The Voices of BCHS The reason we haye come to high school is to learn. The voices of learning are many and varied: the clicking of typewriters, the blatant notes of the band, the silence of the study hall, and the unfamiliar sounds of foreign languages. Sounds that are familiar to all of us and belong in learning are the sounds of the cafeteria, the clatter of dishes, the tromping of feet down the halls, and the ringing of the lunch bell. ; There many sounds of the different classes, We have many subjects from which to choose our classes. We hear the sputter of chemistry and physics ex- periments, the discussion of history and problems, and the various chirps of birds in the biology class. All these sounds belong in the echo of the halls and will always remain there. You may hear the clicking of typewriters as future secretaries develop their skill.

—are the many sounds of school and most important the voice of learning. In the beginning in September, we finally settled down to the routine of study after a happy fun-filled summer. The first big events of the school year 1958-59 were the Homecoming parade, game, and dance. At the parade, the Latin Club won first prize for its float. The Rangers thrilled all their fans at the game by pulling an upset over West Frankfort. Dreams came true at the dance when everyone was with that “special” person to see Miss Judy McCarty crowned Homecoming Queen of 1958. In December the highlight of the holiday season was the F.H.A. Christmas dance, the “Mistletoe Ball.” The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Scarab Royalty. Mr. Jerry Pirtle and Miss Judy McCarty were crowned King and Queen. In February the big event was Heart Sister Week, sponsored by Hi-Iri. March was the most thrilling month of all. The Benton Rangers were the “Cinderella Team of the Sweet Sixteen” when we won the Regional Tournament in Eldorado. The special event for March was the Echo Carnival. Daisy Mae was Marjorie Cox and Lil Abner was Gene Mitchell. Brenda Payne was selected as the new Echo Editor. “Venus” was the theme of the last all-school dance sponsored by Hi-Iri. Jane Dillon was announced as the new President of Hi-Tri. The new Scarab Staff was announced in an issue of the Echo. Evelyn Payne was chosen as the Editor for 1960. In May the seniors realized their dream and graduated on May 27. During the second week in May, the juniors worked diligently to make “The Last Roundup” successful at the Junior-Senior Reception on May 9.
