The day was very eventful for all since it was full of happiness for some and tears of sadness for others. Many were faced by the thought of leaving their friends and beginning their life on their own. This day was a very memorable day in the eyes of many, and unforget- table for all. Thanks to the skills of the students, whether they sang, danced, acted, di- rected, or were on any of the various crews, they cooperated and combined to produce a highly entertaining show. The variety show gives students the chance to be in the spotlight, raise money for the school, and display talents their peers might not know they possess. It’s a learning experience for all who participate and also a rewarding one. It provides a cre- ative outlet for students who enjoy the field of entertainment and stage and hopefully creates fond memories of Benton. National Honor Society has been a tradition at Benton for 59 years. To be selected as a member of N.H.S. you must do service projects around school and the community. You have to have 8 points in 4 different categories by your Senior year, must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and pass through a panel of teachers. Once you have been inducted you must perform a service project for the entire year. The N.H.S. society also does a lot of fun projects. N.H.S. u Fike and Reece Reign Anita Fike and Sonny Reece were elected Mr. and Miss Benton Spring. Anita’s court included Marti Nurski, Amy Harrison, Bil- lie Davis, Shelly Barber, and Jack- ie Horn. King candidates were Pat Ezzell, Zack Ezzell, Danny Lentz, Jerry Edson and Jeff Sparks. The coronation assembly was held in the Pop Springer Gymnasium. A boy and girl fall in love, go with each other through the high school years, and depart company when those days are over. In years to come they look back and re- member their high school ac- complishments and the one for- ever known as their high school sweetheart. This is what the sweetheart dance, held every year around valentines day,is all about. It gives couples a chance to be together, with their friends, and have a good time dancing. It provides an in- terlude from the regular date of going to the movies or out to eat. At the sweetheart dance love is the rule and romance the only sure thing. Above left: Donnie Tabor goes up on stage to request a song from the disc jockey. Above: Mr. Larry Hager collecta Chris Tabor’s money and gives him his change and a ticket in return. Above right: Mr.John Foley admits students into the Sweetheart Dance at the door. At the monthly meetings the group discusses current events, both of lo- cal and international interest. The club kicks off each new school year with a pic- nic and also holds a picnic in the spring to induct new members. Officers for the new year are announced at this time. The 1985- 1986 officers are president Jackie Horn, vice presidnt Chris Hughes, parliamentar- ian Jerry Edson and secretary LeAnn Neal. The whole group likes to get in on the fun of “pigging out”. Terrorism is a favorite topic of the club, as Chris Brant demonstrates. Even when its time to eat people are still trying to get their say in the discussion. Prometheans Awards of Excellence Each year the awards assembly is held to recognize those stu- dents who are deserving awards. The top ten seniors of the year are introduced and are presented with scholarships that they have applied for and won. It is a proud moment for all who have won awards and the parents of students who attend. It started off with the introduction of the batallion staff from Benton, La- fayette and Centeral High School, who were each escorted in. Then after the introductions the three batallions staff and escorts were given the first dance. The evening continued with dancing and a good time for all. Left: Col. During the all night event, participants got to be involved with many various activities including, watching movies, playing volleyball, basketball, swimming and gambling. As for the gambling participants they were given play money at the beginning of the night and they could use it to play bingo, roulette, etc. The next morning an auction was held, and with the money which participants won they could buy various items. Although there were many activities, the main event was a good time for all. Competition Of Knowledge The History Bowl is a competition of knowledge between the three city high schools, Benton, Lafayette, Central. The questions are based on history from all periods of times. Mrs. Bur- meister was the coach of the Benton team. She is a social studies teacher here at Ben- ton. The History Bowl is played in 6 rounds with each high school competing twice. Jerry Edson maintains clear thought and concentrates on a question. Patt Ezzell looks to one of his partners for an answer to a question. The Benton History Bowl squad included Rob James. The 1986 book contained the spring activities of 1985, now the yearbook is a February to February book. The staff has improved their knowledge by attending workshops and have tried to produce a much more in depth book that everyone can enjoy and be a part of. The staff wants to continue improving so that our patrons can have a better book. The yearbook party was expanded to a yearbook party and dance with a Hawaiian theme. Every- one had a wonderful time and another is scheduled to distribute books at the end of the year. Above right: Mr. Hager gives a look of relief as the yearbook party starts. A Future Filled With Excitement and Learning 40 Seniors Honica Provin Forrest Schubert Lori Sherlock Darla Rhodes Steven Shannon Christine Silvey Wendy Rice ('aria Sharp Heather Silvey Matthew Romeslnirg Andy Shea Renee Silvey Vicki School Jason Shelkop ('indy Singleton When these seniors were freshmen, they displayed red-and- white and became full pledged Benton Cardinals by being 1 during Spirit Week. These seniors were the last class to participate in the Powder Puff games. Over all they took second their fresh- man year. The class of “87” has been very active in sports, pon poms, cheerleading, and just regular class room duties. But now after the prom dresses are put away and the athletic equipment is hung up, what’s the next step for these graduating seniors? Many seniors plan to attend Missouri Western, others find colleges away from home, and a few vocational schools seem attracive. Marriage or getting a job is what some will end up doing. When graduation comes along, a lot of seniors will say, “I’m so glad its finally over!”, but are they really glad? Or do they not want anyone to know their true feelings about leaving Benton High? Seniors will celebrate their accomplishement of getting their diplomas, but underneath the happiness there is an empty feeling. Questions like, “Will I still be close to my friends after graduating and how different life is out side the walls of Benton”, will be thought of. All the memo- ries of the past years, good and bad. Some seniors will admit they don’t want to leave, but others will remain silent. Being a senior has its ups and downs. But now its all over, at least it is the end of a new beginning. The yearbook staff members give up one hour each school day in order to design and draw spreads and write copy for each page that is assigned to them. Every page in the yearbook is cre- ated entirely by a student with the aid and supervision of Mr. Larry Hager, who has been involved with the yearbook for many years. At the beginning of the year the staff is given a budget by the school, to create an appropriate book. The goal of the yearbook is to first, create an enjoyable book and second, make a profit in order to construct an even better book the following year. Although there’s a lot of work involved in putting together the yearbook, it brings great satisfac- tion to all those involved when they see the completed product. The yearbook is truly an exten- sion of the student body and of the year it represents. Mona Long, yearbook editor and photographer, waits for just the right moment to snap a picture of someone. A brief second that brings us sorrow, pain and suffering of the mind. But we mus remember the joy that was given, be- fore - before it all fell apart. And the love we shared will be with us always, all the days of our lives and forever. They were and are a part of us that no one can take away. Their love will be in our hearts forever. But we must go on, so that when we leave this life, our friends will re- member the love we held together that time cannot surpass. In loving memory of Angela E. The new facility is very modern but needs updated equipment for the new technical programs. Although the students are not fully trained they will meet the standards for employment when they can achieve the work experience needed. A problem that the school faces today is decreasing enrollment. High School students are being forced to take more academic subjects and as a result, enrollment is going down in technical areas as well as the fine arts. Some of the areas of study include building trades with on site experience, autobody repair, auto service mechaincs, computer aided drafting, agri mechanics, machine shop, welding, health occupation training, electronics, computer data processing, refrigation, heating air conditioning. To help with the highly technical nature of many training program materials, individualized instruction is available to students as well as reading and math assistance. Mr. Stephen helps Terry Elam while Mar- tin Brickman looks on. “Hey I know you. Kevin Caw seems to say as he lakes a break from autobody class. Mike Distafino helps a fellow student in auto mechanics. Glenn Poster is anxious to get to work on his car. Tory Schoof works hard in business class. 182 Hillyards Planning a course of study for high school can often determine a student’s future direction. Although an occupational choice is not an easy, or even necessary decision to make during the high school years, it is important that students have some idea of what they would like to do after graduation. Whether he or she decides to enter the working world immediately, or to continue education, a saleable skill is vital in today’s highly competitive career environment. With proper planning and preparation, a vocational program at Hillyard can help solve a student’s career dilemmas. Through this program, junior and senior students come to Hillyard, each day for three hours, to acquire the knowledge they need to obtain gainful employment or to continue education and training in their chosen field. Time moves forever for- ward as the young become the future and the hope for every tomorrow that is yet to come. A rushing tide of indepen- dence approaches some and advance- ment comes to others, but all mature and grow. All follow their own destiny, each different and unknown. Only one thing is certain. When time moves pain- fully swifter than before, we will all look back and remember the way we were. 188 Yearbook Staff P5TENS
