Through this book we hope to bring to you the highlights of the school year; the year that Benton produced one of the best football and basketball teams it has ever seen; the year Chinese collars, bop shoes, hoop skirts, ane Italian shirts became fads; the year we saw the political conven- ; rd ing uguration; and of course, the year the thing called Elvis Benton, Illinois A bird's-eye view of Benton. Any area of great importance must have a center of activities. The center of all the important activities in “Little Egypt’ is the capital, Benton. From throughout the entire area the populace focuses its attention toward this prosperous and successful city, which is located on a flat plain in the approximate geographical center of “Little Eg A familiar sight to all of us. BENTON... — the capital of “Little Egypt” and Ihe seat of Franklin County .. - In the city of Benton there are located two new modern build- ings. These structures add to the integrity and prestige of Benton. Cafeteria Staff Thanks to the cafeteria staff, the students are provided with well-balanced hot meals. Centralia finally managed to hold Benton to a 13-13 tie. The Rangers then invaded Marion and defeated them 26-20 for Benton’s first conference vic- tory, Ihe next game offered a setback for Benton with the Rangers losing, their only loss, to a strong Danville team 26-6. Then the Rangers suffered their worst defeat of the season, absorbing a 55-6 romp at the hands of Centralia. The young Rang- ers suffered a second consecutive loss of the season as they fell behind and never could catch up with the Marion Wildcats, losing 27-14. In a rugged contest of rivals, the Rangers lost a close game to the West Frankfort Red Birds, 13-0. The Rangers suffered several injuries in the West Frankfort contest, and as a result, were beaten the following week by the Mt. Vernon Rams, 40-6. The Rangers had only two remaining games and needed victories in both for a 5-4 season record. They were victorious in both counts, edging Metro- polis, 20-12, and crushing Harrisburg 21-0. In another rivalry contest, Benton stopped a last minute rally and defeated the state ranked West Frankfort Red Birds 55-53. Llowever, in the second contest with West Frankfort, Benton had a cold night and was defeated, 89-46. In other conference competition, Benton lost to Mt. Vernon twice, 66-44 and 34-26, Marion twice, 60-43 and 57-45, Herrin twice, 79-51 and 82-44, Centralia twice, 56-53 and 77-62, and Harrisburg twice, 77-74and 68-64. In non-conference play, the Rangers won two games and lost eight. They ran away from Johnston City and crushed Eldorado with a blistering offensive attack. In addition to the defeat by Christopher, Benton’s losses included a 64-33 crushing by Carbondale, a narrow 61-56 edging by McLeansboro, a trim- ming by DuQuoin, 64-51, a 64-56 thriller to Carmi, and a shellacking by Murphysboro. sh “Gel that ball | EY Be 4 Gi Ea a ei 5 Z ei P . - Regional Tournament The regional tournament, which was held at Benton this year, was won by West Frankfort. Teams participating in the tournament were West Frankfort, Zeigler, Johnston City, Galatia, Benton, Sesser, Christopher, and Woodlawn. In the opening rounds, West Frankfort de- feated Zeigler 58-44, Johnston City defeated Gala- tia 57-51, Benton defeated Sesser 56-46, and Christopher defeated Woodlawn 60-58. In the second round, West Frankfort defeated Johns- ton City 78-52, and Benton defeated Christopher 80-58. In the final round, the Rangers were beaten by the West Frankfort Red Birds. After stomping Marion, the Rangers dropped three, one to Herrin, 74-57, Centra- lia, 58-46, and Harrisburg, 49-47, before they gained their next victory by crushing Johns- ton City, 66-49. After that, Benton was beat- en by West Frankfort, 60-39, and Mt. Ver- non, 67-41. The Rangers closed out the season in high style, winning six out the last eight contests. Freshmen The young Rangers began the season with a 62-54 loss to West Frankfort, and then opened a three game winning streak by defeating Harris- burg 43-36 and Christopher 42-30, and 59-16 the second time. After a defeat by Johnston City, Paula Jones, Eleanor Rice, Brenda Fisher, and Evelyn Payne. 46-36, the Rangers for the second time defeated Harrisburg 41-39. In turn, West Frankfort crushed us with a 43-63 defeat, and Benton crushed Sesser three games in succession, 62-50, 60-32, and 42-9. Track 1956 The Benton Rangers’ track team enjoyed a good 1956 season. In their first meet, the Rangers chalked up 125 points to crush Johnston City and Sesser. The Rangers then trimmed Marion in a dual meet, 77-46, placed third in the county meet, fifth in the West Frankfort relays, tenth in the Herrin relays, and fifth in the South Seven Conference meet. The hurdle relay team of Jim Rhodes, Ralph King, Pete Ross, and Ed Fredette, shattered the standing record in the hurdle event with a time of 57.6 seconds. In the district track meet Ed Fredette qualified for the state meet and became the second Ranger in BCHS history to put the shot over fifty feet.
