IPuge Sixleeul FOOTBALL At Trenton, the Bentonites seemed to lack what it takes to get the ball across the line. They made more yardage than the Bulldogs, but neither team succeeded in scoring. Evans, playing his first var- sity game, did some nice ball playing. November 6. The Cards and Sharnrocks, on even te rm s throughout most of the game, did some thrilling ball playing on the Lafayette field for a Benton win, 13-6. In the third quarter, Simpson, fleet-footed Shamrock, ran forty-two yards for a touchdown. Otten threw a thirty-six-yard pass into the waiting arms of Pax- son, who ran the remaining five yards for a touch- down. Otten made the extra point. In the last quarter, a pass meant for Slaybaugh was inter- cepted by Paxson, who ran through the entire Shamrock team for a score. The point tailed. The whole Cardinal team played brilliant ball with Capt. Paxson standing a shade above his team- mates. November ll. The victorious record of the King City Wildcats was marred 32-U when they visited Benton. ln the opening quarter, a pass, Otten to Paxson, scored a goal. Another, Paxson to McCamy, accounted for further leads, long runs by Shipman and Paxson got two more. November 14. The Falls City Tigers successfully defended their last season victory by winning 7-6 on the Benton field The game, close and exciting throughout, was brilliantly played. Bloom Was outstanding, Buczek, at quarterback, called signals in a profes- sional manner. November 21. Coaches of the city unanimously chose Capt. Paxson for a right halfback position on the mythical all-city team. Bob Burnett placed as right guard. Floyd Beno was awarded center on the second team. Honorable mentions included Dryden, tackle, Willeman and Shipman, halfbacks. Reno will captain the 1937 squad. Fans always feel special interest in the city league ratings. FOOTBALL The Cardinal gridiron attracted considerable at- tention this season from players and spectators alike. A fine squad of yearlings practiced daily with the veterans, an enthusiastic student body wit- nessed the games, most of which were played in ideal weather. Everyone admired the spirit Captain Donald Paxson displayed in his own right and suc- ceeded in arousing in his teammates. The season opened at Excelsior Springs. Because the Cardinals lacked experience and a pass defense, they lost to Excelsior, 7-0. Capt. Paxson and Floyd Beno made the best showing. September 17. The first home game was with C, B. H. S. and was again a defeat, 6-0, although the boys staged a real tussle. Burnett, McComb, and Thomsen fur- nished great power behind the line. September 26. The North Kansas City game was a different story. Capt. Paxson caught the ball on the opening kick- off and advanced it from his own ten-yard line through the entire field for a touchdown. George Otten kicked the extra pointy then scored a second touchdown and kicked the point in the fourth quar- ter. Final score: Benton, l4g North K. C., 0.' Bos- well, Willeman, Dryden, and McComb did outstand- ing work. October 2. The return game with C. B. H. S., played on the Eagles' field was a scoreless tie, but showed good going for a team doped to lose. Olmsted displayed promise in his ability to snag passes and to take out his man. October 17. St. Ioseph Central, playing on its own field, had little trouble in taking a 20-0 victory from the Ben- ton boys. The home team was clearly outplayed, Reno and Burnett did good work. October 24. The visiting Maryville Spoofhounds were defeated 13-0 when the Cardinals' line held like a stone wall against the upstaters' attacks. Capt. Paxson ran Bl yards for a goal and made the extra point. Linden- smith, Walpole, McCamy, Iames, and Shipman, showing real' power, contributed greatly to the vic- tory. October 30.
