Benton Public Library Dist. 302 S. Main St Benton, IL 62812 2 bi dé. T on Wl . FED HIGH SCHOOL Miss Etna Morrison To You--Our Scarab We are very proud to dedicate the 1959 Scarab to Miss Etna Morrison, mathematics teacher at Ben- ton Consolidated High School. It was our good for- tune when Miss Morrison came to Benton to teach in 1926, Besides teaching algebra, geometry, and trigonom- etry, Miss Morrison has found time to help and en- courage many students outside school hours. Ter room is always open before and after school to stu- dents who need extra help in their schoolwork. She also has been the sponsor of many classes, accom- panies Speech students on trips, and sponsors the national mathematics society, Mu Alpha Theta. Many students of Miss Morrison have had su- perior records in college and in mathematical fields. We hope we will all measure up to your hig standards, Miss Morrison, and we all would like to say “Thank You” for all your help. : Editor Judy McCarty, Carolyn Browning, Feature Editor The Editors Speaking We of the editorial staff of the 1959 Scarab wish to thank all those who in any way made the publi- cation of the yearbook possible. Individuals we wish to especially thank are Mr. Browning, our advisor; Evelyn Payne, our assistant editor; Jim Upchurch, our photographer; and Gladys Davis, business man- ager. We are grateful to all the teachers at BCHS for their co-operation throughout the school year. Also, we wish to thank Paul Hickman and Joe Bor- toletto for the help they gaye us with our pictures. We hope everyone will be pleased with our book this year, and in future years we hope that you will remember your high school days when you glance through your 1959 Scarab. Eddie Simpson, Sports Editor Judy Finley, Class Editor The Voices of BCHS The reason we haye come to high school is to learn. The voices of learning are many and varied: the clicking of typewriters, the blatant notes of the band, the silence of the study hall, and the unfamiliar sounds of foreign languages. Sounds that are familiar to all of us and belong in learning are the sounds of the cafeteria, the clatter of dishes, the tromping of feet down the halls, and the ringing of the lunch bell. ; There many sounds of the different classes, We have many subjects from which to choose our classes. We hear the sputter of chemistry and physics ex- periments, the discussion of history and problems, and the various chirps of birds in the biology class. All these sounds belong in the echo of the halls and will always remain there. You may hear the clicking of typewriters as future secretaries develop their skill. —are the many sounds of school and most important the voice of learning. In the beginning in September, we finally settled down to the routine of study after a happy fun-filled summer. The first big events of the school year 1958-59 were the Homecoming parade, game, and dance. At the parade, the Latin Club won first prize for its float. The Rangers thrilled all their fans at the game by pulling an upset over West Frankfort. Dreams came true at the dance when everyone was with that “special” person to see Miss Judy McCarty crowned Homecoming Queen of 1958. In December the highlight of the holiday season was the F.H.A. Christmas dance, the “Mistletoe Ball.” The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Scarab Royalty. Mr. Jerry Pirtle and Miss Judy McCarty were crowned King and Queen. In February the big event was Heart Sister Week, sponsored by Hi-Iri. March was the most thrilling month of all. The Benton Rangers were the “Cinderella Team of the Sweet Sixteen” when we won the Regional Tournament in Eldorado. The special event for March was the Echo Carnival. Daisy Mae was Marjorie Cox and Lil Abner was Gene Mitchell. Brenda Payne was selected as the new Echo Editor. “Venus” was the theme of the last all-school dance sponsored by Hi-Iri. Jane Dillon was announced as the new President of Hi-Tri. The new Scarab Staff was announced in an issue of the Echo. Evelyn Payne was chosen as the Editor for 1960. In May the seniors realized their dream and graduated on May 27. During the second week in May, the juniors worked diligently to make “The Last Roundup” successful at the Junior-Senior Reception on May 9. Vowel sounds in foreign languages are heard as Miss Armentrout declines a noun. The Voices Vary — some are loud brassy sounds O pen your ears and listen to the many sounds that come from the campus of BCHS. Some cannot be heard, while others are very prominent, but they all belong to the soul of our dear old alma mater. As we reveiw the book of learning of the past four years, we hear the rustle of the pages that we shall never hear again. As we look back in the years to come, there will be many outstanding sounds we will remember: the cheering fans at an exciting ball game, the rattling — of lockers between classes, the clanging of the bell — after every hour, the screeching of tires, and the greetings of lifelong friends we met in | ol. We shall have memories the the s, the awkward silence our ] ‘ial If physics fficu ton o Physics club at one of their The solut meetings. Fun — Characterize the students of B.C. H. S. The telephone rings, and the gang calls and wants to go riding. They pick us up, and we are off to the root beer stand. As we arrive at the root beer stand, the sounds of rock and roll music blast our ears as we sip the refreshments and enjoy the chatter from the surrounding cars. We also hear the synocopated rhythms of the kids dancing on the roof. As we head north on wide, smooth route 37, we hear the whine and whistle of the cars as they scurry by. Arriving at Lake Benton, we are greeted by the sound of melodic roller skates at the roller rink. We then decide to go to the payilion, and we hear more music with the scuff of feet on the dance floor. We also hear the sound of pin ball machines and the clinking of soda bottles. We then decide to stroll down to the pool, and we hear the splash- ing of water and the yelling of kids. The noise is suddenly interrupted by the shrieking of the lifegard’s whistle. He is calling two misbehav ing boys. The trouble is soon taken care of, and the noise resumes. We once again load in the car and start back for ihe square. On the way we meet friends and exchange hellos by the honking of horns. As we come to the square, we meet friends and stop and talk awhile. We then take one last ride around the square and head for home. We have come to the end of a Saturday afternoon. Sound of N f current news in problems class. Iscussion oO You may hear the d 12 We shall always remember the silence and the suspense of exams and exuberance and yells after they were over. ‘J he proud exclama- tions of our parents when our name appeared on the honor roll and when we attend the Honor Banquets will remain high on our list of memories, The quiet excitement of our first Flomecoming, part of our memory of and the sad but more confident last Homecoming were BCHS sounds. The applause for our class attendants and Queen was thunderous; as was our class yell at pep sessions. We truly lived for the day when we yelled—fifteen rahs for the Seniors. All in all it has been a vibrant four years. We have truly lived and and we shall always bring to mind the enjoyed every moment of it, and all the good times of our high sounds of fun, the excitement, school years. Seniors —— Vibrant excitement for our last year of school. Sell that candy, boys; we're in debt. We need money quick! The silence of secrecy describes the class elections where all voting is done confidentially. 13 Sh-h-h- is the sound of the restless study hall at the end of the day. —the study hall and semester exams. The 1958 Homecoming Queen was Judy McCarty. She was elected by the varsity football team and was crowned by co-captains Jerry Pirtle and Joe West. Football The Rangers got off to a flying start this season by defeating Metropolis, 44-0, but they were unable to keep up the winning pace because of injuries, lack of constituents, and because it was one of the smallest teams Benton has had in several years. After three wins and two losses, the Rangers completed the season by defeating West Frankfort, 22-0. This timely game put the Rangers in second place in the South Seven Confer ence. This year the co-captains were Jerry Pirtle and Joe West. The other senior members were Alfred Lynch, Terry Deiro, Jeff Fer guson, Bill Gamble, Nealy Glenn, Phil Bailie, David Bailey, Ward Johnson, Vic i Tasky, Larry Durham, and George Warren. — Roger Mundell, Kenneth Hutchens, Robert Jilek, Larry Burgess. They not only cheer at every football and basketball game, but also plan and are in charge of all pep sessions. They encourage students to back the team by attending games, and they boost the morale of the Rangers by giving them needed support. The varsity squad consists of two seniors, Brenda Fisher and Eleanor Rice, and two juniors, Evelyn Payne and Brenda Payne. The Fresh- Soph cheerleaders are composed of two sophomores and two freshmen. They are Dee Rice, Diana Shew, Mary Lou Chance, and Judy Short. Fisher, Rice, E. Payne, B. Payne Up and Over! We of BCHS believe that our coaching staff, consisting of Head Coach, Ralph Davison, and assistants Glenn Trulove and Gene Ernest, is the best in the state of Illi- nois. These men work diligently cvery night after school to develop and encourage stu- dents who participate in football, basketball, or track. Mr. Ernest coaches the freshmen and helps them to become accustomed to sports at BCHS, while Mr. Davison and Mr. Trulove work with the varsity. The managers of the football and basketball team were Gary Miller, Paul Davis, and Mike Williams. These boys help the coaches by keeping all the equipment in shape for every game. They stay after school when the team practices, and the managers ac- company the teams to all games.
