Tl1egTeaclvUsta ' The language department is comprised of the Latin and Spanish classes, both of which are offered for at least two years' study CSpanish III is offeredj . The first year of Latin provides the student with basic grammar, vocabulary, and knowledge of the language. In the second year, the emphasis is on translation From the translations, students gain a historical knowledge of Roman and Greek culture. Spanish I also provides basic knowledge and grammar. Spanish Il continues with grammar and also provides for more reading and conversation. The study of Spanish not only gives a speaking, writing, and reading knowledge of the language, but also fosters an interest in Spanish-speaking countries . Dean Jensen Pwciicalb ' The aim of the home economics department is to teach young girls the rudiments of good homemaking. First year home ec . begins by cooking simple dishes and sewing simple items of apparel. With each additional year the cooking and sewing become increasingly diffi- cult. Included in the schedule of projects are the study of color and fabric and the study of furniture and home decoration. The girls also learn the seven basic foods needed in a balanced diet and how to plan menus. After a girl has finished this course, she is well on her way to being an educated citizen of her community and an excellent homemaker. 17 OW The music department has more students participating in music than ever before--the concertchoir reaching a peak of 110 members. The music this year is new and different, ranging from spirituals and hymns to swinging pieces by both the choirs and the band. The Concert choir has sung many concerts this year, some of them were a vesper service at the First Christian Church at Christmas time, a concert at the Southside Rotary Club, and a television appearance. The Benton Singers, chosen by Mr. Duane Cunning from the Concert Choir, have performed also at functions during the past year. 1 Ruth Giddens Chairman, Home Ec. Dept. Evelyn Yeary--B.S.
