Their enthusiasm always at the service of the '49 ers, has done much to make the off-classroom activities of the class a series of outstanding successes. Their ability to plan and execute is evidenced by the fine results achieved in class programs, the junior Prom, and the concessions stand. CONCESSIONS CREW In the open air emporium on the football field you found them--a stout hearted crew dispensing good things to eat and drink-class-spirited seniors whose consistent efforts have raised the sizable fund needed to keep the annual 'out of the red.' Inside, during the basketball season-their sponsors Working right along' with 'them-they kept going with a spirit of ready and cheerful service. They can be proud of the results: the project has been successful. Certainly it is one to earn them the gratitude of the entire class. GRIDSTERS STRIKE GOLD Because Cardinal footballers dug so hard, they struck pay dirt with thoroughly gratifying results during the '48 prospect- ing season. In a nine-game schedule, they won five tilts, although Captain James Claycomb had only six lettermen on call when the season opened. The other five were serving their first year as varsity players. However, sparked by Captain Claycomb, Leon Hinkle, Bill Reynolds and Ji. C. VVood, Pop Springer's boys tore into the opposition and wrestled a creditable percentage of victories from their oppon- ents. Partly for fun, partly for the seasoning held Lafayette to a scoreless tie. The event proved popular, the plan is to make it an annual pre-season affair. The official season was a schedule of nine games with Pony Express Conference and City League rivals. At season's end, Central had taken the scoring honors in t'he P. E. C. and C. B. H. S. topped the City League play. XVhen the mythical teams were announced, Hinkle, back, and Ervin Ristau, guard, made the first eleven. In both Pony Express Conference and City League play the championship bracket belonged to first one and then another of the aspirants 215 upset followed upset. Although Lafay- ette Shamrocks did their most brilliant scoring in years, they lost the League leadership to Christian Brothers, Central took third and Benton sank to fourth place. ln the Conference play Benton looked like a 'sure winner in the early games but by season's end 'had lost by narrow mar- gins sufficient games to rate third spot with Lafayette and Central tied at the top. However the season's totals from fifteen regularly scheduled games would indicate that the basketeers got in a good share of hard licks. They closed play with 9 vic- tories and six defeats. And to quote Pop Springer, that protects the Cardinal basketball record over a period of twenty four years of not losing more games than they have won. Individually Benton players made some fancy records. Bill Reynolds was Benton's leading scorer in the City League with 55 markers to his credit and C. Wfood was almost as good with 30 in the 6 games played. ithirty -ninel N A - A .lf . HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION Twenty-four new members, sixteen seniors and eight juniors, were inducted into the Benton chapter of the National High School Honor Society on April 5 at a special mid-week assemfbly. Mrs. H. 'W. Sandusky, former president of the Board of Education and a Benton patron, gave the address for the service on the subject Know Thyself. Ability, application and ambition are the requisites for attaining the goal cul- minating in membership in the Honor Society, said Mrs. Sandusky. The im- portant thing, she explained, is that the individual recognize his capacities. If he sees 'these are limited, he can make up for it by industrious effort provided he wants to do so and is determined to reach a high scholastic goal. Student members and inductees of the Society contributed the other numbers. A choral reading, Beyond the Horizon, its theme embodying t'he purposes and ideals of the Society, was presented by Joyce Alexander, Norma Barrett, Ne-ll Culver, Pat Pettepier, Norma Spangler and Agnles tie VVright, the second year members of group. Norma Barrett, president, read tie ' ' t e Bible lesson and prayer, administered pledge to the new members and closed the program with appropriate remarks. Special musical numbers included a vocal solo The Ways COxenhamJ by Ca1'OlC Huffman and a clarinet solo Scheherazade fRimsky-KorsakoffJ by Meredith Ray. with Gloria Baker and Pat Pettepier playing the accompaniments. Gloria Baker played several piano numbers during the luncheon hour. Miss Elliott, sponsor of the Society, assisted by Mr. Daffron, had planned the program. Miss Doherty and Society mem- bers ,arranged the luncheon menu and decorations. A BOW The theatrical debut of the Juniors in The Tangled Yarn QDagmar Volaj a three- act comedy presented December 10 under the skilled direction of Miss Doherty, was a high spot of fun for a big audience, a distinguished performance, reflecting credit upon both actors and director. Carole Huffman as Camilla Page carried the exacting leading role with sparkling ability. A young lady with a flair for spontaneous yarns, she involved her apart- ment mates in a dubious conspiracy to claim a prize money cheque which, as struggling young wage earners, t'hey sorely needed. But the attendant risks and narrow escapes kept Dorothy l7Vagers, as her cousin Vivian, and Peggy Shepherd, t'heir pal Cora, in a state of constant alarm. f Entangled too, were Lynn Bush, a bud- ding young autfhor, and Clarence Ca-sebolt, the snappy news gatherer. But their case was not so serious as that of Armond John- son, the contest sponsor, who bestowed his fsxxtyl heart as well as his money 'upon the vivacious Camilla-or was it her grand- mother? The snarled state of affairs, further complicated by Lawrence Bodle's claiming to be her husband was not cleared up until Nancy Vfyrick, as an afflicted Sadie Stringer, denounced him as her ex-spouse. All of these actors managed capably t'he opportunity afforded for clever acting and comic situations. In briefer roles, Twyla Jackson as the landlady and John Graham as her Irish husband were excel- lent. Maxine Shipley was fine as Camillais dismayed but sportsmanlike mother and Bonnie Costin drew laughs as the austere and haughty Mrs. Brand, senior. Ruth Turner was student director, Pete Elo was properties man. Members of the class, assisted by faculty sponsors, managed staging, publicity and ticket sales. Junior girls served as ushers and the school orchestra played between acts. . - - ---- - -V - .. s- H...41sgeesg. ,.t-.,,.-.,,.,Us-. -.... .. . ,, .. . , ' -ftr '-...M.,..:.-:-.'w.'i-:.H:I-ff-age? Result: no backbone, no mind of his own. A guardian? Yes, he got one, rather tough but so provocative that XVilloughby found his feet and stood on them. So Went the plot of The Inner XVilly QBettye Knappj, the three act comedy presented 'by an excellent senior cast to matinee and evening audiences March 24 and 25. Miss Elliott did 'her customary noteworthy job as director, assisted by dates, Marybelle Turner CDorothy Zup- tickjg one of the Marshall twins-was it Trudy QRosemary Drummondj or Janet Q-lane Benightj ?-and Carol Martin CPatty McCoyj gave fine characterizations. There was the school athlete Stanley Clark CBob Davisj and his meek friend Mike CBenny Kidneyj, who just came along 'to be sure everything was done ac- cording to the book. Clark's punch at our hero, which lost him his steady was one of the high spots of the show. The whole added up to an evening of huge entertainment. Tlhree corsages, two taxi-fares, the family car-they were off to the dance. XVilloughby's alter ego dis- appears, the only sign of his existence, a discarded suit of underwear. Beverly jones, student director. Bill Morris, as the harassed Vtfilloughby Adams, and his inner self, LeRoy Allen, carried the heavy mirth-provoking leading roles. VVilloughby's dilemma, a date for the graduation dance, grew more compli- - I cated momentarily as Aunt Hester QViolet Those other items-staging, properties, Grovesj, Aunt Louise fNell Culverj, and Aunt Olga fRosenda Gsellj took over. In their roles as museum pieces these three programs and ticket sales+which con- tribute to a successful performance were looked after by senior committees, assisted were really satisfying, too.
