Text from Pages 1 - 84 of the 1960 volume:

Wahwahlanawah I960 THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in o yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on the way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost Published by Benton High School St. Joseph, Missouri i Dedication To a friend whose deep underlying feeling has been impressed upon all who have known her. Good fellowship and cheer, kindly deeds, and in- spiration bespeak the good will of her spirit. To a teacher who with sympathy, criticism, and en- couragement has stimulated the many who have come under her influence. Her gentle per- suasiveness has been appreciated by all who have studied in her classes. To one whose style, techniques, temperament, and all pervading integrity have worked together in harmony to keep alive the memory of our school days in Benton High School. During her many years of work with the Wahwahlanawah, she has created a storehouse of lovely pictures that shall bloom upon the walls of memory's room. To this valued friend, thorough teacher, and tireless worker, we dedicate this 1960 Wahwahlana- wah. Vita Finley 3 Administration SCHOOL BOARD. BACK ROW: Mr. G. L. Blackwell, Mr. R. V. Our Principal A Yearbook such as this is a prized possession of most high school pupils and graduates because it is the medium through which many of the fine and interesting experiences of school days are captured and retained. For years to come you who have purchased this book will periodically thumb through its pages with real pleasure, and perhaps a little nostalgia, as you recall the friends and experiences of your high school days. It is my hope that each one of you, as you relive the year 1959-'60 through the pages of this book, may not only experience pleasure, but have a real sense of satisfaction. May it have been a good year, one of worthwhile accomplishment, definite advance toward mental and emotional maturity and one during which worthwhile and more definite goals for the future were formulated and plans made for achieving those goals. 5 Advisors Arend W. Thedinga If you choose to work, you will succeed; if you do not, you will fail. If you neglect your work, you will dislike it; if you do it well, you will enjoy it. If you act like a boor, you will be despised; if you act like a hu- man being, you will be respected. If you spurn wisdom, wise people will spurn you; if you seek wisdom, they will seek you. G. Marion Wilson Mr. A. W. Thedinga, Richard Belcher, Roger Payne, and Dwayne Groshong. Our actions, many times, are born of habit and not of reasoning. Why then, should we not form our habits from clear thinking, for As we think, so shall we be. Life is formed and fashioned of what appears to be unimportant thoughts and actions. These might be good or evil, but whatever they are, they are making us what we are and will be. Every smallest stroke of vice or virtue will leave its never-to-be-forgotten im- pression. Nothing you do will ever be completely wiped out. If you keep building habits, born of thought each hour of the working day, you may safely leave the final result of education and life to itself. No way has been found for making heroism easy, even for the scholar. Labor, iron labor, is for him. The world was created as an audience for him,- the atoms of which it is made are opportunities. — Emerson 6 VELDA ANDERSON B.S. English Music, Books RAYMOND BAKER B.S., M.Ed. C.O.E. Through these groups, we can learn the views and ideas of others. By bringing these ideas together and discussing them as a group we help our communities and our schools. The school organizations are formed to give students a chance to express their thoughts and to contribute their ideas. Or- ganizations such as the student council and Junior Red Cross aid in building better cities in which to live. They try to teach others rules of safety and how to work and get along together as a group in their daily lives. Everyone should make every effort to help these organiza- tions because they are trying to build better and safer places for all American citizens. Organizations are formed to teach us how to get along together in the not too distant future. 36 Nancy Myers Treasurer TOP ROW: Pot Sanderson, Judy Pritchard, Jerry Kush, Dean Bran- son, Pat Ingram, Ronnie Hoskins, Bob Waddell, Gary Bell, Don Sal- cedo, Karen Hiserote, Freddy Bell. Too Late to Classify. We all know how the eighth graders get lest in the school at the first of the year. We accept this, but this year's class, at least a few, are more persistent in their attempts to upset us all. Even in our yearbook, they still seem to have lost their heads so to speak. We give our deepest sympathy to these poor innocents, and hope they will be able to pick up the lost pieces and finish the school year with us. Please excuse their big heads. He immediately begins trading new equipment for broken equipment with the varsity. These are some of the things a student manager is held responsible for: footballs, pads, helmets, jerseys, pants, whistles, and shoestrings. One item of the upmost importance is the keys to the storage room. One scatterbrained manager absent-mindly carried the keys home. Coach Modis was terribly upset. He took sixteen Bufferins. He was even more distressed afterwards. The last half of seventh period is spent answering the cry of the wounded: Bandage this, Bandage my arm, Wrap my big toe, Put tape on my pants. Finally, the man- agers are left alone. As soon as the managers have rested, about a half-second, the freshmen come in from practice. There are more cuts, scratches, and bruises to bandage. Soon the reserves and varsity humbly walk in — klomp klomp klomp. A few people do not think the student managers should earn a letter. However, they really and truly work for it! Tv , sw4PP;%- r a - - r. av' 3 V JSJF 4 « The Plains Indians used to hold a general religious parley each year. Because of this, the Great Spirit set aside a specific area which the Indians called Wahwahlanawah, meaning the Road to Paradise. In years following it was renamed by the whitemen who began settling in this area. They called it King Hill. This region was sacred to everyone. It was a meeting place and the sacred burial grounds for the Indians. No other place on earth was as near the Happy Hunting Grounds as King Hill. Each evening trails of lights crept across the river and rested on the high hill in the east as the Sun God slowly sailed away into the horizon in his great . _ canoe. After he had made his journey to the heavens, the spirits of the dead rose from their graves to travel their way across the wide waters on these pathways of light to enter the kingdom of everlasting happiness. They were on the Road to Paradise. 76
