Come let us show honor through a book, That we with an Echo may send To those who wish to know the life and look Of Our Mutual Friend. So we hope this Echo always to resound, That day after day, year after year, may we give or lend It to the friends of the community around, For its words are the deeds of Qur Mutual Friend. As we launched forth in this untried venture we tossed about on unknown seas but have at last reached the harbor in our first voyage. .-Xlthough we have sailed over stormy waters and quiet seas we are confident that these trials have added to the height of the crown of our success, XYe knoxv that we are better able to cope with the problems of life. May this tirst voyage, full of our greatest hopes, aspirations, and ideals be the means of echoing and re-echoing' the finer qualities and the higher goals in our voyage of life. THE ECHO 'CLASS HISTORY On the fifth of September, 1921, nine little green-capped Freshmen took their seats in the assembly of llentonville High School. Six of us from Ben- tonville Common School were joined by three from Cummins' Corner School, During this school year we lost two members from our class, Edna lxlein and Thelma .-Xbercrombie. These future Seniors chose as president of their class, Maurice Jackson. The other members of the High School believed the fledgling class ready to underg'o the last ceremony of initiation before becoming' an accredited member of B. H. S. The punishments undergone at the home of, now Mrs. XValter Rowe, formerly Hiss llelen lxeninier, have been long' remeinbe1'ed. In O1'KlG1' to sta1't the new yeai' right we gave a watch party at the home of Garnet Myers, entertaining' the upperclassmen. XYe studied hard and all were listed in the Hall of Fame for that year. Klrs. Freeman was our sponsor flllfillg this critical period for the lligh School pupil. Although we had welcomed the close of school we gladly returned once more to school, leaving' behind our frivolous Freshmen days. We were now wise Sophomo1'es. F1'ances llackleman was elected as president and Miss Robinson chosen as sponso1'. XYe took up the grand and glorious Caesars Gallic XYar which we devoured as fast as the assignments were made. Geom- etry never caused us a moment's worry nor a sleepless night. During the last half of this term we were joined by Raymond Evans from llvestfield. This made a total of eig'ht in our class. Gn February the fourteenth the other High School members were entertained at a delightful Valentine party. This year we left, expecting' a new building' to come back to. in the fall of '23. i XYhen school opened the new building was still incomplete. It almost seemed as if the days of the district school were back again, to be in the old one-room building heated by stoves-The ljentonville Town Hall. At Thanks- giving we moved into our delightful new assembly. At the beginning' of this year we were joined by Leroy Cummins and Nkayne Groves, two juniors from Fairview High School. Frances Hackleman was re-elected as president and Miss Robinson was again chosen as our sponsor. Our big problem throughout the year was finance. The close of school meant the Junior-Senior reception which we hoped to make a success. After much planning and days and night of hard work the eventful night of May l-l-th came. We hope the Seniors enjoyed the evening as much as the -luniors. This year we lost one of the faithful members of the class, Earl Vvalters, who moved away. lYe were crippled ve1'y much without his help. lYe a1'e now nearing the end of the road which leads us to the last days of High School. The Senior class as their last chance of presenting a play. gave Thats One Un Bill. lYith much difficulty the class was duly organ- ized. The debates that took place at this meeting rivaled those of Clay, Cal- houn. and TVebster. Excess work has been imposed upon the Senior class, especially by the History and English teachers. lf we survive a term essay in History and a play as a term report in English we may receive the coveted sheepskin. -GLENN HEBBELL. First there came a little fellow, Mer- rell XYalker by name, full of pep and energy and with lots of fame. Raymond XVissler came second with angel wings, not knowing the meanness and faults of girls. There was Roy Hutzelman, a boy of high ideals but lost them after the first day. lYilliam Collier came forth with bright blue eyes and kinky ears. Roy Newbould was there with a very large head and plenty of feet. Last, but not least. was a very fair maiden with wonderful cheeks. She blessed the Freshman Class by a beautiful name which was Garnet Cummins. The honorable six were very wise. attempting nothing that was very hard, but always accomplishing the task begun. Latin was our favorite sport except on test day when all our books were put on the honor roll, save a few pages of the vocabulary that slipped in our desks for future reference if desired. Thanks to our classmate, XYilliam Collier, who happened to learn about twelve and one-half per cent of his vocabulary and so we all made the same grade in Latin on the final exam. through his efforts. XYith many a hardship and several hard knocks we survived the first term's sentence at the Township jail. The following year found all six of us before judge Stafford, who was to give us our sentence for the coming term. XYe pleaded with him to let us take Caesar. He was very sorry that we chose such a poor subject, but since we were anxious to take it he let us have our desires. XYe behaved very nicely until after the interclass tournament, which we won, when Raymond VVissler relieved himself of school life and retired with his parents two miles east of Bentonville. This was a shock to the whole class. He had been the class radio, keeping every one of us in good spirits and now the joke had to fall to some one else. iYith more good traits than faults we. the five that survived. left thc Township jail with higher ideals, greater desires. and above all an ever- lasting friendship with our schoolmates. One bright September morn in the year nineteen hundred twenty-three. three of the now disdained Sophomore Class entered Bentonville High School once more. Vie had left all our frivolous underclass ways there and entered upon the dignified role of upper classmen. Among these was Garnet Cum- mins, the dignified school girl, who never powders, only when necessary. One of her qualities of the lunior year is her abilitv to vamp a hack-driver. Rov Newbould, the sheik of the school, has gleaming black eyes, black hair and fair complexion. The one thing that spoils Rov's vamning methods is his small feet. Rov holds an interest in the Senior Class. 'XYilliam Collier has a long nose, witch brown hair, and a very great interest in underclass girls. especially the Sophomore Class. ' After the first semester we were joined bv Earl XYalters. a red headed boy, with very few freckles, also with a three-decker brain. He has won the hearts of the -lunior Class so that he is now our gold brick. The Junior Class of '25 expect to crown their success as .luniors with the Junior-Senior Recep- tion. Hur teacher was Miss limma Sutton. She helped us over many hard places and was very patient with us although we are afraid her patience was sorely tried at times. She continued as our teacher until our fourth term of school. At this time we were out of Room one and under the instruction uf Miss Cora Kellam, who taught us for two years. Five members mf our present class, Donald Klason, Robert Hanlove, john Smiley. and Leatha Blue, had been together from the first, but in February of our fourth year l.eatha lllue moved away and the next year Margaret XYilliams joined us. ln the sixth grade our teacher was Miss Grace Carson. ln the latter part of the year l.eatha came back and we live members have stayed together since then, although we were joined by other members who have come and gone throughout our school years. ' ln our seventh year, we were in Room three, which was upstairs. Mrs. Nettie Freeman was our teacher. During this year we completed our work in geography and physiology. All of us received very commendable grades. The next year XYilbur Xkvoutl joined us and in February Frances XYilson began school here. Margaret XYllllZl.lllS withdrew from school in the latter part of the term. All of us were working hard for our final examinations. Wie passed these successfully, due to the faithful efforts of Mrs. Freeman. We agree that those exams. sounded worse than they really were, even though they were not altogether easy. The author received an average of ninety-six per cent which was the highest average of the eighth grade pupils of the county. We were delayed two weeks in our Freshman year due to the fact that our new high school building was not completed. The first three weeks of the term were spent in the town hall. During the third week we were initiated by the Sophomores who took their spite for the ,luniors out on us. How- ever, we enjoyed it and felt better after it was over. The name of Freshies still hung over us, but we felt more at home. During this year we made intimate friends with Latin. Algebra and Botanyg having already been friends to English, we remained so. Late in October we gave our first high school party. ln May we enjoyed our first reception and anticipated our reception when we became Seniors. Un the last dav of school we were grieved at giving up our name of Fresh- men. but glad' to become Sophomores. Hur Freshman year was full of stumbling blocks and faults, but to look back over it we are satisfied with the results. Our Sophomore year is now at a close. XVe are once more advanced along life's rugged pathway, one year nearer to our goal, more ready to take our place and do our humble part in making the world a success. As we take the name of juniors we feel that we are deserving of our place and have gained it honestly. -LEATHA BLUE. XXX- were promoted at the beginning of Christmas vacation into the lirst grade. .-Xt the end of the year we were ready for the second grade. Bliss Edith BYeaver led us through the second year's work. Although mischievous. I think we were regarded as a studious class. At the beginning of the third year Bliss Iflvelyn Dora became our teacher. VVe made rapid progress and at the end of that year were ready for the work of the fourth grade, under the direction of Miss Bflarjorie Hunt. VVe still retained our name, a studious class. BYhen we started in the fifth grade. to our great delight, we entered Room II and were taught by Bliss Grace Carson. BYe spent two years under her guidance. School, by this time, was opening up new wonders for us. The work of the seventh and eighth grades was presented by Mrs. Nettie Iireeman. Out of the original number but six remained, namely: Frances Ryman, Iilva Blason, Blarvin BYissler, XYillard Hauhn, Lawrence Rathfon and Yiolet Blcliee. To this number were added: Cioldia Jordan, Ruth Evans, john Gauker, Grace Curtis, Blary Ilraclway, Horace Kellam, Edgar Kearns, Blaurice XYolI, Iilla Stevens, Cloycc Bkood and Iidward Sheets. In spite of hindrances, our class progressed and in Blay, 1924, the entire class of seven- teen graduated from the common school. Un the eighth day of the following September fifteen Freshmen started on their career as high school students. BYe were looked upon, as well we might be, those green Iireshiesf' but in a short time we got in step with the high school. The second week of school the Sophomores initiated us. R A-75.12. na' :dui 1 u I v 1 n'Hg' THE ECHO HISTORY OF POSEY TOWNSHIP llentonville was named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton. a noted states- man of Missouri. NYhy towns in several of the different states were named after him may he explained by his prominence in the Senate as a senator from Klissouri for thirty successive years, beginning in 1821. There he advocated a railroad to the Pacific, and an amendment to the Constitution which would permit the people of the United States to vote directly for President. He bitterly fought in the Oregon dispute. the fifty-four forty advocates, Cal- houn's proslavery propaganda, the compromise measures of Henry Clay, and the rechartering of the United States Bank. Bentonville is located south of the center of Posey Township on the 'l. Bl. K 1. railroad, a branch of the main Pennsylvania line. XYilliam Dickey surveyed and plotted the site of the village. consisting of thirteen lots. for the proprietor, joseph llale. December 7, 1838. A small addition was made in 184-l by Thomas K. Stiles. XYilliam Young, a tailor. built a house on the town site before it was surveyed and doubtless was the first business man on the ground. Among other business men were: Bradley Perry, the neighbor- hood hlacksmithg Samuel Dickey, .loseph McCauley, Wioodford Dale, .-Xlfred l.oder, and Xlioodson. merchants, and NYilliam Stockdale, tanner. The Bentonville Post Office was formerly known as Plum Orchard and was established under this name in 1827 with Moses Ellis as Postmaster. In 1838 the name was changed to Bentonville and Samuel Dickey was the Post- master. The Post Office has been moved from place to place over the town. The first location, as far as could be found, was in a building where XYill Clif- ton's barn now stands. lt has been located where Klr. Clifton's house is to- day: in lilla Knapp's house where l-lenby's now live, with Oliver Swift as Postmaster: in a building which stood about where Glen XYalters now lives. with Henry Hauhn. father of lDeForrest Hauhn, as Postmaster: where John Smullen's house now is: in the store room where Mrs. Mary .lane Hackleman now lives. with Klr. Courtelyou serving as Postmaster: the room joining Xlieavei-'s house, formerly the bank room, with Lige Knapp, brother of Caro- line Knapp. and later l.ena Bridgeman serving: the store of V. D. Chance with he himself serving. and from there it was moved to its present location in lidward Millers grocery store with Mr. Miller as Postmaster. There have been very few places of business in Bentonville, but on in- vestigation we find that there have been various places of interest worth considering. About where XYilliam Clifton's barn now stands Jim Baker used to run a shoe shop and Post Office, and a toll gate near. just across the street where now is Mrs. Rea's barn, Stockdale's had a tannery. There was a saw mill. about forty years ago. which was located just north and across the road from our town hall. This saw mill was run by James Crawford. father of Mrs. Nettie Freeman. Fred Ginrich had a wagon and harness shop about where Lewis Ginrich lives today. There has always been a blacksmith shop here. This was run from 1900 to 1919 by Frank Hackleman, then turned over to 12. llliller and located in the west part of town. ln the little room on the east side of 'XYeaver's house has not only been a little grocery store and Post Ullice, but about seventy years ago there was a millinery shop there. ln its last years Claude Keminer sold candy. cigars. and ice cream there. lt was later made our first bank room after which it was abandoned. On the corner where the bank stands today used to be a grocery store. This was owned by Chas. Thompson and run by Cole, XYeb and others and last by lileharger, under whose management it was burned down in 1898. Page thirty THE ECHO The town l1as never grown in size. Tl1is is probably because there are no factories nor any attractions to draw people l1ere. Today there are two gro- cery stores operated by Vlohn Smullen and Edward Miller, a Post Office. a garage owned by Glen XYalters, and a State Bank. A new bank building was erected in 1921. Churches Quite a large number of tl1e early settlers in l'osey Township were Methodists and it was they who formed tl1e first religious body within the towi1sl1ip. They first met in their homes. Tl1e first church was Il log struc- ture located about one and one half 111iles southwest of Bentonville. l.ater tl1e congregation built a frame house at Bentonville, but this was finally dis- posed of to tl1e township 211111 made i11to a public hall. ln this congregation were tl1e little boys and girls wl1o today are our grandparents and elderly people, so111e of whom still live in the township. lt seems strange that this society was almost broken up wl1e11 tl1e first musical instrument. a melodion, was given to the church. The society no longer exists. The organization of tl1e first Christian church in tl1e county was by .lohn P. Thompson, a Baptist preacher. ln 1323 the teachings of .Xlexander Camp- bell reached l1i111 and he began preaching the 11ew doctrine. Thompson naturally became the moving spirit in tl1e organization of Christian churches. The first Christian church was established at Fayetteville in 1329, followefl by o11e at Connersville in 1333, at Bentonville next in 1336, Fairview i11 1313. l-larrisburg i11 1364. and Alpine in 1393. Tl1e Christian church at Bentonville was organized in 1336 by lilder -lohn O'Kane. .-Xmong the charter members were George Yan Buskirk and wife and Freeman Rlunger and wife. Services were first held ii1 tl1e homes of the members, but in 1340 a building was erected. a frame structure Wlllfll stood south of Bentonville a short distance. This church was of tl1e old fashioned type. The seats faced tl1e pulpit, o11 both sides of wl1ich was a door. The men entered fl'U1l1 their door only and sat on tl1eir side of tl1e church. and the women entered from their door o11ly and sat on their side of tl1e church. The seats faced the pulpit to avoid turning tl1eir heads NYl1Cl1 new people arrived. This building was in use until 1334 wl1e11 tl1e present building was erected at a cost of two thousand five l1undred dollars. Une of the members on tl1e building committee was 'lohn XY. 1-lackleman. The ground of an acre and a l1alf was donated to the church by .lohn Gilleland a11d a cemetery was estab- lished adjoining the church. Schools Tl1e first school house i11 the township was located in tl1e southeast corner of the township. and stood on the corner exactly wl1ere a tenant house of Frank 1. Thomas stands today. Tl1e first teacher in the township was George Klanlove, who taught there in 1313. This George Manlove, from North Caro- lina, settled in this vicinity in 1311 and is tl1e grandfather of Ethel Thornburg .lobe and Hazel Florea. The first school house was of tl1e usual primitive type. lt was made of round logs and l1ad a large fireplace from five to ten feet long in the end op- posite the door. lt had greased paper for windows on which was the copy of tl1e letters of tl1e alphabet and Arabic a11d Roman notation. The boys and girls would sit on log be11cl1es witl1 no backs before a desk usually as rude and recite. There were never more than six school houses in tl1e township. Each school house was known by its number. School house No. 1 was located on the Thornburg place northeast of Bentonville. Some of the teachers wl1o Page thirty-one THE ECHO taught there in later years are: john Flynn, Charles Crawford, Estella Man- love, Mary Manlove, Irvin Harnieier, Marie Harmeier, and last, Sarah Hussey. School house No. 2 was located on what is now Thomas Bradway's farm. Some of the teachers who taught there are: Sadie Hathaway, Charles Free! man and Nettie Freeman. School No. 3 was located on the l.amberson farm in the northwest section of the township. Frank Crawford. liarl Crawford, Ida Hutchinson, Fanny Frtel and Mary lrwin taught there. School No. 4 was always known as the Beeson school house and later as the Cummins Corner school. lt was located in the southwest part of the township. Some of the teachers there were: Charles Crawford, Albert Rea, liva l,amberson, Mr. Moor, Frank Crawford, lid -lordan, Miss Jeffrey, Ber- nice Beeson and Nettie Freeman. Mrs. Freeman taught there the longest by far and was the teacher until it was discontinued. School No. 5 was located about one-half mile south of Bentonville on the farm which is now owned by Frank XYeaver. Sullltf of the people who last taught there were: Hiatt Frost, Thomas Murray, Mrs. Addie Beeson. Grace Yan Buskirk, and Ella Lamberson. In l378 this school was moved to a new building which stood where the one at present stands. Two years of high school was then given. .-Xmong the teachers there were B. F. Theibaub. Fletcher Gray, -lohn Carter and wife, limma Sutton, limma and XYill Ginrich. lfrnest Jeffrey, liarl Crawford, Nettie Crawford. lrvin Harmeier and Mr. Broomfield. School No. 6 was on the farm now owned by Oliver Manlove. Marie Manlove, XYill tiinrich and Emma Sutton taught in this school. All of these schools were built along in the fifties. Our high school. built in lS79, was among the first in the county. These schools over the town- ship were one by one abandoned, No. 5, the Cummins Corner school, being the last to be brought to the one at Bentonville in the year 1920. ln 1912 the old high school building was moved to where it still stands and is now occupied by l.ewis Ginrich. The new building was completed in 1912 during the trusteeship of James Bailey. This high school has grown con- siderably and received its commission in 1923. In the same year this build- ing was remodeled and now is a very modern and up-to-date school with Law- rence Stafford as principal. -FRANCES HACKLEMAN. OUR PLACE OF REFUGE There is that good old school, That school of days gone by, To us a friend, a friend indeed, That school of Bentonville Hi. To you we dedicate, dear friend, Because you're worthy of our praise, As time rolls on. and on, and on, Thoughts are of you and old school days. -RAY MON D EVANS. Page thirty-two Qltbletirs THE ECHO BASKETBALL The crack of the pistol at the Connersville Sectional Tourney ended the career of the Bentonville high school team with a heart-breaking defeat by l,aurel of one point. The day before the squad had taken over Springfield in a fast game played as the opening contest of the tournament. The year 192-1-1925 showed great improvement in the local quintet. At the beginning of the season Maurice Jackson was chosen as our captain. The team had some difficulty in getting started, however they began their victo- rious days by defeating the Connersville Seconds on the latter's floor. This victory put new life into the players, and they were very successful the rest of the season. The team showed good coaching and sportsmanship through- out the year. XYe must not forget the second team and the grades. The second team showed good basketball, having won all their games but one and that was lost on foreign floor. lf this team remains together it will he a real winner. Law- rence Rathfon, as their captain, was a good leader and the squad displayed real basketball. especially on the Connersville floor when they defeated the Junior Spartans by a large score. The grades elected Carl johnson as their captain and this team showed that we are developing good material for the future. Teamwork was a dominant characteristic. Bentonville Invitational Tourney On the twenty-fourth of .lanuary we won our invitational tourney and kept the silver loving cup awarded by the Connersville News-Examiner. XYe had hard sailing throughout the day, but nevertheless at the end came out with three victories. XYe defeated Grange in a hard fought battle, our first game, winning hy a score of 19 to 18. ln the afternoon we met Alquina. This was a fast, clean game, in which we won with a JO to 17 score. In the first minute and a half' we led hy a score ot 10 to O, which gave us a lead our opponents could not overcome. XYe met Everton in the finals. This was a hard fought game because both teams had had a trying schedule. XYhen the final shot was fired we had 77 defeated our rivals by a score of -.. to 17.
