DEDICATION Miss Ruth Campbell What do you remember about your eighth grade year in school? If you spent it at Benton, you are certain to recall learn- ing history from Miss Ruth Campbell. Every year she eases new students into the stream of life at Benton with infinite understanding and patience. Before they quite know it she has familiarized them with office procedure and assembly schedules, and soon eighth graders are seen singing the school song as proudly as any senior. When Miss Campbell's students become freshmen, they are not forgotten; she is always ready with a friendly greeting or compli- ment as they pass in the hall. If a former pupil has problems in his classes or needs help in a research project, he knows that Miss Campbell will be happy to aid him. Her continuing interest in us is gratefully appreciated. Yes, she is dear to the hearts of all Bentonites, and that is why we dedicate this book to her. 3

LEGEND OF WAHWAHLANAWAH The forest sounds sing a glad song to a soul wild and free. Soon--there! Through the leafy boughs see a glimpse of-- Wahwahlanawah! That king of hills. The weathered shoulders stiffen, the white head proud. Arise, O soul, to travel the pathways of light to everlasting happiness. These beams are the Road to Paradise. --Gail Smith In ancient times, the plains Indians would gather each year for a general religious parley. Whitemen later called the meeting place King Hill. To the Indians it was sacred. No other place was as near to their Happy Hunting Grounds. Each evening, trails of light rested on this hill as the sun god's canoe traveled toward the horizon. Spirits of the dead then arose and traveled up the last beams on the Road to Paradise. 2
