Thanks go to Mr. Cary Messersmith, our Scarab viser, and to sixth hour staff members Jankousky, senior assistant editor; Brad layout editor; Jeri Robinson, feature editor; Aaron, sports editor; Mary Louise Budzak, copy tor and business manager; and Leanne Mitchfell Robin Pearcy, junior assistant editors. In hours, in midnight get ready for sions, in precanou's (picture taking they've contributed so much. A social thanks goes Hictfflhan, Mj clu hots, — ductory section. We also wish to thd rpole. Paragon Yearbook representative, assistance. Yours truly. Paula Budzak Editor Art is the difference between SEEING. and just identifying. Only people can see the shape of a puddle and the reflections it catches, the hard angles of steel girders against the sky, the light-and-dark of shadows on a stairway, the rhythm of whirling wheels at rush hour. This is art? Almost. This is man shifting gears from the pace of everyday rush for a long look, seeing the pattern, the rhythm of rustling leaves or stark winter branches, of water dripping, of the slinking movement of a cat: This is man taking a long look at the things he needs, at the world rushing by, at war, at hate, at love. Jean Mary Morman art: of Wonder and a World 18 ± . . . the shape of a puddle and the reflections it catches . . . And I live in America and find its face not ugly for a minute ... well, maybe every now and then a minute... Distasteful to me are those creatures and those politicians who propagate peace when they mean peace just for themselves... Those minutes when ugliness runs rampant in my country I would not overlook, but challenge them whenever I've a chance. I find the face of my America beautiful and proud I'd be to help smooth out her wrinkles. And I Live in America Rod McKuen Copywright 1970 20 u Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for spring. We developed our skills in reading music with all those sight singing drills. We became more poised through singing solos, in esem-bles at various civic affairs, and most of all in parts in the spring musical. The Music Man. Some of us even became pretty good directors. Ninety of us warblers had a big year, and we hope the things we learned will help us in lots of ways as we move along life's way. 39 Mr. Gilbreth . . Mrs. Gilbreth . Ernestine .... Frank ........ Ad soliciting started In September; staff members met with Paragon Yearbook personnel in Indianapolis on October 3; the staff took SCARAB subscriptions November 2-6. The first deadline approached—first pages to be sent in were the ads and the introductory section (we sent drafts of our pages along with our photos and stories to Montgomery, Alabama, for printing). Pictures of the classes, “Cheaper by the Dozen , Homecoming, and football were included in the ship- | ment for the second deadline. Next to be mailed were the formal and informal clubs. A picnic in the spring rounded out the year's activities. The cold weather did not distract the dilligent Spanish Club workers building their float. They won First Prize in the Homecoming Parade. December 9. The club visited the planetarium (where the story of the Christmas star was presented), the Museum of Science and Technology (where physics students tried out the working models), and Anheuser-Busch 8rewery (where there were no free samples). During the year, colored animated films were featured at the club meetings. Some titles included Our Friend the Atom'' and About Time. Mardi Gras and Bastille Day celebrations were planned by the French club, which was expanded this year to include students who hope to study French next year. Mrs. Paul L. Whittington, a native speaker of French, visited meetings and assisted the club with its activities. Generating more school spirit was the aim of the Pep Club, whose faithful members could be heard at all the ball games yelling their lungs out for the Rangers. The club made several trips to visit the S.I.U. Amateur Radio Club; entered a float, Tuned in and Turned on to Victory, in the Homecoming parade, and assisted in the Heart Drive. A special project for the club this year was the collection of Clark Cum Packs for UNICEF. What's the club's goal for the future?—establishment of an amateur radio station at B.CH.S. The Student Council of B.C.H.S. takes part in school issues and holds the responsibility of school government. The president presides over school assemblies. The girls got dressed in their Sunday best for the Farmers' Ball. One big event of the F.H.A. year was caroling with the Key Club boys. Wonder why? They welcomed all new members in January. The year closed with a Mother-Daughter Banquet in May. 53 Where did F.T.A. members go in 1970-71?—to S.I.U.; to Columbia, Illinois, site of Regional Workshop; to Europe— via a lively presentation by B.C.H.S. foreign travelers, Nancy Pope. Oneida Miller, and Bette )on Schrade. In January, semester break time, college students came back to tell it like it is and to answer lots of questions from Future Teachers. A lollipop exchange was a fun way to welcome freshman girls to membership in Benton Hi-TrL Formal welcome for freshmen came on October 20, with a ceremonial and tea for the girls and their mothers. Hi-Tri conferences were held in October (DuQuoin) and in April (Metropolis). ATHLETICS 58 HOMECOMING 1970 A Homecoming meeting was held, and Camelot was chosen as our 1970 theme. After a week of hard work and cooperation, the decorations were complete. Carla Hottensen was crowned Queen (right) for 1970. Her at-tendents (below) were as follows: (Left to right) Pam Cook and Jill Tindall, Juniors; Jeanne Milburn and Alice Jankousky, Seniors; Beverly Walker and Mary Kaye Moore, Freshman; Becky Harvey and Leslie Henley, Sophomores. 59 RANGERS AR :n AND TURN Homecoming began in utter turmoil; it was the coldest week in the history of Homecoming. As the floats lined up, paper began to fly. Inside the gym, the pep session was under way. Carla Hottenson was named Homecoming Queen. The parade consisted of various floats, from Stomp the Red Birds to Breakfast of Champions. The floats pulled out and the parade was in progress. 60 The game began with selections by the B.C.H.S. Ranger Band. The competition began; Benton was ahead. Despite the encouraging beginning, the Rangers suffered defeat. That evening brought the awaited Homecoming dance. Students and alumni danced prior to the crowning. Following the crowning, the Queen and her court left the stage. The floats moved toward the square one by one. As the last float reached the square, news of the winners filtered back to the school. The Spanish Club (top) won first prize with Put the Birds to Sleep. The Latin Club (far left) earned second prized with The Victory March, and the History Club (bottom) finished third with Stomp the Birds. . . . Coach Rich Herrin's crew had been playing logethei lor the last three years and had become a very polished ball club. The team set four goals at the beginning ot the year and completed three of them before they were stopped. The first of these goals was to win the South Seven Conference. The Running Rangers stalled off the season with flying colors by rolling over four straight conference opponents before bowling 74-72 to Centralia. After this the Rangers found that the Conference trophy was going to be a lough battle. Benton got down to work and reeled off nine victories. The first goal of winning the South Seven Conference was theirs. To win the Centralia Holiday Tournament was the second of the Rangers' lour goals. They beat a powerful Jacksonville ball club and advanced against Homewood. Benton defeated Homewood 85-66. Before playing in the finals, the Rangers faced a well-balanced Champaign ball club, which they defeated by the score oi 67-52. The second dream of the Rangers came true when Benton heat Centralia 64-52. The next goal was to win the Quad-City Tournament. The Rangers faced stiff competition from McLeansboro, Fairfield, and Carmi. Benton fought off every team thrown at them and won the Quad-City Trophy. The last goal was the one the Rangers were never to achieve. Benton entered the West Frankfort Regional with a long string of regional victories behind them. Benton opposed West Frankfort in the finals of the tournament and became the 1971 Frankfort Regional champs. During sectional play, the Rangers met Joppa. Benton won by the walloping score of 78-44. In the finals at Eldorado, Benton met Harrisburg, a team they had beaten twice during the season. The Rangers found Harrisburg a much improved ball club but beat them 69-56. Benton advanced to the Super-Sectional and fought off an attack waged by the fine Nashville team. The Rangers were on their way to Champaign with a final score of 60-52. The Rangers were one of the Elite 8” at state and faced the Oak Lawn Spartans in the first game. I he Rangers' dream of achieving their four goals was shattered 71-58. The 1970-71 Rangers won the South Seven Conference, Centralia Holiday Tournament, Quad City Tournament, and the Regional and Sectional trophies. The Benton Rangers were also featured in the Wall Street Journal. Benton fans should be very proud of their Running Rangers.” ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY 74 A teacher poses problems . . . helps a flutist with fingering . . . prepares a critique sheet . . . visits with Santa Claus . . . plays a recording . . . sprawls in a swivel chair . . . checks a supply shelf. . . manipulates radio controls. . . The Rangers had a very sound defense, but an offense that had trouble moving the ball. The high points of the Rangers season were traveling all the way to Metropolis and bringing back a victory by the score of 20-6. The Rangers battled the always powerful Centralia Orphans to a 6-6 deadlock game. 102 RANGERS Benton Opponents 6 Sparta 7 20 Metropolis 6 0 Marion 14 6 Cairo 14 13 Herrin 43 6 Centralia 6 7 Mt. Finishing with three wins and six losses may not have been an impressive season, but the Ranger Sophomores fought until the very end of every game. One of the highlights of the Sophomore season was the win over Zeigler-Royalton, by crushing them 62 to 6. Another high-point was beating Harrisburg 30 to 6. We had a football record of 5-2, and we had a better than great basketball team. As freshmen we did many things that we hadn't done in grade school, such as choosing class officers (picture). We also chose our nominees from the freshman class for Lil Abner and Daisy Mae, Richard Eubanks and Mary Kay Moore. We elected homecoming attendants, Beverly Walker and Mary Kay Moore. The freshman girls picked four girls to represent them in Hi-Tri, Beverly Walker, Debbie Wills, Karen Lockin, and Sheri Hobbs. Before school started the teachers picked two girls to represent us in cheerleading, Ann Wooley and Alecia VanHorn and the SCARAB Staff selected class editors at the beginning of the school year. They are Melinda Kolisek, Missy Malkovich, and Tom Mick. The freshman class is looking forward to life at B.C.H.S. for the next three years. Our sophomore year has been a time for making more friends and becoming better acquainted with ourselves. Once again the Sophomore Class was in charge of the concession stand during football and basketball games. Some of our other projects were a bake sale and a very successful fund raiser. We enjoyed building our class float, Charge Up. This year we exercised a little seniority, but we are looking forward to next year and the prestige of becoming upperclassmen. 125 Tom Davis Kathy Day Cordon Denham Ella Mae Douglas Tom Drew Crystal Duncan Jim Duncan Susan Duncan June Dungy Becky Eisenhauer Paula Fields Paul Fowler Rhonda Friar Sherry Fuller Carol Galbraith Pam Gipson Becky Goff Robert Goss Arthur Gostowski Steve Green Thelma Ham Sandra Haney Pam Hankins Mark Harben Becky Harvey Leslie Henley Robbye Hill Clarence Hogan Harold Hosick Dianne Howard 126 Jim Howard Mike Hudson Fred Hunter David Hurley Sandra Irvin Mary Jankousky Don Jiles Kevin Johnson Eddie Jones Becky Kays Christine Kearney Dennis Keelin Judy King Marsha King Bill Kinison Russell Kinkade Kathy Knight Dennis Lampley John Lampley Rick Lampley Kathy Lance 127 John Lewis Cathy Ludwig Mark Malkovich Greg Mandrell Donna Manning Ronnie Manning Marsha Martin Debra Mayer Susan McCann Wendy McClintock David McCollum Roger McPherson Roger Merkel Terry Milburn Karen Mitchell Sarah Mitchell Chris Moore Rhonda Moore Debbie Morris Dennis Neal Warren Neal Tim Norman Brad Odom Joe Padavic Julie Payne Dennis Piercy Gayla Pierson Randy Pierson Linda Ponder Debra Poole 128 Larry Poole Tim Pribble Richard Rea Jo Reddy Beverly Reed Eric Reynolds Art Rice Scott Rice Debbie Richardson Steve Riley Candy Robey Tawana Rone Leon Sanders Mary Beth Saunders Terry Savko Janice Schleicher Dawn Severin David Shadoan Karen Shadoan Robert Shelton Barry Sink Judy Sink 129 John Slayton jo Carol Smith Dennis Sneed Lindell Sneed Darrell Snyder Sheila Somers Cary Southerland LaVera Spilman Lex Stewart Terry Storey Ted Stotlar David Stowers Joel Studt Nancy Studt Debbie Sullivan James Summers Kenny Summers Pam Summers Roger Sweet Melanie Tabor Terry Tennant Carry Thomas Kay Thomas Jeanette Timmons Mary Lou Townley Lynette VanHorn Larry Veteto Carry Wayman Brenda Webb Darrell Webb 130 Linda Webb Wayne Wertz Cathy Whitehead James Whittington Terry Wilkerson Cindy Williams James Williams June Wilson Alan Wisely Donna Woodrow Diana Wyman 131 Ned Wymer Mark Zinzilieta Junior Class Officers and Sponsors: j.V. CLASS OF 1972 It seems that all too soon we find ourselves juniors and that this year has passed even more quickly than the first two. In September a committee of juniors selected our class rings. Later in the fall we sold the world's finest chocolate as the fund raiser for the prom. Junior atheletes played important parts on the football and basketball teams at B.C.H.S. In January we presented Blithe Spirit as our class play. Now we are all looking forward to our last year in high school which, like this one, will pass much too fast. 132 Mark Aaron Billy Adams Mona Adams Brian Auten Jo Lynn Bailie William Baker Verna Barminski Bill Barminski Robert Barnfield Mike Barr Jane Beasley Darrell Brown Dianna Brown Jamie Brown Diana Burgess Bill Burnett 133 Jane Carleton Jams Carr Kalhy Cockrum Pam Cook Kalhy Crisp Sandy Curry Jim Davis Keith Davis Steve Dawson Pat Dempsey Tony Diefenbach Steve Dunn Anna Eaton Mary Foster David Caravalia Larry Ciacone 134 Janette Gifford Janet Goodrum Kimberley Grenco Alan Gulley Kim Hamilton Cindy Hammond Larry Haney Frank Harmon James Hart Becky Henley f f Mary Hollis Hill Dana Hobbs Donna Hollaway Karen Hollaway 135 Paula Holmes Ralph L. We look back and catch a blurry glimpse of all our long-lost memories................ Remember our fear of entering the big world of high school , our Freshman float that won third place, our first homecoming, and the fumbling at our locker combinations? Remember the polywogs, our second place winning sophomore float, and the sophomore tests? Remember how our class always had to be different—so we ordered class rings just like our predecessors—Tahitian holiday, our Prom theme, the candy sales, our first place winning float, and our two Christmas plays— Pop Reads the Christmas Carol, and The Christmas Miser ? Remember a famous first for B.C.H.S.—black graduation announcements? Remember our last homecoming, Cheaper By the Dozen , Macbeth, and the hustle of Senior Week? These are just a sprinkling of the memories that have formed in eight short semesters. As we all go our separate ways, some events will be forgotten, but many will live on forever.
