Uits, oy. be 7 e iy sassey) Contents Nostalgia: We Remember — Overwhelmed by the complexity of contemporary life — and yeaming, perhaps, to escape to a less troubled past — people are looking back to what they regard as more pleasant, peaceful yester- years. The pendulum swings to old memories, old songs, old fads, old styles, old stars. Yesterday's fashions keep showing up for reruns: women with plucked brows are slipping into slinky halters, wedges, and chubby jackets. While men are stepping out in double-breasted suits, two- toned shoes and bow ties. W.C Fields, you must haye noticed is everywhere and everyone is wearing Mickey Mouse watches again. Most school kids remember the good days when they worried about important things like what will Popeye do next and what will happen if Romper Room is cancelled. With a little prompting most teen-agers can remember watching the Beatles making their American debut on the Ed. Sullivan show. Reviewing comics, films and presidential elections, plus television, pop music, and childhood games that unite all Americans, you'll probably have a good start to being nostalgic. By the way, do you remember who Barry Goldwater's running mate was in 1964? the good things Tiny Tim tiptocing through the tulips with uke having his wed-in on national television. Annette Funicello intoning M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E Whatever happened to “Sock it to me,” “I kid you not,” “Would you believe,” and “Sorry ‘bout that?” Captain Kangaroo and his Dancing Bear. Ma and Pa Clark and their boy Kent. Dick Tracy calling. . . Gotham City being protected by Batman and the Boy Wonder. The little fat bear on your T-shirts. Astronauts landing on the moon. The excitement at Woodstock. John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert F. Kennedy are slain. Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray, and Sirhan Sirhan cause an entire nation to ask what is wrong with itself. Three rock giants: Joplin, Hendrix, and Morrison. The Beatles preside at their own funeral in Sergeant Pepper. Walt Disney dies bur lives on in the comic books, Love Story and Romeo and Juliet — nor a dry eye in the house Paul McCartney is reported missing but curns up finally. Peter Duel is reported to be dead. Creating this year’s Scarab has been an interesting and challenging experience for us working on the Sixth Hour staff. Gaila Brown, Nancy Cybulski, Nancy Eldridge, Melinda Kolisek, and Mr. Messers- mith, our hardworking advisor, worked sixth hours, noon hours, free periods, weekends, and nights to meet the deadlines. I am deeply indebted to all of them for all their work. We were assisted by Tay- lor Publishing Company’s representative, Mr. Chuck Cotton. We are also grateful to Mr. Paul Hickman for his photographic aid. For you the reader and student, we have tried to capture through pictures and words the events of the 1972-73 school year at Benton High School as well as the community and world events which tran- spired during the school year. In essence, the book is a miniature almanac of 1972-73. Now I must close if we are to meet our publication deadline. We truly hope you enjoy the 1973 Scarab of Benton Consolidated High Schoo], Benton, I}linois. Sincerely, Mary Louise Budzak editor oa ad SCHOO PE a1) i ’ . = x SCHOOL IS.. She dabbles in art with paints, and enjoys restoring antiques. After retirement she plans to resume her travels. She would like to go back to Europe, on to Hawaii, and possibly to Asia. Mr. Aiken has taught under five principals. Not only Biology but American History, World Geography and Health. He was Fresh- man-Sophomore football and basketball coach during World War II. Each part of the gym was decorated like one of the four seasons. The Homecoming festivi- ties began with an enthusiastic pep session. The 1972-73 queen — Becky Harvey and the attendants — Freshmen: Cindy Lowery and Patti Williams; Sophomores: Ellen Jen- kins and Lynne Davis; Juniors: Brenda Eisenhauer and Ann Woolley; Seniors: Melanie Tabor and Cathy Whitehead were announced. After the pep session, there was a parade from the high school to the square and back to the high school. Then it was announced that the Spanish Club had won first place for its float with F.F.A. taking second place, and F.B.L.A. third. Thanksgiving Day everyone came out to watch the annual Turkey Day game berween rivals — Benton and West Frank- fort. Unfortunately the Rangers were defeated. The band, Get Your Kicks, livened the evening. Students and alumni anxiously awaited the coronation of the queen. At last the moment arrived and each of the attend- ants with escorts proceeded to the stage. After the queen was crowned, the dance slowly came to an end — another memora ble moment in The Time of the Seasons. to. . .the top. . . Straight. . . . And we can’t be stopped. . Sophomore Football 7 Both the Freshman and Sophomore football teams expe- rienced a taste of victory this year. The Freshman team, composed of “greenics” who had never been together on a team before, finished their season with a 6-3 record. Under the coaching of Mr. Oyler and Mr. Webb, these 36 players became one unit all striving toward the same goal. With the promising record of the team in mind, we look forward to their next three years as football players. The Sophomore team, under the coaching of Mr. Hungate and Mr. Phillips, finished their season with a brilliant record of 9-1. This last game was lost to Mount Vernon in a disputed last minute touchdown. These players are developing a sense of team pride and will be a great asset to the Varsity team next year. What You See Is What You Get The Ranger machine, consisting of 2% revenge-seeking Rangers and 2 equally . aggressive coaches, made their debut on | September 15 against Sparta. Proving their . worth, they won this game 26-7. The next game was once again a victory for the Rangers, this time against Metropolis Win. | ning by the score of 30-6, the Rangers headed with enthusiasm into their next game, But the Marion Wildcats proved to be tough and the Rangers lost by the score | of 12-0. Optimism began to rise with the Ranger’s defeat of Chester. Burt it dimin- ished slightly when Herrin squeaked by the Rangers, 15-14. The Rangers Jost their nexr three games to Centralia, Me Vernon, and Carbondale. But despite this, they didn’t give up and on November 10, the Ranger machine rolled over Harrisburg with an impressive score of 48-0, Proving that Ranger spirit never dies, the machine came from behind in the Johnston City game to tie the score 14-14. The Rangers lost the Thanksgiving Day game to rival West Frankfort 32-0. Considering size, injuries, and general bad luck, the Rangers managed a respectable season record of 4-6-1. The Freshman Ranger’s defeat of Eldorado, 80-44, in their first game seemed to set the pattern of victory that continued throughour the next cight games. The Rangers were defeated in their two games against Mt. Vernon and Centralia, but the team recovered from these defeats and continued on their victorious ways, winning their remain ing games. There is a lot of basketball talent in this class and we look forward to their entrance as Sophomore players Starting with a victory against Sparta, the Sophomore Rangers began their season in style. The next game against McLeansboro was another victory for the Rangers. Gaining experience with each game they played, the team continued on in a victorious manner. They lost only two games to Centralia and Meridian. The Rangers had a 12-2 season and finished as co-champions of the South Seven Confer- ence. The Sophomores played steady basketball, handling themselves well in big games, and will be quite an asset next year as Varsity players. 55 56 1972-73 Mighty Basketball Rangers COACH RICH HERRIN JIM ARMEY The 1972-73 Benton Basketball Rangers were a mighty team and had the record to prove it, The yarsicy was composed of six seniors — Dennis Andrews, Robert Com, David Hurley, Chris Moore, Kenny Summers, and Allan Wisely; six juniors — Jim Armey, Paul Dinkins, Steve Genisio, Score Hall, Mark Manis, and Steve McCommons; ane sophomore — Bill Smith, who rounded our the squad, This year the Benton team had tough competition from the South Seven Clubs. The Herrin team defeated the Rangers twice during the regular season; the second game was nip and tuck. The final score was 70-72. One team in the South Seven played stall games — legal in high school play. In their second meeting the Running Rangers effectively broke the Carbondale stall. Benton won by the score of 45-21. This score was consid- erably lower than that of the contest with Harrisburg which the Rangers won by the score of 96-57. Injuries plagued the Running Rangers during the regular season and during the tournament time. Robert Corn was sidelined carly in the basketball season with a broken hand. Illness had an effect on the squad during the winter months, Prior to the start of the spring tournaments, Paul Dinkins injured his ankle; still hampered by the injury, Paul saw limited action in the Herrin Regional. The Benton Rangers are to be commended for their efforts; they were second in conference and were winners of the prestigious Centralia Holiday Tournament. Next year the Rangers with seven returning players wall begin their season in a spacious new gymnasium. In July, ad lists were compiled. With the beginning of school came the beginning of ad soliciting for the sixth hour staff, When the soliciting was completed, the concentrated planning on the yearbook was begun. A ladder was made; the ladder is a large diagram which outlines what will appear on cach page. The first section that was sent to the publishing company in Texas was the ad section which appears in the rear of the book. Also sent in on the first deadline was the club section, Each page in the book had to be designed. A ’ preliminary layout was drawn upon a small layout sheet. Then this layout was transferred to a large rough draft layout sheet. The layout was finally transferred to a quad-pack copy sheet: four copies of the layout were made. The pictures were taken | and the stories were written to form the desired layouts. After our first deadline of 32 pages was met, the staff merchandised the yearbook. In December, the freshman and sophomore class editors completed the work on their respective class sections. Identifying and stamping pictures, preparing layouts, and typ- ing names was done by the class editors. At the same time, the sixth hour staff was working on the opening signature (sixteen pages) of the Scarab. In January, the juniors and seniors worked on and completed the remaining pages of the year- book, Even after the remaining pages of the book were placed in the mail, the work for the staff was far from over. The company sent back pages to be carefully proof read. Subscrip- tion lists had to be checked and rechecked. Selection procedures for the 1974 staff had to be finalized. Plans had to be made for the distribution of the 1973 Scarab. Our world now focuses on new experiences, new surround- ings, and new hopes. Somehow overcoming the ridicule of our upperclassmen, we mas- tered our combinations, and with our handy maps, slowly but surely, we learned our way around the school. Eventually, as our confi- dence grew, we advanced to our destinations without even a glance above the door. Our tensions eased as we began to engage in school activities. We chose our class offi- cers to represent us and somehow to pro- claim our maturity. Our responsibilities will build as we learn to grasp at new surroun ings. Is there anything we all have in common? Nothing, save these four years. Perhaps the single thread connecting 1969 to 1973 has been the two-edged theme of hope and di sappointment. There has been hope for peace in Vietnam, hope for unity during the Olympic games, hope for compromises within our nation. Yet, these hopes were squelched as the hope for peace died time and time again, as the Olympic games ended in brutal massacres, as our differences tore our nation apart. A new pride in our space programs brought America into a shining prominence, but in this year, the program was abruptly cut off. Our community struggled through trials, bad weather, and strikes to complete our new high school by January; however, this hope diminished into the disappointment of waiting until next year. To seniors, the theme has become a reality. We have hopes of new experiences awaiting us after graduation, yet there is the disap- pointment of leaving friends and good times. There is a hope for a bright future, and there is disappointment in goals not yet attained. Now, for the first time, we realize chat life isn’t all one way or another. There is a time for everything and a purpose for everything. With this thought in mind, we dedicate this section to the Class of 1973. Pictured at the left are our class officers, council members, and sponsors: Becky Eisenhauer, treasurer; Ted Stotlar, council member; Melanie Tabor, vice-president; Joe Padavic, council member; Mr Richmond and Mr. Jourdan, sponsors; Mary Jankousky, secretary; Becky Harvey, president; Lex Stewart, council member.
