B ette E. Hess Treasurer . . . . Darcy Whitenight The class officers were given the responsibility of carrying the Seniors through the many Senior year activities, such as the year book and com- rnencement. The thoroughly interested and capable officers, with the helpful guidance of Mr. Miller, our home room teacher, and the cooperation of the class of '39, have successfully and efficiently led the class over the obstacles which arose and have brought the Senior year to a satisfactory close. Page 17 Page 18 H5 CLASS HISTORY Although we all have a heartfelt affection for school that has been the scene of so many happy memories, we are never entirely regretful when the time to leave draws near. lt is however in these last fleeting days that our minds race back to the time-it seems only yesterday-that we first climbed the stairs of our dear old Benton High. As Freshmen, we had to accustom ourselves to different hours, strange people and new systems. We put on a bold front but down deep in our hearts we were so fearful, that we jumped when the bells rang and wondered where to go next, because rooms were so hard to find. We had nearly completed our freshman year before we were thoroughly adjusted to the new surroundings and atmosphere. As Sophomores, how proud we felt when we could participate with the upper classmen, in the senior assembly each week. We ventured into some of the activities of the school, a little timidly to be sure, but with increasing courage. We now studied ancient history. Although we thought Rameses ll and Alexander the Great were courageous, we secretly felt that these men should have remained dead instead of rising to plague us with their deeds. Oh, well '- - Iuniors! my what a name and we surely were proud of it. We felt we were more mature and with unlimited confidence we invaded every musical activity, dramatic production and athletic team. We admired Gareth, de- spised Launcelot, adored Lynette, and sighed with Elaine. Our study in Physics led us to pride ourselves in our-ahem-intellectual advancements. As Seniors we have reached the most admired stage of our whole life. Chemistry, which we found to be quite messy, has never lost its novelty. Problems of American Democracy seemed very insignificant to us seniors. We had greater problems to worry about. Who would be chosen class Presi- dent? Who would be in the class play? Would our pictures turn out well? These and many other weighty questions kept us awake nights. We have spent four years of our lives at Benton High-four years of study, of joys and cares, of work and play. We hope that the graduates of '39 will have a pleasant future. Our first problem was electing class officers. With the help of Alvin Sutliff, our adviser, We elected the following: President . Harold Shultz Vice-President ,. . lean Breece Secretary , Betty Crossley Treasurer . Kenneth Kindig The monthly newspaper, Ulolly lunior Iournalf' was our next problem, which We carried on with few mishaps. We debated little concerning the choice of class rings, for We found we Were a very co-operative group. The ring selected is very plain with the traditional school seal adorning it. Athletic activities in which several of our members took part were soccer, baseball and basketball. Many of us participated in dramatic activities such as the lunior play, Life Begins at Sixteen, the minstrel, and assembly programs. Music Won many of our members through the orchestra, the band, the glee club, and a trio. National Music Week gave these persons an opportunity to do their part. After all this, the year was ended with a flourish, the lunior-Senior Ban- quet. l- If First row: li':1rl lim-llf-r, Ituln-1't Sewaiwl, flalrltmi Hess. Lvu Iil1'Hug'I1. YVnrrvn Johnson. An entirely new idea was introduced with Mexican music, dances, and costumes. The scene for the rninstrel was laid in the courtyard ot a Mexican Inn. The minstrel circle was followed by gay Mexican dances contrasted with a modern dance ot our own country, The plot concerned a nearly bankrupt Innkeeper who was saved from ruin by an American night club singer, who took the entire group back to New York to star in her new show. BAND The first band in the history of Benton High School was organized last tall under the leadership of Mr. Knowlton. At first the organization was com- posed of forty-five beginners ranging from the fifth grade through high school. By February the band was divided into two groups, the first including those with a wider range of musical experience. By diligent practicing they were able to make their first public appearance the first week of May. The organization plans to secure additional instruments for next year so they can appear at athletic contests as well as other school and community functions. The following officers were elected by the band: Iohn Mather . . President Dorothy Beishline . . , Secretary, Treasurer Kermit Sutliff . , Librarian ATHLETICS ... After Benton High School had defeated the five opposing teams of the North- ern Division of the County League: our hopes of the championship were de- stroyed when Nescopeck, the team in second place in the Southern Division, defeated us l-U. The season opened with a relatively large squad of boys interested in soccer. Coach Davis' thorough training schedule brought the team into top form early in the season. Although the offensive attack of the Black and Or- ange Was not exceptionally brilliant, the Will to win was greatly responsible for our successful season.
