SPRINGER Pop is undoubtedly the symbol of the best in sportsmanship to hundreds: patrons, alumni, under- graduates. From his daily example they have learned the enduring lessons taught by partici- pation in athletics: how to take victory humbly, to meet defeat serenely, and to carry on with cheerful confidence. Three cheers for Pop! Pop’s first love is track witness his inauguration of the St. Joseph Relays. Even with time out for duck hunting in his new high-powered boat, he is busy all year through in every kind of weather drilling and building a formidable squad of track- sters. (thirty-three) Marilyn, Cardinal queen, is a lovely refutation of that oldie, gentlemen prefer blondes. Her brunette beauty is further enhanced and individualized by a pairj , of gray-blue eyes. Galen Huffman, pole vaulter, set a new 12 ft. record at Tarkio, raised it to 12 ft. 1J4 in. at the Pony Express Conference meet, and climaxed it by soaring to 12 ft. 9J4 in. in the City meet. Jerry Parker also set up some new figures for the 880-yard dash at Liberty. These outstanding performances, equalling or bettering times and distances set by the state association of high school athletics, won for both Huffman and Parker the coveted honor of being placed on the all-state prep track team. Gone, those boys, real gone. But that wasn’t all. Mel Karrle and John Bregin, tennis stars, began by winning all local tennis titles, then capturing the top rating in the No. Kansas City dual, and advancing to the semi-finals in the state meet competition. SHARON WEBB, Relays Queen ‘58 And furthermore, at the St. Joseph Relays, Sharon Webb '59, was crowned queen. Add to that, the Relays were dedicated to Mr. Daffron. retiring Benton principal, with special recognition paid him for his part not only in establishing this popular classic but for his 15 years of active service as one of the promoters. VEQUIST Mr. Vequist, completing his years of classroom service, commands our admiration for his consistent high-quality production. Never condoning inferior work, he has inspired his pupils to do a first-class job. His reward: seeing many of them go on to high positions in the realm of science. Members of the science club, encouraged by their sponsor’s enthusiasm, have found in this extra-class activity golden opportunities to experiment and learn for themselves the wonders and responsibilities of this scientific age. They may come close to blowing themselves up but, while having fun, they learn. (sixty-five) FUTURE HOME MAKERS OF AMERICA A-C: Row Is Mary Ann Atkins.
