In the War of l812 Benton served as a colonel ot volunteers under General Andrew Iackson. Soon afterwards, he crossed into Missouri and established his home at St. Louis. By publish- ing a newspaper he soon Wrote himself into politics. So when the first state legislature met at a St. Louis hotel, he was elected sena- tor and went' into Congress to stay for thirty years.
