'x I Permitted to help shape the destinies of a nation, Thomas Hart Benton wrought nobly and wisely. Elected to the national Senate on the first ballot by the first State Legislature X, 1, meeting after Missouri became the twenty-fourth star in Old Glory, he found himself among i those political giants of a stirring era, Webster, Calhoun, Clay. But he was alone in his feeling for the West of which he was a part-the romance of its development. He believed in solid, material things, he was honest, he never lent his name to any speculative or questionable project, he was noble-spirited, and, although his life was a series of great political battles, he required an open foe and .a manly contest. His fearless integrity commanded the respect even of his enemies. His incursions into the enemy's country -'those famous stump speeches up and down the state-were mapped out with his advisors at some central point, perhaps Arrow Rock Tavern, when he came up the river from St, Louis, Fayette, because it was the center of political hatreds, knew his presence and listened often to his oratory. ln St. Ioseph on August 9, 1849, he spoke to a very large concourse of peoplehabout l,5UU according to the letter describing his visit. f Honors came to him, He served on important Senate committees, he Was offered the Ministry to Russia and to France, he was tendered the cabinet portfolio of Secretary of War, Wit home-in Missouri-the curators of the ten-year-old University awarded him the degree NH? Do r of Laws and conferred it at Commencement, August 5, 1847, in the chapel of the NS rst iverjty buildingfthe one whose stately columns still stand on the campus. 'lfJ 'mast - Another Miss Benton-the tenth-has come into being at a coronation, breath-taking in its beauty and impressive dignity. This year's slender queen has ruled her kingdom by the might ot her Winsome smile and the power ot her low-pitched voice. Her sweet, gentle manner is a dailyidspir- ation. Her subjects adore her and delight to serve her. Her maids of honor, wee morsels of gaiety and spirit, are equally be- loved. They have endeared themselves to Bentonites by their willing serv- ice to their school, their democratic bearing, their infectious charm. To them, too, the Cardinal dolls his bonnet. At her crowning Miss Benton was attended by pages and trumpeters trom the Iunior High School. These Bentonettes added a considerable and engaging bit to the picturesque occasion. Marty Lou Crockett, ninth grade, Elizabeth La Plant, eighth, and Helen Wollley, seventh, were the pages. Iewell Crouch, Billy Hawken, and Iames Hyde were the trumpeters and standard bearer tor the processional. George Otten, president ot the student body, crowned Miss Benton and presented her with the schools gift, a bracelet. Attendants at the ceremony were Misses Ruby Faye Allen, Iune Cole, Evelyn Tindle, Eugenia Gibbons, Theo Kimber, Dixie lean Hawken, Laverne Pace, Kathryn Petro, and Helen Zembles, Messrs. C. M. Harman, lohn Cross, Milton Thomsen, Herald Martin, Harley Bootman, Ioe Evans, Pete Herceg, Ellis Shoiner, and Bill Gentry. Officers from the R. O. T. C. formed a military guard ot honor about the throne. But the most thrilling fact of the entire football classic was the winning of the City Championship, For the second time in the annals of St. loseph football, a team representing the Bed and White of Benton took the coveted title. In All-city Captain Floyd Reno, the team could have had no better leader either in character or in athletic ability. Pre-season information gave the Cards no better than a fair team but under Coach P. B. Springer's skillful supervision, the Redbirds swept through the first seven games unscored on, dropping only the last two battles of the year. Post-season statistics showed the Cardinals scored 226 points to opponents' 53, losi two and won seven of their schedule. In the season's opener at the Benton stadium a determined Redbird eleven defeated a heavier and favored Excelsior Springs team, 31-0. George Otten and Elmer Barton pro- vided the necessary scoring punch while Captain Reno and Iunior Hoskins stood out on the defensive. Sept. 18. Brinton's head-on plunges were too much for Lafayette and the boys handed them a 19-0 white-washing on the Shamrocks' field. With the Cards' passing attack clicking- Otten throwing and Stevens, Iames and Olmsted receiving-the outcome ot the game was never in doubt. This was not an official city league contest. Sept. 25. Sensational long runs by Otten and Brinton marked the first victory in the city league against Christian Brothers, 25-U. The first half of the game was played in ideal conditions but the teams finished in a pouring rain. Rosenauers playing at tackle and ludson Phipps' at guard were the bright spots in the Cardinal line. Oct. 18. A blocked kick by Floyd Reno behind the goal line netted Benton's first 2 points. A pass, Otten to Olmsted, late in the fourth quarter was good for fifteen yards and a touchdown. Otten's place kick split the uprights to end the scoring for the day. One of the largest crowds of the season witnessed Benton's victory over their traditional rivals. Oct. 23, Playing under lights for the first time this season the Redbirds romped over Cameron, 60 to 0, running up the largest score of the season. Brinton and Otten each scored three touchdowns while Evans, Meier, and Olmsted crossed the goal line once. Claassen and ltosenauer played a good defensive game on the line. Oct. 29. Outstanding player of the 26-U victory at Trenton was the elusive Wilbur Meier, junior halfback, who scored the first three touchdowns. lack Brinton continuing his slashing line bucks made nice gains and went over for the fourth touchdown.
