THE SEASON IN REVIEW An inexperienced Cardinal eleven, not expected by the forecasters to give their opponente any trouble, did just that. Though they didn’t have much luck at scoring, they were a bunch of fighters who made their ad- versaries step lively to keep ahead. The first display of their spirit was their placing second in the pre-season Jamboree at Noyes Field, September 14. Due to a dearth of upper-class material, Coach Brandt relied on a line composed largely of juniors, a group that worked hard and got and gave a lot of hard knocks in the course of the season. Besides the varsity two other teams had a go at the game under the tutelage of Coaches Yurchak and Modis. (forty-three) BASKETBALL, '56-'57 ALL-SCHOOL SQUAD First: Mgr. THE SEASON’S SCORING Top spot—five wins, one loss—in City League play and third place tie with Central—five and five—in Pony Express Conference games really made the Cardinals headliners for the season. Bill Meyers and Bud Sump- ter came through as top individual scorers; Dave Swyhart ranked third. Meyers went on to make Northwest Missouri all-district. Then the trio also led out on the mythical all-city team, a well-earned additional honor —“the combination with the steady play” read the News-Press citation. Melvin Karrle made the third team; David Colboeh, Dave Cox, and Gary Clifton received honorable mention. Last and most thrilling was Meyers’ election to the All-Conference mythical first team selected by the officials and coaches of P.E.C. Dave Swyhart won a place on the second string in the same category. A Cardinal for “best sustained performance,” Coach Modis! All too seldom recognized, often overlooked or minimized, is what the music groups add to the pleasant atmosphere of assemblies and special programs. Friendly relations with patrons are contributed by the 70-voice choir, its soloists and specialists, at programs before civic organizations. Memorable Easter and Christmas programs, music week observances are their gift to the student body. As for the Harvest Moon festival un- forgettable. The concert band is called on for appearances at parades, notably that of the Apple Blossom fete; It entertains the student body twice yearly, leads the assembly opening exercises, and gives a Patrons’ concert during music week. At football games what enthusiasm the marching band, with the prancing majorettes, arouses! Could we—would we—do without them? (sixty) MAJORETTES Left: Marie Close. (sixty-seven) THE LEGEND OF WAHWAHLANAWAH Station proud of the legend that links the network to the Indian tradition of this region, once again presents the story to its TV audience. The custom of the Plains Indians was to hold a general religious parley each year. For this purpose the Great Spirit had set aside a certain place which the Indians named Wah- wahlanawah, the Road to Paradise, but which in later years white men called King Hill. This locality was sacred to all. Not only was it a meeting place; it was also a burial spot. No other place on earth was quite so near the Happy Hunting Grounds. Each evening as the Sun God in his great canoe slowly sailed away below the horizon, gossamer bands of light sped across the river and came to rest on the high hill to the east. Then rose the spirits of the dead to make their way across the wide waters on these pathways of light, to pursue their last journey by way of the Road to Paradise to the land of eternal happiness.
