Dean Jensen Pwciicalb ' The aim of the home economics department is to teach young girls the rudiments of good homemaking. First year home ec . begins by cooking simple dishes and sewing simple items of apparel. With each additional year the cooking and sewing become increasingly diffi- cult. Included in the schedule of projects are the study of color and fabric and the study of furniture and home decoration. The girls also learn the seven basic foods needed in a balanced diet and how to plan menus. After a girl has finished this course, she is well on her way to being an educated citizen of her community and an excellent homemaker. 17 OW The music department has more students participating in music than ever before--the concertchoir reaching a peak of 110 members. The music this year is new and different, ranging from spirituals and hymns to swinging pieces by both the choirs and the band. The Concert choir has sung many concerts this year, some of them were a vesper service at the First Christian Church at Christmas time, a concert at the Southside Rotary Club, and a television appearance. Here they learn to operate the various types of business equipment. Aside from teaching the every day business regulations the students are taught personal traits for the business world. Aren't we' out to help youths to stay physically fit as Well as mentally fit. Our coaches use the argument that the body is as important as our minds. While our edu- cators say that the mind is much more important. We the people, if we exercise a little common sense, will see that the body and the mind are equally important. Can a person with the ability to participate in athletics also have a high intelligence rating? Yes! This can be proven each and every day, both in our school and in others . ...--- ,X p Gerry Smith--B.S. ...WwBuilcL R.O.T.C . encourages self discipline, neatness, and courteousness. It instills in the person a great respect for our nation. R .O.T.C . is the most talked about, worried about course in school. R.O.T.C. is a good basic introduction into the military services . It covers everything from first aid to the trigger housing group of many rifles. From shining shoes to firing on the range. Boysuare required to pass at least one year of R .O.T.C . in high school before they graduate. It is probably one of the best classes in which one can excell far above others. Respect, neatness, and discipline are the three staples of R .O .T.C. It will encourage self advancement with goals and accomplishments at the top. 18
