Dear reader, Probably by the time you read this page you will have discovered that this yearbook is constructed differently than those previously published by Benton High School, The Sixth Hour Scarab staff has created the book in this manner for a number of reasons: we wanted to get away from the traditional yearbook; the two-direction book divides the individual pictures from the rest of the yearbook; we wanted this book to be really different from any other Scarab. Creating this year’s Scarab has been an interesting and challenging experience for us working on the Sixth Hour staff. Gaila Brown, Nancy Cybulski, Nancy Eldridge, Melinda Kolisek, and Mr. Messers- mith, our hardworking advisor, worked sixth hours, noon hours, free periods, weekends, and nights to meet the deadlines. I am deeply indebted to all of them for all their work. We were assisted by Tay- lor Publishing Company’s representative, Mr. Chuck Cotton. We are also grateful to Mr. Paul Hickman for his photographic aid. For you the reader and student, we have tried to capture through pictures and words the events of the 1972-73 school year at Benton High School as well as the community and world events which tran- spired during the school year. In essence, the book is a miniature almanac of 1972-73. Now I must close if we are to meet our publication deadline. We truly hope you enjoy the 1973 Scarab of Benton Consolidated High Schoo], Benton, I}linois. Sincerely, Mary Louise Budzak editor
