ze ¢ eh Benton Public Library Dish 502 S. Main St - Benton, AL 62812 dedication A major concern of our generationis the lack of in dividualism in our lives, The definition from Webster's defines an individual as one marked by a dis- tinctness and a complexity within a unity that characterizes a person; being peculiar, striking, or uncommon enough in character to be easily identified or distinguished. The 1970 SCARAB has explored the role of the individual in the daily school life. We have tried to capture those moments that fulfill our definition of the individual. All human beings have a desire to be individuals, but individualism is es- pecially important to young people. There exists-a fear that in our adult life we will become just another obscure cog in the wheel of everyday living; that at the time of our death we will have left nothing to show that we fulfilled any ‘purpose on earth, This is why we strive to be brave enough to say what we feel is right, to try new challenges, and to work to succeed in whatever en- . deavor we feel will make us an individual. Only Gouge changes in our way of life can individuals strive toward a goal of a better world: With these few thoughts in mind, we proudly present the 1970 SCARAB. May you enjoy it now and for PDEDy, years to come. bold goes the individual wander: ___ing through the depressions of hell ar d the joys of eden ing alone before the a yf ( ayy r¢ ; 1 is haracter Inc a leader strong trlads Pee et = 7 ] : i y ‘ N 7-4 OAK A? pk em : ROC MA US grateful ive thankful to be al ] In ein niin tise 7 ‘ ‘ 4 ) d ) A «4 ep e ‘ a el tel 4 3 ae is poe pesmnae sss TS, ‘ ny Lert Pei) We 2) Tse See e ay F a: af if : a) t Py re vad, Aaa {qi ceh rn srt TA a OE rh AS sh Ae ee lies eae A } - “4 5 te + “ onebeforeGod _— sonal possession. For the first time the queen and her court were announced during the pep session. Due to these changes, the Queen and her court were able to reign over the game and the parade. The theme for the Homecoming Dance was A Time For Us . The gym was decorated in a combination of lavender and purple. The spirit at the Pep session this year was really great, especially from the Senior and Sophomore classes. The Sophomore class was awarded the spirit stick for their voracious support of the Rangers. The clubs and classes went all out to win the prize for the best floats in the 1969-70 Home- coming Parade. The result of their enthusiasm was one of the best parades in many years. Without a doubt one of the finest floats was the Senior class and Art Club float, although it didn ‘t win a prize. The night before the game a bonfire was held at Paula and Janice Odom's. There was a good turnout and everybody was in high spirits. a decorations, 1. Miss Armentrout and Mrs. Roberts receive a gift for the hard work and many hours put inon Homecoming decorations. 2. Tensions and emotions were at their peak. The student body, which had displayed their tre- mendous Ranger spirit in the pep session on the previous afternoon, had left in the boys a raging desire for victory. They fought to the end, never giving up, especially the seniors realizing it was their last Ranger football game. Although the game ended witha score of 18 to 0 for the Redbirds, everyone was very proud of our 1970 Rangers. 20 The attendants and their escorts were as follows: (right) Mike Wasylczak, Jean Ann Corn; Stewart Waggoner, Carla Hotten- son; John Kasky, Kerrie Lampley; Mike Gordon, Mary Jankousky. the queen’s court A Time for Us was the theme forthe 1969 BCHS Homecoming. The climax was _ the crowning of Miss Judy Barton as the 1969-70 Homecoming Queen. She was crowned by co- captains Dennis Parker and John Munoz. Miss Debbie Auten, 1968-69 Queen, was escorted from her throne by last year's tri- captains Mike Gunter, Rick Rusher, and Larry Williams. The band which supplied the music for the evening was the Blue Shadows. There was no grand march this year. The Rangers’ only win of theseason came at home against Cairo 26--6. The Rangers started their gridiron campaign at Sparta where the Ran- gers lost not only the game but also Sr. quarterback John Kasky and star half- back Roger Adkins. Ad- kins received a knee in- jury that kept him side- lined the remainder of the season. Injuries were very prevalent during the sea- son and were a main cause of the poor record. The Rangers hosted Metropolis at home the second game of the sea- son. They played one of their better games of the season but fell short 14-- 12. The Rangers' next two home encounters ended in a lossto Marionand a win against Cairo. Traveling to Herrin the Rangers won every phase of statistics except the fi- nal score which fell in Herrin's favor 12--0. The Rangers traveled to Cen- tralia where they were easily defeated by the Orphans. The Rangers' next bat- tle was against Mt. Ver- non. They played a good game against the visiting Rams butstill suffered de- feat 28--7. The Rangers continued to play good football for the remainder of the sea- son but still could not find victory. The Rangers ended the season with lossesto Carbondale, Har- risburg, Johnston City, and West Frankfort. Although the Rangers ended with a losing rec- ord, the season could not be called a loss. The Ran- gers possessed every qual- ity of a traditional hard- hitting team, which gave the fans many exciting moments. 24 benton rangers we ee c ae eth. The Ranger's high points consisted of victories over Herrin, Metropolis, Centralia, and Harrisburg. The low points of the season were two point losses to Mt. Vernon, Carbondale, and West Frankfort. A 12--0 loss at the hands of a rough Marion team was the Rangers only convincing defeat. The tie on the Rangers’ record was their second meeting with Herrin where the two teams battled to a scoreless tie. Several Sophomores experienced valuable var- Sity action due to injuries that plagued the varsity Rangers. The Sophomore Rangers show great promise for the next two years and will be tough competition in the future. Sophomore coach Kenneth Hungate. 26 The Ranger Freshman ended a disappointing season with a 1--7 record. The lone win came at Harrisburg, the final game of the season 34--12. The yearling freshman lost to Eldorado, Cen- tralia, Carbondale, Marion, Mt. Vernon, Herrin, and West Frankfort. Although the Rangers suffered many defeats they never gave up until the final gun sounded. With four juniors and one sophomore in the Starting line-up, Coach Herrin's team placed second in the conference, one game behind the Mt. Vernon Rams. The basketball season started in a rough way for the Rangers. Going into the Cen- tralia Tournament, the Rangers carried a 2--3 record. The tournament held no sur- prises for the Rangers. They were defeated by New Trier in the first game. After beat- ing Salem in the second game, the Rangers were the victims of a strong Peoria Spauld- ing team that eliminated the Rangers from the tournament. The Rangers continued with their sporadic play until the Quad City Tournament. After losing to Fairfield in the first game of the tournament the Rangers went on to beat McLeansboro and Carmi. After the loss to Fairfield, the Rangers managed 10 wins out of their next 11 games. The Rangers ended their regular season with a 15--9 record, Starting the Regional Tournament, the Rangers were underdogs to West Frankfort, who had defeated the Rangers twice during the regular season. After disposing of Chris- topher and Johnston City, the Rangers were matched against West Frankfort for the championship, and the rightto advance to the Sectional Tournament at Harrisburg. In a hard fought game the Rangers came out as victors over the Redbirds and advanced to the Sectional Tournament. After disposing of Pope County their first Sectional foe, the Rangers advanced to the finals against Mt. Vernon. Following a long seasons battle, the Rangers finally fell to the Rams 70--63. This ended the season with a 19--10 record. benton rangers Varsity Basketball Team: STANDING: Assist. The Rangers never gave up and lost 7 of their games by 4 points or less. Although the Rangers had a poor regular season, the Sophomore Tournament was a climax. As freshmen, we spent most of the year becoming acquainted with the people of our class, teachers, and life at B.C.H.S, Our sophomore year came and passed as quickly as the year be- fore. We occupied our time with selling Zip Code Books and can- dles. As juniors, we were first to put ona variety show instead ofa play. The JUNIOR VAUDEVILLE VA- RIETY SHOW was a success. The spring of the year brought another first, Junior Skip Day. We gave a beautiful Senior Prom with the theme Bon Voyage. Our senior year began with our play. It was a court room drama, THE PEOPLE VS. MAXINE LOWE. We enjoyed our Senior Prom and look forward to Gradu- ation. Looking ahead, we wish for Peace. The raffle was quite a success. Another project of the Sopho- more class was working in the concession stand during football and basketball games. Being able to serve people, sell them a coke or popcorn, and proudly to give them their change w ith a smile. To say thank-you and please come back was a rewarding experience. A really great honor was win- ning the Spirit Stick at the 1969 Homecoming pep session. We took pride in our support of our Ran- gers. We look forward to the prestige of becoming an upperclassman next year, but we will always look back to our Sophomore year with a smile. New schedules, rules, and regulations had tobe learned. The classes seemed to be days long. After things settled down, we began to get in- volved in Clubs, election of officers, and float build- ing. Next year we are look- ing forward to becoming sophomores--not because we like the sound of the word sophomore better than freshman--but be- cause we will no longer be the greenies of high school. freshmen Mary Alice Pribble, Robert Philipak, Mildred Neal.
