A fine squad of yearlings practiced daily with the veterans, an enthusiastic student body wit- nessed the games, most of which were played in ideal weather. Everyone admired the spirit Captain Donald Paxson displayed in his own right and suc- ceeded in arousing in his teammates. The season opened at Excelsior Springs. Because the Cardinals lacked experience and a pass defense, they lost to Excelsior, 7-0. Capt. Paxson and Floyd Beno made the best showing. September 17. The first home game was with C, B. H. S. and was again a defeat, 6-0, although the boys staged a real tussle. Burnett, McComb, and Thomsen fur- nished great power behind the line. September 26. The North Kansas City game was a different story. Capt. Paxson caught the ball on the opening kick- off and advanced it from his own ten-yard line through the entire field for a touchdown. George Otten kicked the extra pointy then scored a second touchdown and kicked the point in the fourth quar- ter. Final score: Benton, l4g North K. C., 0.' Bos- well, Willeman, Dryden, and McComb did outstand- ing work. October 2. The return game with C. B. H. S., played on the Eagles' field was a scoreless tie, but showed good going for a team doped to lose. Olmsted displayed promise in his ability to snag passes and to take out his man. October 17. St. Ioseph Central, playing on its own field, had little trouble in taking a 20-0 victory from the Ben- ton boys. The home team was clearly outplayed, Reno and Burnett did good work. October 24. The visiting Maryville Spoofhounds were defeated 13-0 when the Cardinals' line held like a stone wall against the upstaters' attacks. Capt. Paxson ran Bl yards for a goal and made the extra point. Linden- smith, Walpole, McCamy, Iames, and Shipman, showing real' power, contributed greatly to the vic- tory. October 30. LETTEHMEN Often Olmsted fumes Buczek McComb Lindensmith Bloom Willemcm Reno lPuge Fiitssnl IPuge Sixleeul FOOTBALL At Trenton, the Bentonites seemed to lack what it takes to get the ball across the line. They made more yardage than the Bulldogs, but neither team succeeded in scoring. Evans, playing his first var- sity game, did some nice ball playing. November 6. The Cards and Sharnrocks, on even te rm s throughout most of the game, did some thrilling ball playing on the Lafayette field for a Benton win, 13-6. In the third quarter, Simpson, fleet-footed Shamrock, ran forty-two yards for a touchdown. Otten threw a thirty-six-yard pass into the waiting arms of Pax- son, who ran the remaining five yards for a touch- down. Otten made the extra point. In the last quarter, a pass meant for Slaybaugh was inter- cepted by Paxson, who ran through the entire Shamrock team for a score. The point tailed. The whole Cardinal team played brilliant ball with Capt. Paxson standing a shade above his team- mates. November ll. The victorious record of the King City Wildcats was marred 32-U when they visited Benton. ln the opening quarter, a pass, Otten to Paxson, scored a goal. Another, Paxson to McCamy, accounted for further leads, long runs by Shipman and Paxson got two more. November 14. The Falls City Tigers successfully defended their last season victory by winning 7-6 on the Benton field The game, close and exciting throughout, was brilliantly played. Bloom Was outstanding, Buczek, at quarterback, called signals in a profes- sional manner. November 21. Coaches of the city unanimously chose Capt. Paxson for a right halfback position on the mythical all-city team. Bob Burnett placed as right guard. Floyd Beno was awarded center on the second team. Honorable mentions included Dryden, tackle, Willeman and Shipman, halfbacks. Reno will captain the 1937 squad. Fans always feel special interest in the city league ratings. '- ::'.1 ' SPONSOR-MAIOR MISS CHARLOTTE KIENLEN I-IONORAHY SPONSOR MAIOH 1937 Company G, Cardinal R. O. T. C. unit, has many reasons for pride this year. The most attractive one is, of course, Miss Kienlen, sponsor-major, that diminutive person Whose graces are numerous enough to meet the require- ments set by even the most exacting member oi the Army The reorganization of the unit into three platoons has contributed much spirit and snap to the company. Added opportunity for manual study means a better informed membership, increased information results in a more com- pletely military turnout. Nine officers give the final touch of smartness. Honor rating among the eight states of the Seventh Corps Area came to Benton's company following inspection by U. S. Army officers last spring. By setting a new city record this year of 1,643 pointsin a possible 2,UUO, the rifle team established itself as city champion for the sixth consecutive year. Gabriel Skitek was high- point man, scoring 175 of a possible 200. IPGQS Twenty-onel R. O. T. C. IPage Twenty-twol R. O. T. C. BASKETBALL, 1937 Something new in city league circles was tried out this season--the in- auguration of activities with an all-city tournament, a two-day affair on the Central High court. ln the first ganrie Christian Brothers High defeated the Bentonites, 20-18. The next night the Cardinals met and defeated Lafayette, 15-14. Central, in the finals, defeated Christian Brothers for the city title, 14-12. December 15-16. Trenton was the first out-of-town objective after the holidays. The Tren- ton team had an excellent passing combination, so defeated the visitors, 15-l 1. Captain Turbak played a consistent game. Ianuary 9. Central on Central's court put up a late but determined defense to Win 27-26, although the Redbirds led throughout the game. The boys played bril- liant ball and shot accurately. Otten took scoring honors, 14 points. Ianuary 15. North Kansas City basketeers came up so full of pep that they built an early lead which they held for the entire game. Captain Turloak was the only Cardinal to make more than one goal. Otten and Reno registered one each for a final score of ll-17. Ianuary 16. By taking advantage of the fouls contributed by the visiting Lafayette Shamrocks, the local boys piled up an impressive victory, 15-10. Snyder did some real shooting from the foul line, hitting five of six free ones. Thomsen's defensive play was outstanding. Ianuary 22. 5 When the Redbirds rnet North Kansas City on their home court, their determination to pick off a win was too much for the Hornets, so Benton came home with a score of 25-23. Often, Walpole, Olmsted, and Barton made cr fine showing. Ianuary 23. lPage Thirty hval BASKETBALL Failing to take advantage of the breaks and good set-ups, the Cardinals drew the small end of an 18-10 score in the Christian Brothers game on the Eagles' floor. Thomsen and Otten seemed the onlyplayers who could get going in the face of the Eagles' superior speed. Ianuary 29. Paxson, Snyder, Thomsen, Reno, and Ctten proved a brilliant combina- tion against the undefeated Maryville quintet, leading the scoring throughout the game. A field goal late in the last quarter accounted for the Spoof- hounds' victory, 21-19. The game was played in Maryville. Ianuary 30. A gala homecoming crowd enjoyed an unusual game when the varsity played the five from Kansas State School for the Deaf, Olathe, Kansas. Tur- bak and Otten were the mainstays piling up a final score of 25-1 l. An alumni team composed of former varsity stars took the measure of the Reserves, 31-6. February 5. By brilliant Work both offensively and defensively, the boys held the visit- ing Trenton Bulldogs so they could not connect with the goal and thus took a 13-10 victory. February 6. Though the Cardinals copped a 6-5 lead in the first quarter when they met the Centralites on the Benton floor, they were unable to hold the advan- tage and lost, 21-15. Snyder and Thomsen Were outstanding. Turbak Went out of the game with an injured knee. February 12. Three overtime periods, but a Win for a' that, 20-14, is the story of the Cardinal-Shamrock battle on the Northside court Thomsen, Snyder, and Otten did good ball-tossing, Turbak played brilliantly until he was injured in the fourth quarter. February 26. Perhaps it was the absence of cheering grandstands. Anyway, Benton- ites Went down to defeat, 19-18, at Olathe, Kansas, in the return game With the State School for the Deaf. Turner, returned after being out most of the season due to illness, played a fine game. Linnell, a sophomore, also con- tributed to the scoring. February 27. The building will be ready for occupancy next fall. It will house the manual training shops, now in the basement of the main building. These rooms will be remodeled for class rooms, increasing the present capacity of the main building by twelve class rooms a day. '53 .x , E3fil.,ggj.:j-w-.w'33A-..
