richmond to Annville, the Lions gave a good account of themselves in every game and certainly did not lose due to lack of trying. However this unsuccessful season was made up for in a great part by the winning of the inter-school championship by the Academy. Both the Freshman and Junior High teams were defeated twice to leave the Lions with a perfect record. So after all the team has plenty to be proud of and it certainly deserves credit for the showing it made con- sidering the difficulties it had to face. BASEBALL: Weakened by the loss of some of the key men of last year ' s champion- ship nine, the team is now in a second-place tie with the Freshmen, and is improving steadily as the season goes along. When some of the rather inexperienced men on the squad gain this valuable asset the Academy will have a team to be proud of. TRACK: With the mainstays of last year ' s track squad back the team is looking for- ward to a highly successful season. Already having defeated Berea High by an over- whelming score, the Lion tracksters are pointing for the State meet at Lexington with high hopes of bringing home some group honors as well as individual honors. TENNIS: Academy is represented this year by a strong squad of netters. They have already won two matches, one with Madison High of Richmond and the other with the Freshman. The remnants of last year ' s team have been reinforced by some good new material and although weakened immeasurably by the loss of the No. 1 man in the middle of the season the prospects are bright. SWIMMING: With a team especially strong in the dives and dashes the Academy splashers are enjoying a moderately successful season, having defeated the Varsity, tied Junior High, and lost to Freshmen and Junior High. However these losses are no re- flection on the team ' s ability because of the classy type of swimming being shown by all the teams this year. DORMITORY SPORTS With interest running high in the pet fall sport of Berea, speedball, the Academy dormitory championship was won by the 2nd Floor Putnam team, and a picked squad from all the dormitory teams trimmed the College team to take the inter-school title. A strong Prospect Cottage team captured the dormitory basketball title but lost to the College dormitory champions by a close score. A marked increase in interest was shown this year in the basketball games which certainly looks good for the future. At the time of this writing dormitory baseball is just getting under way and with some good teams participating a hot fight is expected for the championship. A tournament is at present being run in connection with the Academy Tennis Club to determine the Academy champion and a consolation tourney will give the losers a chance to show their stuff. Because of the interest shown in this year ' s tennis and the enthusiasm shown by many up and coming young players the tennis future of the Academy looks very bright. There has been an increased number of new members over last year and a great many of the old members have come out again. SOCCER: Although the game with the Junior High was a tie we played a better game than in previous seasons due to a greater interest in the sport this year and a greater number of participants. BASKETBALL: Some excellent basketball was played by the girls this season. Every game in the tour- nament was very fast and close. There was more interest from the student body as evidenced by the organized cheering groups and packed audiences. BASEBALL: The fielders are getting some cross country training running after balls that are batted to Silver Creek. We are counting on several home runs in the games that are coming with the College and Junior High. THE CHIMES FIELD AND TRACK: We have added the throwing of the discus and the javelin in our field events this year. We are not as yet expecting to break any records bu t we hope to make a creditable perform- ance in our meet next week. ARCHERY: This is one of our most exclusive sports it seems, judging from the few who come out. This small group, however, are proficient archers. SWIMMING: There are several Red Cross Life Savers in our ranks. The manager has been looking for more material but with many it means sacrificing the curls to the waves. TENNIS: As this goes to press the second round of the Racquet Club tournament is being played. If this beautiful weather continues the tournament should be over in time for our winner to meet the winner of the College tournament. HIKING: Les Grand Tours have been organized by the manager throughout the year and there have been many girls who have taken advantage of these most economical and healthful tours of fun and pleasure.
