The Editor Speaks: I have debated long on this question: When an editor speaks, what should an editor say? The only conclusion this editor arrived at was an humble thank-you. This thank-you extends to the many advertisers and patrons for mak- ing our yearbook financially possible, to my fellow staff members who never failed me or their class in meeting specific deadlines, and especi- ally to Mrs. Betty J. Wagner, our advisor, whose gentle prodding and kind assistance made this 1955 Benecho a reality. We have enioyed making this yearbook, we hope you will enioy reading it. Yet, it was only four years ago that we haunted this school in burlap bags, curled hair, inside-out ieans, and lipstick-smeared faces. Who could forget an initiation like ours? Our knees shook at the thought of being initiated, but later our sides ached from laughing at the fun of it. That same night we were treated to our first high school dance at which the maiority of us shone as wallflowers, but things like that have a peculiar way of working out and by spring and the Return Party we were all self-taught Arthur Murrays. The next fall we returned to the fold as sophomores, and the girls found them- selves among strangers. The small boys who had been our constant companions did not return, in their stead came tall strangers with a faint starting of shoulders. This same year we gave a nice bunch of kids a bang-up initiation. The monotony of that long winter was broken by the start of scholastic wrestling for Benton Joint High. A few of our most daring classmates tried their hand at grappling. CThey did well, too!D Spring finally came and the freshmen gave us a gala return party! That same spring our boys began to fill the shoes of graduated greats on the varsity baseball squad. Before it seemed possible, we found ourselves iuniors. We tried to feel and act important, but the seniors we had classes with made this highly impossible. We managed to come into our own a little with a successful iunior drama entitled, The Life of Riley. The fun we had learning and presenting this farce will long be remembered. Like eager beavers we found ways to make money for the Junior-Senior Prom, the big event in a iunior's life. Our biggest business venture was selling Easter candy. Finally prom time arrived, and we worked diligently decorating the Hotel Moses Van Campen in our Mardi Gras theme. For many of us it was the first formal we attended and how father's bank account waned to deck us out for this occasion! The summer sped by and school days were upon us again. Our senior year! Every day seemed shorter than the day preceding and the many events of a senior year met us head on. First came the senior play, Seven Cinderellas in which many of us had a part in either Thursday or Friday night's cast. Next, we were feted by the iuniors at a prom and soon after that we gave up our books to concentrate on our closing activities. Class night with its many laughs came first and in rapid succession tonight was upon us. Yes, tonight as we fill the stage for our last performance, we realize that the past four years is not a forgotten dream, but a prized collection of wonderful cherished memories. 4 M . 3? ,. 5 Q52 f hgh. CE IPS SIGNING CHE Cys iv' omg LOTS OF HARD W Rx TO THE CLASS OF 1955: Another school year is drawing to a close and the Benecho now presents you with a record of your associations at Benton Joint High School. It is said that a man is never entirely happy when he is away from the scenes and memories of his boyhood. It is my hope that you will cherish and continue the friendships you have formed during your school years. To all ot you I extend my sincere congratulations, and wish you Godspeed and good fortune through life. fifimvfc MARY A. HARTMAN English, B.S., M.S. CALKINS Band Director ' Scdoolgaad After a hard working summer, the band started practicing new marches for the Halloween Parade. Their pains were rewarded by the prizes they won at Catawissa, Bloomsburg, Millyille, and Benton. In May, conducted by Mr. Calkins, the band rocked the walls of the auditorium with the strains of Bartesville Boogie and many other songs. The loss of thirteen band senior members will leave a gap hard to fill. 'r alt . . ' K V w t , sf 5 - ,.
