'x I Permitted to help shape the destinies of a nation, Thomas Hart Benton wrought nobly and wisely. Elected to the national Senate on the first ballot by the first State Legislature X, 1, meeting after Missouri became the twenty-fourth star in Old Glory, he found himself among i those political giants of a stirring era, Webster, Calhoun, Clay. But he was alone in his feeling for the West of which he was a part-the romance of its development. He believed in solid, material things, he was honest, he never lent his name to any speculative or questionable project, he was noble-spirited, and, although his life was a series of great political battles, he required an open foe and .a manly contest. His fearless integrity commanded the respect even of his enemies. His incursions into the enemy's country -'those famous stump speeches up and down the state-were mapped out with his advisors at some central point, perhaps Arrow Rock Tavern, when he came up the river from St, Louis, Fayette, because it was the center of political hatreds, knew his presence and listened often to his oratory. ln St. Ioseph on August 9, 1849, he spoke to a very large concourse of peoplehabout l,5UU according to the letter describing his visit. f Honors came to him, He served on important Senate committees, he Was offered the Ministry to Russia and to France, he was tendered the cabinet portfolio of Secretary of War, Wit home-in Missouri-the curators of the ten-year-old University awarded him the degree NH? Do r of Laws and conferred it at Commencement, August 5, 1847, in the chapel of the NS rst iverjty buildingfthe one whose stately columns still stand on the campus.
