The Rangers then traveled to Mt. Vernon, to tackle the Rains in their first conference game. After playing a good first half, the Rangers fell apart in the second half, and the Rams were a 25-6 victor. On September 29, Blythesville, .Ark, invaded home soil, and were heavily favored to defeat the Rangers. The hopeless Rangers couldn't even reach pay dirt, and Blythesville walked over the Rangers to the tune of 32-0. [69] Row 1: Knight, Garlx , Southern, Wertz, Kays, Briley, Taylor. After dropping three games in a row, the Benton Rangers, out for revenge, met the Marion Wildcats at Marion. This time Marion was the underdog, and Benton a one touchdown favorite. Benton played a hard, clean game and emerged victoriously, a 23-0 winner. This was the Rangers’ first win of the season. The Rangers then journeyed to Herrin, to meet the Tigers in their third conference tilt. Again Benton was a slight favorite, but the Tigers weren’t to lx defeated, and the Rangers had to lx satisfied with a 13-13 deadlock. The Centralia Orphans were next to hand our Rangers a defeat. The Orphans were a strong favorite, but they had to battle all the way to sulxlue the stubborn Rangers. A large crowd turned out on the chilly afternoon, to see the Rangers drop their third conference game, and their sixth game out of eight starts. Harrisburg had it easy-going in handing Benton a 33-6 setback. The tide finally turned when Zeigler, fighting for the Coal Belt Conference title, came to town. Freshman-Sophomore Football Summary The Benton Frosh-Soph. squad opened the 1950 football campaign with a 12-12 stalemate with the Mt. Vernon Hams. After tying the young Rams in the opener, no one could stop them. They defeated their next ten opponents in succession, including the West Frankfort Red Birds in the season's final. The Rangers rolled up a total of 416 points to 119 for their opposition. This was a total of 37.8 points per game to a meager 11 points for their opponents. They also were tied for the conference lead with Mt. Vernon. Not a bad season, huh? 176| Freshmen-Sophomore Football Scores °Mt. Season’s Summary With four sophomores in the starting line up, the Benton Rangers were defeated by the Christopher Bearcats 42-32, on the local floor, in the season’s opener. After losing their opener, the Rangers couldn’t get out of the losing column, and dropped their next twelve games in succession. They then upset Salem, defeating the highly favored Wildcats by one point, 46-45. The Rangers then dropped four more games, then in their second encounter with Christopher, they defeated the Bearcats, 58-41. This victory over Christopher was to be the last one of the 1950-51 basketball season. They dropped their last four games, one to Tilden Tech, and the other three to Conference opponents. 180] The Rangers ended up in the South Seven Conference cellar with not a single victory. The season was a very dark one, as far as fans were concerned. The Rangers had a total of 3 wins and 22 losses for an unimpressive .135 average (tournament games included). This year he Rangers lacked the much needed experience. [83] Fresh man-Sophomore Basketball Summary The 1950-51 basketball seemed to start out in high gear for the Ranger Freshmen-Sophomore squad. The Rangers defeated Christopher and Eldorado in the season's first two contests, and then went on a long losing streak, which didn’t end until the season was nearly completed. The Rangers won only four games throughout the entire compaign. They defeated Christopher twice, Eldorado, and an upset victory over West Frankfort. The most severe defeat was suffered at the hands of Mt. Vernon Rams, when the Rams scored three times as many points. That score, by the way, was 71-20. An overall picture of the basketball season shows the Rangers had an unimpressive record of 4 wins, and 14 losses. With such stars as John Bauer, Lloyd Spencer, Howard Neal, and Dick Neal, the Rangers showed that they were no pushover, and usually placed either third or fourth. In the State Meet, Dick Neal and Lloyd Spencer were eliminated in the preliminaries, and Howard Neal became nervous and took a tumble in both the low and high hurdles and didn’t even finish. John Bauer was the most outstanding trackman for the Rangers, inasmuch as he broke the state record by throwing the shot put 56 feet, 5% inches. Bauer also placed second with the discus. Some of the senior lettermen who won’t return are Dave Bauer, Howard Neal, Richard Neal, Everett Lipe, and John Bauer.
