1939 THE BENTON IAN 1940 MUCI DEPAP NT T Slf La H repos and relax 1t's Benton's l9UO mus1c department, pldvln II 11g those famlllar melodles It h s been through a large proportlon of our students learnlng to pprecl te muslc that our four dep rtments have gre tly 1ncre sed ln slze Thls f vorable school year held 1n store for us a new d1rector, one most assuredly capable of teachlng muslc He 1 Mr Paul BushonL who came to us from the Southeast MiSSOUT1 Teachers College e most talented muslc student He was a member of the A Cappella Cho1r, hls past credentlals h ve glven our school Through Mr Bushong dreams of Benton c1t1zens and prevlous band members are reallzed Dur1ng thls school year the band h s been 91V en unzforms whlch conslst of red caps and c pes wh1te sk1rts an trousers The unlforms were made posslble by parents and patrons of the school The band played at all home basketball games, at the plays glven ln the communltv bulldlng and we are entered 1n the contest at Cape Glrardeau to be held 1n Aprll The numbers to be played re Azalea' by Fulton and UAmer1can Youthu by Pettee To the lnstruments already possessed the hlgh school has added new cvmbals and a street drum The growlng prospects of the organl zatlon are credulous A bras quartet has been 'o m d by some of the most capable mem- bers of tr b nd Loulse Wllllams, a senlor, manages the cornet wltn great ab1l1ty Dlck Engllsh, a sophomore, trombonlst eases h1s sllde successfully Elwanda Cooper also a sophomore, plays the bass horn splend1dly Charles Wade, another sophomore, 13 the trumpet melody carr1er He 1S also a member of the Benton Swlng Band The quartet has played at several entertainments Another of our arrangements 15 a sax foursome, made up f M Bushong, the d1rector and most noted sax player of th1s sect1on the country B111 Mlller, a sophomore whose technlque 15 grand Betty W tklns, a Junior, who successfully manages a sax, too Julia Grace Steck, who has not played long, 15 outstandlng A club made up of members of the band class has been formed Its maln object1ve 1S to promote lnterest 1n MUSIC.
