1939 THE BENTONIAN 1940 A IFIP Immed ately after leav1ng hlgh school, I, M r1e Bollinger accepted a pos1t1on as clerk ln Famous Barr and Co After worklng a long tlme, I was glven an eight months' vac t1on My f1rst thought was to return to Benton where I had gone to school In Benton, I walked 1nto a b1g f1ne cafe When the waltress came to me I recognlzed her as Marle Pattenglll wno told me th t she was marrled and happy She sald Leon LeGrand owned the cafe At my suggest1on, went to see Albert Koch who was l1v1ng at Commerce Then I went to the theater and who do you thlnk was the man ger Monroe Bolllnger Monroe told me Warren Bertrand was l1v1ng on large farm south of Benton I took a bus to Cape Glrardeau Whlle on the bus I saw Cl1fford Klrby and B1l1y Mutchler who were sk1pp1ng the courtry when I reached Cape I saw a s1gn HJerry's Beauty Shoppe' th1s was none other than Geraldlne Mlller Whlle gettlng a man1cure she told that M r1e Zlegler was a nurse ln the St FTahC1S Hbspltal On our w to lunch, we stopped 1n to see J1m Sanders who was runnlng fo cons ble and was too busy to t lk wzth us At m1dn1ght I took a trawn o Denrer wne I V1SltbO A ry Ia e who was helplng her husband Worx 1n the post offlce Ne stoppe at n that Elva also worked 1n the club The next stop that we made was at a bakery shop where Cur+1s orumnecker the owner had Arthur SChlW1tZ hlred for the baker After slort t lk I took a t3X1 and to my SUFPTISG the dr1ver was Orvllle McDowe l Wh1le r1d1ng alone I glanced out the w1n dow and saw Verbon McPherson walklng down the walk w1th f1V8 chlldren at hls heels topped n AI1ZOH8 for a few nours and found Neal Edwards work1ng on the W P A Neal was rest1ng too well to talk Later told me tn Walter was he was marr1ed to Next I went to Hollywood and saw Helen Bee Moore who was then the leadlng lady ln the latest movle productlon Betty Watklns also was the movie center She was ga1n1ng much nub11c1ty as a axophone player I then v1sited a large ranch on wh1ch James Hensley was a r1d1ng cowboy Golng to the coast and to a smaller port I was lnformed that 1n May of last ye r Margery Doty had marr1ed a sallor and that Poy Thompson now owns a large sh1p Wh1le attendlng an auto race I w1tnessed Harold B1lderback drlve on to victory 1n h1s 11ttle yellow racer Nhlle pushlng through the crowd at the race I met Dorrls Dally who sa1d th t she and Herman were l1v1ng on a farm and were ra1s1ng Ch1CkEnS She sa1d Dorothy Sander had made good school teacher for the state of Iowa Mlldred Stuckey was employed by a large bus1ness flrm 1n San FTaDC1SCO, and J1mm1e Johnson was an old bachelor Just roaming around the country My last stop was at Seattle where I saw Stewart Stuckey who Was 1n the navy He sald Jerome Scherer had become captaln of C C C Camp By thls tlme I had to return to St Louls and when I got home I was well satlsfied w1th my trlp and started worklng harder than ever I went t Lucv g1v1ng to Cal1forn1a where V1rg1n1a Bertrand was 11v1ng She lelson was worklng 1n a hat shop ln Hollywood Arvllle Swlmmlng lessons to a number of m0V18 stars and that Shlrley Temple I I ,-, I ' ' ,a ' , . . . 1 . , . - . a . . . . , . . . .
