Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1962 volume:

EDWARD J. PRAW1TZ Edward J. Prawitz, who was in the photography business in St. Joseph for more than 52 years, died in his home at the age of 77. His residence was at 2720 Sacramento Street. A lifelong resident of St. Joseph, he was the son of the late Louis and Lena Prawitz. He attended the Immaculate Conception parochial school. Mr. Prawitz had been the principal figure in group and indi- vidual pictu re-making in the St. Joseph schools for more than 30 years. He has photographed children of students who posed for him in their own student days. His pictures in school yearbooks run into the thousands. A few years ago he closed his studio in the King Hill building, which was being remodeled. His studio had been in that building since the building of the civic center. Earlier he had a studio at 920 1 2 Frederick Avenue. In World War I days his studio was in the Electric theater building. The Prawitz files contained many outstanding photographs of old Lake Contrary and beauty spots in the St. Joseph area. In December, 1959, Mr. Prawitz became associated with Cyrill R. Bray. His surviving relatives are his wife, Vallene, and a sister, 2 Miss Mollie Prawitz, St. Joseph. Jdedication... vb MISS G. MARION WILSON IF we need counsel on any problem too big to solve by ourselves alone, IT'S comforting to consult her; she is GOOD, wise, and discerning with a personal interest in and concern FOR all of us. BENTON recognizes her sterling qualities, respects her unbiased judgment, and appreciates her loyal devotion to us and to our school. DO we love her? Of course we do. Because of all this, IT is our pleasure to dedicate the 1961- 3 62 Wahwahlanawah to Miss G. Marion Wilson, Dean of Girls. MR. BOWEN MR. LOWELL K. BOWEN Some of the problems that Mr. Bowen has to cope with everyday as administrator of Benton High School, would make any average person throw up his hands in defeat. But, through his wisdom and knowledge, Mr. Bowen does his best to work out the difficulties that enter through the door of his office. His work does not end when the school day or school year ends, but his job keeps him busy after school hours and through the summer planning schedules, working out the instructual program, and making faculty assignments. During the day, he sometimes acts as counselor for those who wish to seek his ad- vice and opinion or approval on certain matters. His job as principal of Benton High School is a never ending one for he is always striving to keep our school the best one he can and trying to keep our best foot forward no matter where we are or what we are doing. For all his time consuming efforts, we the students thank our principal, Mr. Lowell K. Bowen. 14 Our Vice-Principal Always working hard and long, Mr. A. W. Thedinga helps to keep the wheels of Benton turning efficiently. He has a way about him that draws people to him for his counsel and he will advise any one in need of his assistance whenever and wherever he can. Our JVean of, QirU MR. A. W. THEDINGA Miss G. Marion Wilson is no doubt one of the most respected people at Ben- ton. She has won this great respect through the many years of service, hard work, time, and effort that she has put forth for her students. She is a friend to all and her winning, comforting way of handling problems that arise cannot be e- qualed. She never places herself before her pupils and this has made her the wonderful woman that the students of Benton High School look up to with such high regard. Our Counselor Mrs. Betty Tyson, our counselor this year, is a new face to the halls of Ben- ton. She has won the hearts of the faculty and the students through her friendly, heart-warming smile and understanding way. The students that have come in con- tact with her this year will agree that a person can go to her for help and guid- ance and not be turned away. MRS. BETTY TYSON MISS G. Surprise!7 Have you ever wondered just what the teachers and students do to break the mo- notony of their everyday school life when they find they have a few minutes to them- selves. The faculty, as well as the pupils, like to indulge in a little horseplay once in a while. You don't need to think they don't get caught at it either. If you do, just take a look... Many thanks go to everyone who spent time preparing for this big fall event, and special congratulations go to Mr. Duane Cunning and Mrs. Velda Anderson, Directors of the program. Without a doubt, this years festival was one of the biggest and finest that Benton has seen in many years. Under the third year of Mr. Deon Jensen's direction, the band has finally acquired their long-awaited uniforms. Their uniforms are not pictured in this edition, but will appear in the spring supplement. All the students in the band are hard- working and should be commended for their fine work this year. Thedinga lead the class of 1962 to the Baccalaureate services. Rev. Gerry Smith Invocation............................Rev. Paul C. Collins Scripture Reading.....................Rev. W. J. Deckinger Message- LIFE IS QUALITY .... Rev. Gerry D. Smith Mr. Lowell K. Bowen, Miss G. Marion Wilson, and Mr. A. W. Thedinga. God created man as a free moral being, capable of making his own decisions, the Rev. Gerry Smith, pastor of the Hopewell Baptist Church, VVeatherby, Mo., told Benton grad- uates. He explained that God is a spirit, that he will never be seen in orbital flights around the earth. ''This does not mean that God doesn't exist. It means his existence is invisible to the human eye - justas love and hate and joy and jealousy are of a spiritual nature and are invisible. Yet we do not deny there is such a thing as love, but have you ever seen love? No, only acts and evidence of love. Similarly, you cannot see God, only acts and evidence of love. Class of 1962 Commencemen t Mr. A. W. Thedinga and Miss G. M. Wilson. Mr. L. K. Bowen presents a diploma to Maria Del- gado. The aim of education is to put into your heart an altruistic spirit to helpothers, Rabbi Myron Meyer told Benton High School graduates at the fifty-second annual commencement Wednesday, June sixth, 1962. Tonight is commencement, which means you are commencingto live and struggle. You have the world in front of you, but it is a troubled world, he said. I would like to familiarize all of you with the word serendipity, coined by Horace Walpole to mean find- ing valuable treasures not sought for. This is sometimes called getting the breaks, but that is a false, e r r oneo us statement. Serendipity comes only if you are intelligent and alert, ready to accept new challenges . Serendipity will come only through finding new things in old things, such as the discovery of penicillin from mold. MYERS YEARBOOKS INC
