HIS LAUGHTER LIT UP OUR HEARTS IN MEMORIAM Larry Pilgram A smile, a wink, a soft hello; little things like these we remember so well. His laughter, his face that lit up our hearts, giving us a feeling of having and being a friend. Then it ended. It tore us apart. He was taken away. Our friend was gone. But we cannot forget that we must go on, live our lives just like the way he lived his. To the fullest of our ability. Science affects us at everytime and in everyplace. By studying science a student can learn a great deal. A wide variety of classes are offered in- cluding Earth and Physical Science, Biology I and II, Chemistry I and II, Physics and Science Investiga- tions. “A student who is college bound is required to take 2 years of Science, but 4 years is most helpful” according to Department Head, Mr.Bill Horn. Earth and Physical Science along with Biology I and Chemistry I are the foundations for Science. They are backed up by Biology II, Chemistry II and Physics. Science Investigation captures the award for the most challenging and quit enjoyable according to the students. Science Investigations is a full year class in which students are assigned a project that usually deals with the area of environmental science but the students do the project themselves. The pro- ject is developed at the beginning of the year and the end results are due at the finish of the school year. Above Right: Chad Cluts concentrates fully on weighing a substance in chemistry. WRITING, READING, SPEAKING- COMMUNICATING Mrs. Wendy Bayer has been teaching English here at Benton for 10 years. She decided to teach English because she loves to read. She also thinks its a good job to have and raise children at the same time. Where the level of mu- sicianship has perhaps dropped is in Concert Choir. Not because the students are less capable, but because there are fewer of them. We have four good drama classes. We had a large cast of all school play actors actresses and an excellent technical staff.” He feels “We do need more leader- ship but that should come as students get more experience. He would like to see faculty members help out. They could add so much experience and guid- ance and truly make it an all school play. But it would have to be on a vol- unteer basis. As it stands now we do not have a true all school play musical. True, it (the tryouts) are open to the entire student body but faculty partici- pation is very limited. Benton High School’s stage crew had the most challenging tin working on the all school play “Fame”. There wasn’t a lot of scenery i build, but the scene changes and light cues were the toughest to maste In every scene the crews had to change and move everything from ba stage to the stage and then hack again. Fame came to the Benton stage in November of 1987. Benton produced the popular Broadway play “Fame”. Fame was a doublecast. Doublecasting means that two people play the same role on alternating nights. The director , John Hoffman, was quoted as saying “The last all school play musical that was doublecast was “Sugar” produced in 1981.” Altogether 129 students were involved in the production of “Fame”. Fame was presented on November 20 and 21, and each performance played to a sold out crowd. Rehearsal time was very limited and the crews had to deal with many interruptions and conflicts. But none were too difficult to overcome. Also assisting in the direction of “Fame” were Darcee Pierce who is a former student of Benton and an excellent choreographer. Spe- cial thanks to Mr. Larry Robbins who assisted with the sound equipment and vocal music. Fame would not have been possible if it had not been for the dedication and expertise of the director Mr. John Hoffman. Thanks to all who were involved, Fame was a tremendous success. This year’s 1987-88 cheerleaders attented The National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer clinic. Attending a new clinic was tough but they made us proud when they came back with a spirit stick and two 1st place and 2nd place ribbons. The cheerleaders supported the football, basketball, and wrestling teams. Being a cheerleader takes a lot of practice time, energy, and good spirit. Lower Right: Mr. David Crowl and band relax after playing for halftime. The Benton Band is very important and sometimes we really don’t realize it. Try to think of a football or a basketball game without a band. The crowd really wouldn’t be able to get in the true spirit of the game. This years band was especially spirited. We received a new band leader this year, Mr. Crowl, and better crowd response. Without the Benton Band the games wouldn’t be the same. Prometheans was first established in 1959 by its sponsor Mr. Larry Hager. The club will soon be celebrating its 30th anniversary. The Prometheans club is made up of a group of students, usually sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in current events and governmental happenings. To become a member, each person is required to pass a current events test to prove that he or she are interested in current events and have some knowledge as to what is hap- pening in the world today. Such information is easily ob- tained by simply reading the newspaper daily and or by watching the news on a regular basis. In order to remain a member of Prometheans, each member must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. in the area of Social Studies and Government Classes. 152 Prometheans Above: Jamey Combs and Alan Stumpf seem to have a new friend while Lonnie Sauter gets ready to chow down. Below: Becky Neal and Connie Ford listen to a comment being made while Lisa Moser and Lonnie Sauter smile for the camera. The Prometheans Club meets on the first Monday of every month. The monthly meet- ings are held in the members homes. Presently, there are 35 members in the club. The club sponsors a dance at the beginning of the year to raise money for yearly expenses. The club also sponsors a child in Brazil. An entrance exam is given to interested non- members in early May of each year. This test is comprised by a committee appointed by the president. After the test is given and new mem- bers are selected a banquet is held to induct new members. Every election year the Prometheans Club conducts a mock election. Club members take roles of the candidates and campaign for votes. An assembly is held and the candidates mem- bers address the issues just as the “real” candi- dates. Following this assembly, the entire stu- dent body votes for their favorite candidates. An election eve party is held at a member house to watch for the election returns. This meeting is most enjoyable. I i netheans 153 ___________________________ Right: All in favor-raise your hand and say “I . The group takes a vote on an issue concerning the Prometheans activities. The Seniors were doctors or nurses, the Juniors were bums. Sophomores were homemakers, and the Freshmen were actors and actresses. Every class carried out the theme well, but the Sophomores prevailed, winning Spirit Week. Seniors and Juniors tied for second place and Freshmen came in last. Spirit Week was an ex- treme success with all four classes participating readily and enjoying the spirit. Top: Dee Stanley and other seniors cheer for the outstanding senior class. Some have big eyes others sad. There are even red noses on some and zits on others. Some faces laugh and others are grim, some are smooth, while others hairy. When you put these to- gether you have a variety of faces- faces of our best friends and others whom we meet daily. We know each others moods by the expression on faces.
