Page 42 Page 43 Football Season Reviewed Although disappointed in not winning the city eompetition, the 1934 football men are inclined to pronounce the season a successful one. After all, of a nine-game schedule, they won four games and tied two. Coach P. B. Springer had opened practice with only five lettermen, but sueeeeded in developing twenty during the season, and so well that six placed on the all- city teams. Dudley Mutziger and James liotz, eo-captains, piloted the team through the season. ln the first game, Septemher 29, the boys were a. little off form, eon- sequently the Christian Brothers' Eagles took the long end of a. hard fought battle, 6-0. Poloski, Toots, and NVillian were the mainstays in the Uardinal lineup. The following week, Oetoher 6, led by Jimmy Lotz, who played an out- standing game at half, the Cardinals roimped off with a l2-0 decision from Trenton. VVristen and liotz each made a touchdown, Lotz did most of the hall-lugging for the Fardinals. Toots, Williaii, and Zemhles stood out as the bright spots in the Cardinal front wall. On Oetoher 19, the Cardinals invaded Excelsior Springs where they battled to a 7-7 tie with the Tigers. The game was full of thrills. Late in the third quarter Nutziger took a pass from Poloski on his own 235 yard line and with the aid of some excellent hloeking, galloped 65 yards for a touch- down. Spring drop-kicked the extra point. Spring, hlutziger, Wristen. liotz, Poloski, and Zemhles were the high lights in the game for the llardinals. The new playing field, so long looked forward to, was ready for the Haskell game, Oetoher 27. That afternoon alumni and patrons turned out in full force to witness the dedication of the field hy this game with the highly-touted Indians. After waiting several hours for the Kansans to put in an appearance, the crowd learned that they had expected to play a night gameq so Benton rooters gathered that night. at the Clity Stadium to see the boys invade Indian territory time and again hut fail to find the necessary push to net a touchdown. Spring and Zemhles did good work in the line: Poloski and liotz starred in the haekfield. Final score: Benton Og llaskell 0. The following week on the night. of'Novemher 2, the Cardinals journeyed to Atehison. Although playing without the services of liotz and Poloski, the boys defeated the Bears on a spectacular run by Dilla., who suhhed for Lotz, in the closing minutes of the game. The final score was 6-0 in favor of the Redbirds. Andrews, Zemhles, Spring, and Mutziger looked good in the line for Benton: Dilla and VVristen stood out in the haekfield. Novemher 9 came along with another Cardinal victory, this time over the Maryville Spoofhounds hy the seore of 31-0. This game was played on our new field and a hig erowd of llentonites turned out to cheer for the Cardinals. After Coax-li Springer had played his first stringers one quarter in which they pushed over three tallies, the Reserves took np where the varsity left off and made two more eounters against the Spoofhonnds. Po- loski, W1'isten, Marek, and Lotz looked plenty good in the baekfield while Willian, Spring, Zembles, Whitlow, and Toots were very. very hot in the Cardinal front line. Un the following Saturday, November 17, Lafayette was the opponent in the second game of intra-city eompetition. Although the game was played during a rai11 storm and in a sea of mud, the Cardinals had enough power and speed left over from the preeeding week to push over four tallies and an extra point and hold the Shamroeks seoreless. The final score was Benton 25, Lafayette 0. The feature of the game was little Hliabbitf' VVristen's return of a punt. through the entire Lafayette squad seventy yards for a touchdown, amid the driving rain. VVristen, Marek, Nurski, and Poloski were the stars in the bac-kfieldg Williaii. Toots, Bedford. Spring, lllutziger, and Zembles stood out in the Bed Birds' front wall. Journeying to lndependenee to play without the serviees of VVhitlow, Spring, Toots, and Andrew, who were on the hospital list, the Cardinals bat- tled Williaiii Chrisman for three periods without a seore only to have the Tigers intercept a pass and mareh sixty yards for a touchdown. Zembles. Poloski. and VVristen were outstanding performers for the Cardinals. Final score was Benton ll, lndependenee fi. Came Thanksgiving Day, the deeiding game in the intra-eity competition. Playing in a sea of mud, the Cardinals 4-ouldn't get started and went down to defeat at the hands of the Central lndians 13-0. This game marked the finish for ten seniors: Poloski, Lotz, Dilla, Spring, Mutziger, Williaii, Burnett, Toots, Marek, Nurski. Zembles, Spring, Willian, Lotz, and Poloski furnished the sparks for the Red Birds. All these men and student athletic manager, Charles Landis, also a senior, were awarded letters at the elose of the season. Tony Poloski, hard driving baek, and Co-Uaptain Dudley Mutziger, flashy end, placed on the mythical all-eity first team, while Andrew Zembles, Bill Andrew, Robert Spring, and Co-Captain Jimmy Lotz plat-ed on the seeond all-star eleven. 1. On January 115, Ventral was again the Card opponent in intra-eity eom- petition, and the Redbirds were again defeated, 19 to 165. The Indians' pass- ing' and defensive plays eompletely sulvdued the Wards. Sullivan was the offensive star with Mastellar playing' a fine defensive role. Lifting his noble head and breast. he mounts boldly to the bare tops of the locust trees and seatters his joyous notes downward. Amid blaek clouds and drifting snows, the gorgeous eardinal, without a peer among his kind. seleets a eonspieuous pereh and ehallenges the attention ol' the world with his sharp cheep. Sometimes, I faney that he sings with a plaintive sort ol' joy as though he were saying t'heer-eheer-ebeer-''. Now hidden, then seen, but always with the same song of joyful sweet- ness he fills the hushed rustling stillness of the woods. Then over the damp 7 7 freshness of the morning earth he flees into the vague, far greenness of the enshrouding wood, into the dim distanee. Bright spirit of the winter gloom, You hold my courage high- Your song has turned the falling snow To flowers from the sky. I41lJITUIi'S NUTIC-Poets. essayists. and novelists have reeognized the superb beauty of the eardin:11's DlUIIlilg0 and song. What some eontempmary writers think of our schoo1's niaseot is revealed ill the above quotations. Page 50 ig!
