We, as students, are greatly indebted to those men and women who make our educational system work so Well. 'As teachers, they accomplish more each day than they would in more days at simpler and better paying jobs. They are concerned for the Welfare of each student as most. people are for their own family. Surely, these people deserve some recognition. Let us use this space to say a great many thanks for a jobuwell done. Let us hope that our own children will have teachers with such devotion to their charges. MPM Mis. Ruth Giddens, Dean of girls for the second consecutive year, is well qualified for her position. Besides holding Master of Education and Bachelor of Science degrees, she possesses that that certain knack for understanding students. No matter what size the problem, Mrs. Giddens seems to have an effective solution. Mrs. Ruth Giddens, Dean of girls, checker of leave permits, teacher of home economics, healer of cut fingers, can be found serving the students of Benton at any hour, and many times after hours. All her many' duties are carried out efficiently with the same cool, calm, kind attitude. A busy desk, a busy woman, --the pulse of Benton. 8 Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Coleman plan for future education. Mr. R. V. Blomfield St . joseph's Board of Education is a hard-Working organization which receives little recognition. This council g consists of six persons who are chosen by their party and y serve Without pay. No changes are made in our school system unless they have been approved by the Board. Meetings are held regularly once each month and Whenever the occasion demands. The board has the authority to make all the important decisions and policies and to call special elections for school levies. 1903--1963 Mis. John Wyeth, Mr. D. W. Hopkins, Mr. G. I. They learn to analyze facts and learn to read newspapers, magazines and maps . Students learn to be either a follower or a leader in committee Work or in a group discussion or in a debate. But most of all, they learn to understand--to understand Why people of different backgrounds and cultures believe differently and to understand what part minority groups play in our government and society. Helen Nelson, our school nurse, is shown in the process of checking a student's eyes. i . . .TofUseftlwPfwseub The mathematics curriculum has been planned with the general objectives--to provide a well- balanced course for students of varying abilities. To modernize courses by introducing new material, and to recognize the significance of the expanded applications of mathe- matics. Specifically, the program attempts to develop an understanding of the basic structure of mathematics, provides for the acquisition of manipulative skills and the oppor- tunity to apply these skills, and strives to promote an appreciation of mathematics as a part of general education and not solely a vocational or Tool subject. This arrangement cuts down on quantity but it improves quality. i Teachers also call upon outside aids such as the LITERARY CAVALCADE, PRACTICAL ENGLISH, and the READERS' DIGEST. Members of our English department attended an English conference at Lawrence, Kansas, this' October for the third consecutive year. The general purpose of the English department is to raise the level of writing and speaking in all school activities and to promote interest in the important fields of modern communication. The first year of Latin provides the student with basic grammar, vocabulary, and knowledge of the language. In the second year, the emphasis is on translation From the translations, students gain a historical knowledge of Roman and Greek culture. Spanish I also provides basic knowledge and grammar. Spanish Il continues with grammar and also provides for more reading and conversation. The study of Spanish not only gives a speaking, writing, and reading knowledge of the language, but also fosters an interest in Spanish-speaking countries . First year home ec . begins by cooking simple dishes and sewing simple items of apparel. With each additional year the cooking and sewing become increasingly diffi- cult. Included in the schedule of projects are the study of color and fabric and the study of furniture and home decoration. The girls also learn the seven basic foods needed in a balanced diet and how to plan menus. After a girl has finished this course, she is well on her way to being an educated citizen of her community and an excellent homemaker. 17 OW The music department has more students participating in music than ever before--the concertchoir reaching a peak of 110 members. The music this year is new and different, ranging from spirituals and hymns to swinging pieces by both the choirs and the band. The Concert choir has sung many concerts this year, some of them were a vesper service at the First Christian Church at Christmas time, a concert at the Southside Rotary Club, and a television appearance. The Benton Singers, chosen by Mr. Duane Cunning from the Concert Choir, have performed also at functions during the past year. 1 Ruth Giddens Chairman, Home Ec. Dept. Evelyn Yeary--B.S. Aren't we' out to help youths to stay physically fit as Well as mentally fit. Our coaches use the argument that the body is as important as our minds. While our edu- cators say that the mind is much more important. We the people, if we exercise a little common sense, will see that the body and the mind are equally important. Can a person with the ability to participate in athletics also have a high intelligence rating? Yes! This can be proven each and every day, both in our school and in others . ...--- ,X p Gerry Smith--B.S. ...WwBuilcL R.O.T.C . encourages self discipline, neatness, and courteousness. It instills in the person a great respect for our nation. R .O.T.C . is the most talked about, worried about course in school. R.O.T.C. is a good basic introduction into the military services . It covers everything from first aid to the trigger housing group of many rifles. From shining shoes to firing on the range. Boysuare required to pass at least one year of R .O.T.C . in high school before they graduate. It is probably one of the best classes in which one can excell far above others. Respect, neatness, and discipline are the three staples of R .O .T.C. This last year of high school is a time of mixed emotions. It is natural to Want independence and to Want to make our own Way in the World. Graduation is a sad time because We will never see the whole class together again. Old friends Will be parted and scattered throughout the nation, perhaps throughout the World. Some will lead happy and successful livesg others will be far less fortunate. Most of us have started down the roads our lives will take. Some will change those paths, but some will not. The younger high school students may not realize it, but they have a multitude of Wonderful experiences ahead of them, if they keep their feet on the ground. True, it is the most difficult thing in the World for youth to be practical and to plan for the future, but it is necessary. That doesn't' mean that you have to give up all social life and activities, to keep your nose in a book all the time. It does mean that learning should be your first and main purpose in coming to school. Stay on the right path now in youth, and you will go far in life . To make the different departments and activities of Benton run smoothly, students give their time and patience showing much willingness to help in the different school services. The library assistant, who is always there to lend a helping hand, the stage and concession crews who take care of the behind the scenes activity, the projectionists who makes it possible for us to learn more, and the rec. room help who work hard to have a place for us to relax and enjoy the social aspects as well. Each student shows loyalty, to help make Benton a better school. We have come a long way in education since its beginnings in the one room school. Now we have educational films to give us a more accurate view of the past, the present, and the future. -, 53 Remember how good that hot coffee or that hotdog tasted at the football games? Mr. Mar-rs was the advisor in charge. He was assisted by Joan Burnside, Carol Wineinger, Mary Kizor, Adella Bierbaum, Mary Wells, Phyllis Cook, chairman, and.Pat Washington. The library is brightened by our pretty library assistants. It almost makes you want to read more. Members of the dramatics class prepare , their own props for the successful staging of The Other Wise Man, a play which was enjoyed by everyone at Benton. During the lunch hour Richard Wright, Mike Martin, and Olin Hammer find time to collect the entrance fee from the many students who enter the Aed Dirds Den each day. There are too few people in the world willing to devote their entire lives to the services of others . School service shows the quality of the students and the quality of those individuals as Americans. Those who are not willing perform even the smallest service in their school will never serve the community and will be most unwilling to serve their country. Those who willingly serve their school most likely will be those who gladly lay down their lives for their great country. Our I country would be great indeed if we had more people willing to serve . Let us pay tribute tr those who first made our country great by challenging every student to be like those Ameri- cans, who were wil1ing to serve. 5 Aww I 'S Sophomores Sherry Bagtcliklglafy Fr:ElT1sH3Bar1bara Juniors Stilwsrtf Qld .no ner' 1 Hn On' Nancy Butcher, Debbie Frakes, Elaine Hughs, Karen an arm O gl ' Onstott, Bill Roach, Ray Belcher, Jerry Chambers, and Sheila Faudere. Tlwpeople Student Council activities help to show Benton students their form of school govern- ment. Five representatives, two alternates and the class president of each class are elected by their classmates each semester. Under the leadership of Dennis Ray the council performed many services. On your first day at Benton you were guided by a Coun- cil member. That paperback book on your desk came from the Council's book store, as did that pennant on your wall at home. You can be proud, knowing that your council donated to the needy more than once during the year. Remember all the fun of the bonfire, and the festive spirit of the dances? We can all agree that the Student Council 9 is the principal service organization at our Dennis Ray School Student Body President Jerry Chambers VICE President S2 Rose Lawhon Treasurer 71 Elaine Hughes Secretary Mr. L. E. Hager ' Adviser Jewell Gould I ' Editor-in-Chief This yearbook is an annual of the student, by the students, and for the students of Benton High School. Pictured on these two pages are the students who did the actual work of producing this annual with the guidance and assistance of the staff's sponsor, Mr. Hager. In the spring of each year new members of the staff are chosen to replace those graduating. New members must maintain a high scholastic average and arrange his schedule so as to have seventh hour free for annual staff work. In the spring when they are chosen they join the staff for the rest of the year in order to learn the ropes . In the summer, work on Bruce Keller . Staff Photographer the annual actually begins. We meet several times before school begins to select the theme, draw up a general plan for the entire book, and to make assignments for working on registration day. As soon as we get the pictures that were taken of the classes, they are processed. This takes several weeks. Every member the staff is always busy for we must have pictures of every important school occasion, the yearbook must haveunity of thought and designg and names and facts must all be accurate . Each member should be able to pzig do any of several things so that the staff will never be at a stand- still for the lack of one member ' 72 Linda Ridge Co-Editor-in-Chief Connie Smith Art Editor Division Pages eww - geeeeue 31611 Onstott Copy Editor Y After planning the work, Jewell works the plans. 1' ' Gail Smith Assistant Art Editor '.' - 5 0 --- I QF' X D Cl:-4-.:v Q Om o mug Q, ,I 9 c-:agp o c gg 3 2-1.6 Q4 Q O X. y , X' E e f l ll l lftga .f . The popular school newspaper which we receive every few weeks, the Bentonian, is published by the journalism class. At the beginning of the school year, the journalism teacher appoints editors, reporters, typists, etc. on the basis of work submitted. The editor-in- chief meets with the page editors to make preliminary plans as to what each issue will contain. The page editors, in turn, assign stories and news features to the reporters. During the course, the students learn much about good journalism. Early this year the class toured the News Press--Gazette to see how a large newspaper functions and to learn how to improve their own publi- cation. Besides rendering a service to their school, these young journalists learn a satisfying and rewarding trade. Without character that comes from meeting With, Working with, and learning to understand other people, We can 't really hope to become mature adults. Character in the make -up of mature adults is necessary for many reasons. It is necessary for true success in work or buriness, in marriage and family relations, and in the community' as a citizen working with his neighbors. Each letter of the Word club represents one important part of character. These are charity, loyalty, unselfishness, and brotherhood. Every club should be a brotherhood.
