1939 THE BENTONIAN 1940 BOYS BASKETBALL The season opened on November 10 wlth the Tlgers uphold1nv tra- d1t1on by schedullng a game w1th the Alumnl The Tlgers showed thelr strlde but were subdued by the stars of yesterye r Oran met the Tlgers on the home court for the second game, glv lng the opponents the once over The Tlgers kept the ball 1n the1r pOSS6SS1OH to defeat them 2U-6 It was thelr flrst v1ctory'won by an ever increaslng lead The next game was played w1th Blodgett Probablv lt was the most thrllllng game of the season At the end of the fourth quarter the score was tled A three mlnute overtlme perlod found the score stlll tled Another two-mlnute overtlme perlod was ln SSSS1OD when the Tlgers snapped to thelr feet to make the goal r1ng true n1nn1ng EM-22 The Tlgers moved out of town for the next se1ge,w1th the Morley Bears The Bears growled and houled but the Tigers roared and fought to the f1nlSh defeat1ng them 19 15 Desplte the fact that the Tlgers were on an unfamlllar court, they set the wlnnlng pace e rly 1n the g me agalnst Oran It m rked the fourth vlctory 36 lf! The next game was played wlth St Mary's Coach McDowell saw hls Tlgers hammer the v s1tor to the end and unset them 23-19 Ped Dev1ls showed thelr f1ght agalnst the Tlgcrs and plaved an ex c1t1ng game The Tlgers got thelr strength back ln the fourth quarter and pulled through on top by a score of 18-17 wlth Chaffeeone point behlnd Durlng the Chrlstmas VaCat1OH the T1gers were 1nv1ted to the tournament at Leadwood Our team won over Lestervllle then playing 1n the flnals agalnst Jackson We lost ln the last mlnutes of play by a score of 23-21 thus renderlng to Jackson 3rd place Functlonlng beaut1ful1y, ll ten of the Benton numeral men step ped 1n to thelr strlde to br1ng home an Indlan scalp from Jackson w1th a margln of 30 25 In the Scott M1ss1ss1pp1 tournament,the Tlgers met the Charles- ton Blue Jays for the thlrd tlme du 1ng the eason Battl1ng off the Blue Jays the Tlgers left the opponents m rooned wlth a score of 25-23 FbllOW1Hg the defeat of the Charleston Blue Jays, the Tlgers fought w1th the Bearcats Though lt was rough golng the Tlgers subdued them, wlnnlng by a score of 31 29 Playlng the flnals against the county's outstandlng team for flrst place, the Tlgers held thelr own agalnst astoundlng odds Never for second d1d the team weaken An early lead was taken by the S1keston Bulldogs,but lt was readily overcome by the p0UnC1Hg T1g6TS In the last three m1nutes of play the Tigers fell prey to the dogs loslng by one po1nt w1th a score of 26-25 At the reg1ona1 meet held at Jackson, the Tlgers won oter Mar quand by a score of 31 lil but were trlpped by the Prep in the next game 19-16 The Tlgers were keen compet1t1on 1H both games that they played 1 1 - l I. .
