96 Lana and Wally Deasi Diasuf The 1960-61 year at Benton has been one that will long be remembered in the minds and cherished in the hearts of those who attended this school this year. It has been filled with sorrow, joy, and excitement that has never been equaled. The faculty, students, and even the school itself had a share in making this year the great success that it has been. The students who came to Benton for the first time this year, have a lot of fun, work, and new experiences ahead of them. With those leaving to make a place for themselves in the world, will go the feeling that they had lived the best years of their lives and the knowledge that they had taken part in their last football or basketball game, their last assembly program, and for some, the last year at school. Let’s follow Wally and Lana through the annual and relive some of the high points of this year. School St. West bank of the football field SfisUnyen SfruUoaft In honor of Pop Springer, the student body at Benton decided to name our football field “Springer Stadium.” Pop was, for a long time, the head coach here at Benton and he is re- spected and looked up to by all. So here’s to P.B. Springer ... a man never to be forgotten by those who are fortunate enough to know him. West Bleachers East Bleachers 'Dedication, P B SPRINGER Mr. Springer attended Illinois University for one year and received his A.B. at 1 Benton, he taught at Grand Island, allege in Molten. It took him a long time to try to work out this problem that he had come up against, but he is not one to give up. All during his 34 years here, he tried to make his boys and students understand that winning was not all that counted in a game, but also how to accept defeat with the right attitude. Besides athletics. Pop taught commercial courses. His hobbies are fishing and golfing. Although he is an avid sports fan. he does not like hot dogs. Grand Island College in 1915. 'ffytaJl Those students in the eighth and ninth grades are just beginning their life as high school students. They are using these two years to learn just what is expected of them and getting into the swing of things. They often feel out of place in high school at first because the juniors and seniors seem to run everything. They should realize that this is part of the role of the underclassmen and bear in mind the fact that in a few years, they will hold the title of the upperclassmen. TOP ROW: D. Abbott, J. Adams, J. Along with perseverance great That will not shrink when doubts appear. Also you must have patience real And faith in God when days are drear. But when you’ve risen high in life, To honor and perhaps to fame, And when you’ve won the confidence Of those who speak your name How careful then you ought to be To keep the heights that you have gained And never say or do the things By which so many lives are stained. Author Unknown 18 Panc6 ne tt Looking back over high school life, the Class of 61 recalls many highlights their first registration, their gradual adap- tation to high school routine, noisy pep rallies, various victories in sports — especially the ones over Central and North Kansas City in 1960, the proms, and scholastic achievement. Yes, that group of men and women are devoted to the education of tomorrow’s citi- zens. They have taught us to get along with others and have given us the inspiration we need to rise to higher planes where we may better serve our fellow men. To them, and to our loyal administrative staff, we owe a very great debt, our education. Mr. George L. Blackwell, a competent leader in the field of education, shoulders much responsibility as superintendent. With the aid of the Board of Education, he determines pol- icies, regulates personnel, and coordinates activities of the en- tire St. Joseph school system. Helping to lighten Mr. Blackwell’s responsibilities is another competent leader in the field of education. Mr. G. M. Cole- man, who serves as assistant superintendent in charge of in- struction. The Board of Education, a body of well qualified represent- ative citizens, has as its main purpose the securing of the best possible educational advantages for the youth of St. Joseph. With commendable thoroughness, they perform their duties, meeting all problems with enthusiasm, tact, and understand- ing. Back row: Mr. G. L. Blackwell, Mr. R. V. Blomfield, Mr. Fairleigh Enright, Mrs. John Wyeth, Mr. D. W. Hopkins. Front Row: Mr. Dwight Danncn, Mrs. Paul Kncpper, Mr. E. F. Garvey. L. K. Bowen Principal As administrator of Benton High School, Mr. Bowen shoulders many heavy responsibilities. He has held the title of Principal since 1958. He is continually searching for new ideas which will improve our school and serve the students better. His most important responsibility is the super- vision of the instructional program. During the summer, he is kepy busy planning appropriate schedules for the students. This program includes student counseling, faculty assignment and super- vision and continuous evaluation of their prog- ress. He studies the curriculum requirements specified by the State Department of Education and coordinates these requirements with stu- dents’ needs to provide a well rounded program of studies. In addition he is kept busy compiling statistics for complicated reports. Mr. Bowen confers with faculty and student committees, with the PTA, and city and state administrative groups. All of them find him pleasant, efficient, and eager to aid them in any way he can. L. K. BOWEN A. W. THEDINGA A. W. Thedinga Vice-Principal A man of many tasks is our Vice-Principal, Mr. Thedinga. The vice-principal’s job is one of great importance to both the faculty and student body. His main and most important duty is to try to help lighten Mr. Bowen's many responsibilities. In addition, he serves as Dean of Boys. With his seemingly endless patience, he has helped many to a better understand- ing of school life. Not to be forgotten is his direction of the athletic program. Working with the coaches, he purchases equipment, arranges home games, orders the busses, and makes other necessary arrangements. Also, he is the Student Council s]x nsor. With his assistance and direction, the Council promotes student welfare and serves as a link between student and faculty members. Benton is indeed fortunate to have such a hard working administrator. 29 Mr. Thedinga Although he is a very busy person, Mr. A. YV. Thedinga is always willing to help anyone who comes to him. He is a great help to those who recognize the fact that the vice-principal is there to help anyone who comes to him for assistance. Miss Wilson One of the most important people at Benton is the Dean of Girls, Miss G. Marion Wilson. Her time-consuming duties consist of checking on absentees, issuing leave permits, keeping attendance records, counseling girls, and teaching three citizenship classes. Her many responsibilities keep her going at a steady pace. But no matter how busy she is, she is always ready to give advice and encourage- ment when problems arise. Mr. Clark New to Benton this year is Mr. Don Clark, our counselor. He has quickly become popular among both the faculty and students. His many duties include keeping various student records, helping stu- dents arrange their schedules, and sponsoring FTA. He also serves as assistant football coach. 30 VELDA ANDERSON B.S. Winning the Bronze Star Medal was only one way in which he proved that he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those who might have needed it. His deep concern for the welfare of others was a factor that made him a true friend of everyone that knew him. The Reserve Officers Training Corp could not function properly with- out men like Sergeant Thomas. These men show devotion to their country by serving in the army and by helping to mold the character of the youth of this country. 63 “R. o. e 0?Ot4t ‘PtcUoOH FIRST ROW: Harold Stewart, Lawrence Rice, Ronald Reno, Dallace Cordonicr, Bill Maleski, John Decker, Jerry Burns, Howard Walker, Terry McLaughlin. It has always been an outlet for man's emotions. Throughout the ages, music has been undergoing various changes to satisfy the current tastes. It has been said that music is more expressive than speech. Music attempts to create in us the same emotion the composer felt when he wrote the composition.
