WAHWAHLANAWAH 1965 “MIRROR IMAGES” May this Wahwahlanawah mirror wish for you happiness and fond memories of this year. Let it reflect the joy and exuberance of carefree and busy days. Let it be as Wahwahlanawah was for the early Indians-- a symbol of that loved and longed for, a beginning. LEGEND OF WAHWAHLANAWAH The forest sounds sing a glad song to a soul wild and free. Soon--there! Through the leafy boughs see a glimpse of-- Wahwahlanawah! That king of hills. The weathered shoulders stiffen, the white head proud. Arise, O soul, to travel the pathways of light to everlasting happiness. These beams are the Road to Paradise. --Gail Smith In ancient times, the plains Indians would gather each year for a general religious parley. Whitemen later called the meeting place King Hill. To the Indians it was sacred. No other place was as near to their Happy Hunting Grounds. Each evening, trails of light rested on this hill as the sun god's canoe traveled toward the horizon. Spirits of the dead then arose and traveled up the last beams on the Road to Paradise. 2 DEDICATION Miss Ruth Campbell What do you remember about your eighth grade year in school? If you spent it at Benton, you are certain to recall learn- ing history from Miss Ruth Campbell. Every year she eases new students into the stream of life at Benton with infinite understanding and patience. Before they quite know it she has familiarized them with office procedure and assembly schedules, and soon eighth graders are seen singing the school song as proudly as any senior. When Miss Campbell's students become freshmen, they are not forgotten; she is always ready with a friendly greeting or compli- ment as they pass in the hall. If a former pupil has problems in his classes or needs help in a research project, he knows that Miss Campbell will be happy to aid him. Her continuing interest in us is gratefully appreciated. Yes, she is dear to the hearts of all Bentonites, and that is why we dedicate this book to her. 3 Linda Baker Campaign manager: Terry McKee Judy Branson Campaign manager: Jim Murphy Nancy Butcher Campaign manager: Bill Roach Roberta Crockett Campaign manager: Barri Hodgin Unaware of her good fortune, Sheila rode past the crowd. Perhaps the highest goal and most coveted honor a high school student could possibly ob- tain is membership into the National Honor Society. Qualifications for becoming a mem- ber are based on four standards: a high scholas- tic record, service to the school, the abil- ity to lead, and a good character. Two worth-while projects which this or- ganization has been active in creating this past year are making of the new stoles to be used in their spring induction, and a special study hall set up to help those students who are having difficulty in some certain subject. Current members of the National Honor Society. Ray Belcher, President, presides over a regular monthly meeting of the National Honor Society. CHEERLEADERS I • |l - ■ — - - Our six pretty varsity cheerleaders Pep and enthusiasm. That's what these split-jumping girls brought to our games. Here they are shown at the pep club picnic. 32 line up in front of Benton. Practice and exercise bring sore muscles. After an afternoon of hard work, the girls relax and unwind. 33 PEP BAND Who was that making so much noise at the basketball and football games this year? Who were cheering their hearts out for our boys? Who led the school spirit at Benton? The pep club did all of these things and more. All pep club members will remember those bus trips to Maryville and Savannah in the football and basketball seasons and the great times we had. And the thrilling games in our gym, the auditorium, and at the tournaments will live in our memories. The pep club this year has been a large and enthusiastic one. Sponsored by Mrs. Janeen Burnham, Miss Betty Bruns, Miss Sue Notthouse, and Miss Sarah Billingsley, it has been an active organization. Above all, the girls had fun while, at the same time, reflecting the school spirit and representing the pride all Bentonites feel in their school. Carol Ezzell, president of pep club, presided at all meet- ings and was responsible for a smooth-running organiza- tion. The Benton cheering section poses at Noyes Field where they urged the football team on to victory. 34 Several new members look at a sign welcoming them into pep club and de- noting its main purpose. Every year, the pep club picnic is held in Hyde Park prior to the beginning of school for both new and old members. At our own Springer Gymnasium the girls yelled for many thrilling games. An exciting moment touches off wild cheering and applause as Benton beats Trenton. 35 VARSITY FRONT ROW L to R: Randy Hodgin (Mgr.), George Deibert (co-capt.), Bill McLaughlin, Arvin Cruse (co- capt.), Bob Dilla, Danny Powers (Mgr.). SOPHOMORE CLASS SHOTS In your heart you know he's right. Respect to the flag is respect to your country. Pam Taylor, freshman class treasurer; Dianna Hudson, secretary; Doug Baldwin, president; Mr. Modis, chairman; and Lonnie Milbourn, vice president. Class presidents are automatically members of Student Council and take part in all Council ac- tivities. Responsibilities of holding a class office are heavy, but few people pause to reflect upon just how much effort goes into carrying out the duties brought on by these responsibilities. From the eighth grade through the jun- ior year, officers are busy raising money for the best prom this school has ever held. This requires a lot of money, which could not be collected without the ever- present aid of the class spon- sors. The most important of the numerous duties a class sponsor performs is being available and ready with wise suggestions each time he is needed. Many times the ex- perienced advice of a con- scientious and interested sponsor has pulled a class out of a seemingly hopeless situation. Each class is as- signed sponsors in its first year at Benton. They remain inseparable until that class graduates. These sponsors are assigned another class the following year to guide and befriend through the next four years. Class officers participate in cheerleading as well as many other activities. Phyllis Corwin, eighth grade vice president; Miss Campbell, chairman, Debbie Peays, president; and Nancy Giseburt, sec- retary-treasurer. 90 CLASS OFFICERS AND SPONSORS Elaine Hughs, senior class secretary; Bill McLaughlin, president; Mr. Burri, chairman; Steve Kullbom, vice president, and Nancy Butcher, treasurer. Those who guide the juniors are: Mrs. Travis, Mr. Cun- ning, Mrs. Hawks, Mr. Saun- ders, Mrs. Willis, and Mrs. Vaughan. The sophomores are led by: Mr. Hager, Mr. Brandt, Mrs. Yeary, Mr. Jen- sen, Mrs. Ball, and Miss Jones. Thedinga Our vice-principal, Mr. Thedinga, has an understanding attitude and a kind smile which has helped many a student to see and benefit from his mistakes. He also finds time in his busy day to head the athletic department and to serve as Dean of Boys. Yes, without men like Mr. Thedinga, fully dedicated to their jobs, the smooth functioning of our school system would be impossible. Mr. T. plays Mr. B. OUR DEAN OF GIRLS Mrs. Ruth Giddens I've got a headache, I feel sick. How often have these phrases been heard? Yet Mrs. Giddens always meets them with the same understanding smile and kind words. She always finds time in her busy schedule to listen to the problems of some troubled student. Mrs. Giddens is one of the bright spots in our daily school life. no MARY BALL B.S. As students we owe a great debt to those dedi- cated men and women who make our system of edu- cation work so well. These teachers take us as immature individuals and mold us into thinking young men and women,. With great patience they help us to see our every mistake. As we emerge and see ourselves in the mirror of life, we possibly are seeing some of the fine traits instilled in us by the unceasing labor of our loyal, understanding teachers. Yes we owe these people a great debt of gratitude and we hereby recognize them. FACULTY BETTY JO BRUNS B.S. RUTH CAMPBELL A.B., M.A. FACULTY CHARLES BURRI B.S., M.E.
