Coach John Corn and Athletic Director Don Anderson began th-ir service In the Athletic Department of Benton Township High School this year. They were capable coaches. SEASON SUMMARY On September first, the Champaign Marrons invaded Tabor Field to give the Rangers their first defeat of the season, 15 to ?. On a very muddy field and in a downpour of rain the Rangers hopes fell considerably, not only because of defeat, but of the blow of Hartman18 leg being broken. This put him out for the remainder of the season. The Rangers entertained their first conference foe on the following. Saturday evening. The Rams fell below the improved and powerful Benton boys to the score of 21-6. Benton probably met its most powerful foe of the year when they traveledto Evansville, Indiana to take on Central High School. As Benton was low on man-power, they could not hold up under the fire and strength of Central. After several injuries the Rangers hobbled home with their second defeat of the season—36-20. The Rangers were back in the win column when the Marlon Wildcats succombed to the power of the home town boys. The score of 45-0 easily indicates that there Just wasn’t much competition. With the Rangers owning a .500 percentage they acted as hosts to the Herrin Tigers on the 15th of October. As most Herrin fans went home thinking they hadn’t been treated nicely because their Tigers had given way to the powerful Rangers to the tune of 25-0. A two weeks layoff gave the Rangers ample time to prepare for that all important game at Centralla. But, It seems that It wasn't long enough as the Benton boys fell to the charges of King Arthur Trout by Just one touchdown, 33-27 Those big, tall boys from Salem came to Benton the following Saturday night with blood In their eyes, but soon saw that the Rangers were tough, too. After a two hour nip and tuck brawl, the Wildcats went home with a close 24-21 defeat at the hands of the Rangers. The biggest upset of the year as far as the Rangers were concerned happened on Armistice Day. The supposedly weak charges of Coach Ralph Davison went home with a close 7-0 victory In their pockets as Benton stood, with their mouth open. It was a sad day In the town of Benton. With the effects of the Harrisburg game worn off a little the Rangers plastered the Red Birds of West Frankfort, 14-0. It was a conference victory but more than that, it edged on that rivalry of the two teams to the tune of two consecutive victories for the RangeB. Then the Benton boys bounced back with a victory at Herrin. After this the Anderson-men were never to win a game until the opening game of the Benton Tournament. During this string of losses they were defeated by West Frankfort 48 to 37- Then they received the largest set-back of the season as the Indians of Johnston City snowed them under 81 to 27. In the next game the Rangers traveled to Mt. Vernon to receive another trouncing to the tune of 68 to 18. Arriving home from the East St. Louie Tournament, The Benton boys were defeated by Marlon, and followed that with a loss at DuQuoin. Then the state champions Flams of Mt. Vernon called at the Benton gym to leave another scar on the Benton schedule. Then followed another one-point decision in favor of the Harrisburg Bulldogs and a defeat to the Panthers of Plnckney-ville.
